I hadn't ever wondered, Chris, but now I know, and I really, really enjoyed watching it go up the gradient and especially around the lower loop as it showed off your gorgeous layout to the full. Nice to see more updates from one of my favourite layouts on the You Tubes! :)
Hi Chris, I was not surprised the A4 made the Helix as I did a challenge with my Call to pull as many trucks as possible and it pull thirty odd up and around my hill. They are basically the same loco underneath. Traction tyres being the key. Although I do wonder how the motor will far over time. The Farish Castle is nowhere near as good, a light load is always required. Scenics are coming along nicely to. You are going to have much fun filling the school yard with children lol. Take care, Mark
Hi Chris - great to see some helix action ! Very impressive. Bridge looks safe now the safety mesh has been installed. The "worn" path at the school is really well done 👏. Cheers Euan
@@ngaugefouroaksstreetstatio6932 all built - although I had issues with the kit. This first helix has been built anti clockwise as that is the only way I can connect it into the layout. Seemed to upset some on Facebook as it means the trains go up the inside track. What they don't know is there are a set of crossovers top and bottom to allow a train to switch over to the outside track and then switch back at the top so it arrives on the right track on the scenic section. Light engines or DmU's will still use the inside track. Working on the track to join the two new circuits into existing layout.
@@thegrowler-blackwoodngauge Well it all comes down to what loco is pulling what, generally better going down the inside rather than going up but who cares? Look forward to the next video.
2% is 1 in 50 and there are few if any real life main lines in the UK with gradients as steep. The Lickey at 1 in 38 is steeper, but the train would have had a banker. The Great Western between Exeter and Plymouth compares. A4s were never used on this line but Castles certainly were and I would expect the Graham Farish model to be able to haul close to a prototypical train load up a model Dainton or Rattery. Great model and an interesting test of the Dapol model.
That was impressive Chris, I was very disappointed with my Graham Farish Castle Class with the amount it would haul even with DCC Concepts Power Base. I understand though that Dapol steam have traction tyres which really helps, so next steam engine for me will be a Dapol I think. Nice work with the bridge and around the school too, look forward to more mate, cheers Chris, John
The traction tyres without doubt make the difference, a few months back the A4 was derailing and i noticed the traction tyres had become really stretched so I reluctantly had to pull the loco apart but somehow managed to change them. I now realise over oiling had allowed the tyres to become impregnated with oil which caused the issue. Even so I was still unsure if it would handle 9 coaches. Cheers
The Dapol A4 is a powerful little thing. It didn't seem to slow at all going up the helix. I like the worn paths by the school Chris. Pupil power at its best. Stephen
Hi Stephen, did not slow at all, I ran the loco for about half an hour with one coach and it got smoother each leg. Then I connected the coaches on the lower level and ran it up the helix. I then had to reverse it down and was somewhat hesitant to see if it could push all 9 coaches back up? It did without skidding at all and with no modifications at all. I thought it may make an interesting video. Will need a gate by the short cut to keep out unwanted past pupils !Cheers
Hi Chris, Nice to see the the Dapol A4 has some grunt! just curious as to what make the coaches are as the Dapol coaches are a lot heavier than the Farish ones! Great work on the scenery, love the path to the school as a shortcut, just perfect! All the best Tony.
Hi Chris that's impressive, it made it up the helix no problem. I was wondering, what's the length of the room of the side where the viaduct is? it looks quite a distance. John
Hi John that's just over 21 feet so when completed a full run should be about 6 minutes or more at a scale speed. Always wanted full length trains running through country side.

Thanks Michael, cant wait to complete the loop eventually.
Wow those viaducts are excellent!
Thank you, very much appreciated.
Hi Chris a great demonstration with the A4 you do have to take some if not all the credit for you work on the track and helix bravo. Colin
Thanks Col, much appreciated.
Super !
Greetings Gert
Good video sir

Absolutely Mark, it is the traction tyres for sure. It might just have to be a weekend or school holidays!!

Thanks Euan, how is your helix progressing?

Lovely looking loco and looks great on your layout. 👍
Andrew🙂
Thanks Andrew
A very impressive layout!
Thanks Keith
Good to see a Dapol Express loco do the business. Sadly the small tank engines are a different story.

My Farish Castle looks and runs lovely, but I agree it struggles to pull much!

to be honest i was hoping a banking engine was going to be attached or for a double-header... anyway good that the motor is powerful enough...

1st time, I've seen a helix with 4 tracks. What is the radius between inside and outside, please?
Great layout and following the build. 👍
Sorry for the late reply Mike outside track would be about 20 inch radius. Thank you for the feedback.

Not really into steam, but that was impressive . 👍
Must admit Ron I also like my diesels. Cheers
What is the model number of this model?
train number is 22, it's the Mallard by Dapol.
