Hello Tom, I want to thank you for doing this video, I’ve looked everywhere for a very simple video like this to learn how to program decoders. Question, how do you program 3 digit address? And how can did you have this set up. Very easy video to follow along. Saved it to my Facebook for future tries.
Hi Tom...........I need an opinion as to which DCC Starter System to purchase....Digitrax or NCE? I'll only have up to about 4 trains running at any given time, I do want the sound feature as well....im thinking 5amps would be sufficient?
Hi Sal. Both systems are good from what you described. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. What I would suggest is to read what features each one has and decide upon what You will eventually do with your system. What's good for me may not be good for you.
Thanks for running through the programming basics. I have a Digitrax Evo system and I find the Digitrax manuals confusing and explaining too much about WHAT they can do but NOT HOW to get there. I wish I had purchased another companies system. Their support is as bad as their manuals.
Right from the instruction manual: 25.1 adding loconet throttles to your DCS50 Any LocoNet throttle can be used with your DCS50. Simply plug the LocoNet throttle into either LocoNet port on the back of your DCS50 or into any LocoNet or Throttle Jack anywhere on your LocoNet system. If you want to be able to plug in a throttle at a remote location, we recommend using a UP5 Universal panel.
Tom, I liked your video, however what would helpful is if you would ensure you show which buttons you are pushing and name the button. In a couple of your steps, it was hard to understand how you got to the next step...keep up the good work.
Hi Tom; can you help me with a problem. I have a BLI engine, i try to program it and now all i get is sound. It wont move. I get all the sound functions, but nothing moves. Can you help. By the way, your videos are very helpful. Thanks. Clarence E. Davis
Hi Clarence, In the early Paragon edition, BLI locos had a sound decoder installed and it was up to the buyer to install their own DCC decoder. This may be your problem. There may be two decoders in the loco. It's been a long time but the two decoders have to be programmed separately. One in Page Mode and the other in Ops mode. Not sure which one is which, I would have to go back and search for the documentation I found in a forum somewhere. This happened to me several years ago when I bought a used one at a train show. Luckily the decoder info was in the box, but I still had to reprogram the DCC decoder. Some modelers just remove one of the decoders and program them separately.
Hi Tom, now that I installed JMRI , and my PR4 , starting to do some programming on a programming track, I find that some loco’s don’t work correctly after I try my throttle sounds, like bell or horn, I loose my sound. Some guys are saying that the PR4 are designed for Digitrax decoders only, so if I reset my defaults on loco and don’t try my throttle, just put loco back my main tracks then sounds are fine. your thoughts please?? Thanks!
Tom, I have recently purchased two Brockman locomotives at F7A Diesel and a 4-6-2 USPA light Pacific, and I'm using the Digitrax DT400R control. I have screwed both locomotives up and would love to get them back to their factory specs but have no idea how to go about this, I'm sure there's a CV number that I could use but I don't know what it is. Maybe in one of your shows you could show us how to find the proper CV number to ues.
Typically setting CV08 to 008 will reset everything to the factory defaults. Setting it to 009 will reset everything except the speed table, if your satisfied with the speed.
I've gotten as far as putting in the 4 numbers for the new address, but when I press Enter, it flashes "3wr•" and then "No-d". I have no idea what either of those mean, so I'm not sure what to fix... Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
Chris, that was a temporary track I used for the demonstration in this video. I am in the process of redoing the area where I had my programming track. In some other videos, I programmed on the main but had no other devices on the tracks at the time.
Only when your finished with all your CV's. I did the CV's one at a time and demonstrated what they changed. I programmed the loco on the main line instead of a program track on this video since I didn't have any other locos on the main line. There are different settings where you can program a loco on the main line while others are also on the main line, but I just used it as a program track for simplicity.
Thanks for your insight Jason. Most modelers what to know all the details about the equipment they are using. You can always 2X the video while watching, it will get you through faster if your that impatient.
Tom, we all appreciate your helpful tips, but I had the same reaction as Jason Treadway while watching one of your videos. It's not that we're impatient, but you tend to repeat yourself in setting up the topic of the video. It took you 3 minutes to get to the point. As for 2x, how do we know when you address the topic? Thanks, Tom. You are a wealth of knowledge.

Hi Tom I changed the loco address on my class 47. The loco did the little shuffle but now it does not respond and no sound. What should I do?
If it doesn't respond to the address you entered, try 03, if that doesn't work thy reprograming to factory default

Good job bud
Thanks for the great info
Glad I could help Leif.

Customer support is bad with most companies.
Tom.Can I Use a Digitrax up5 and hook it up to a DCS50 To run a Digitrax DT-400.

Dear Mr. Tom So far so Good all are cristal clear, understand very well. Maybe I have some questions in feature videos when I refer.
Yes, absolutely ask away.
This is a very helpful video as I am considering purchasing one of these.
Glad I could help. Like your channel name!

Did my video on the Blueline help at all?
Hello Tom, I was wondering your thoughts on the best software? JMRI or ESU , Please advise! Thanks Mike
JMRI can control your entire model railroad and program your decoders. ESU is used to program decoders.
@@TomsTrainsandThings Thank you very much! Love the videos.

Tyler, send me a little more detail to my email. I'll be able to help you there.
Toms Trains and Things Thanks for the offer to help! I figured it out though. Just a simple step I was skipping on accident...
Hi Tom. Is that the programming track you have in the video?

Cheers mate. I'm having problems programming my locos. Trying to setup a programming track but not quite figured it out yet.
Hi Chris, send me an email with the details of how your trying to set up your program track. tomstrainsandthings@gmail.com
Would you be the Tom's trains in Fresno?
Nope, wrong end of the country.
Great Tom , but the screen and pad are out of focus. I'm just a beginer , and this is important to me. Thanks for sharing.
also the keypad wasnt in focus
Can't have everything in focus.
Quit complaining and provide something useful to the community!
So Tom, on Digitrax.... EVERY time you set a CV in programming, you have to turn the power back on with the throttle??
Only when your finished with all your CV's. I did the CV's one at a time and demonstrated what they changed. sorry I could not see the little bity screen to follow you
Get a bigger screen like a computer screen or TV
Omg dude just get to the point!! Programming the locomotive

Your camera focus, in the throttle screen, is very bad. just needed to tell you.
Thank you Tito
