Thanks for your input. When doing my research, I saw that they discontinued that power supply for the older version. Glad they did, that thing is Huge.!
Yes, I was more referring to the fact that you need a PS314 Power supply to provide power to run your current DCS51 which is a 3.6 Amp unit 13.8 Volt DC power supply versus the older discontinued DCS50 you shared with us which needed a PS315 15 Volt AC 2.5 Amps or better to run. No compatibility between power supplies and they are not sold separately. Plus the PS315 was discontinued in 2011 which makes it harder to come by too.
I want to thank you for this video Tom. It took me a whole two minutes to figure out what my buddy wasn't able to figure out my reading the manual. Thank you
Great tutorial Tom. 1. I like the DC feature. 2. I can only run ONE train at a time? :( 3. I like your alter ego. 4. I'll watch this again when I get around to hooking my Zephyr up. 5. I like the word 'throttle' -Mark
Thanks Mark. With your two MRC Power Packs hooked up you can run 3 locomotives. Digitrax also has a UT4 or Dt402 throttle you can use, just plug it in one of the loconet receptacles on the back. Throttle, throttle, throttle, throttle, throttle, throttle, throttle, throttle, throttle, throttle.
Since I've only used Digitrax products, I can't give you any input on other products. All DCC systems do the same thing, they just look different and may have some different bells and whistles.
Thank you Tom for your quick response, I was looking at the Zephyr extra. I like that it is a base controller and all of the features it has. I don't need a hand held. I only have DCC train so I don't half to worry about DC current.
Are you running power from the wall when you have your DC controller connected to your digitrax controller? I'm just wondering cuz I noticed you did turn on the DC power pack. And I'd rather not fry my control center. Thank you Tom
Hi Mr. Tom I am a beginner & still learning. I need to clear one thing. If I need to run more than 1 locomotive do we need to use throttles for each locomotive? or from one throttle how many locomotives can be operated simultaneously.
In Dc, the. voltage controls whatever is on the track. If you want to control 2 locomotives, you would need to seperate your layout into blocks so you can have a throttle for each block, or have a switch on the throttle to select which block it controls. You can see more in my series "Model Railroading For Beginners." ruclips.net/p/PLjjhnrIKSTShrzvkLrtppcNJ0zObTcDyv
@@TomsTrainsandThings Hi tom Thanks for your Quick reply. Actually, I was asking in DCC System how many locomotives can be operated simultaneously from one throttle? ( I have gone thru your all Videos for the railroad for Beginners series). do you have any other series for the DCC wiring system?
Sorry about that. I didn't pay attention to which video you commented on. You can run as many locomotives as your command station allows and within the max amperage. as long as each one has it's own identifying number. The amperage varries depending on the decoder in the locomotive. DCC Playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLjjhnrIKSTSgWNyYqv9g68zdK3Bp8Lav7
Toms Trains and Things Does the white part that has the red wires connected a separate thing or included with the Zephy? Cause I've read online that you can connect it using the wires without the plug that goes into the Bachmann controller
I am setting up a layout and I wanted to make sure that I could use a DCC system other than Bachmann on E-Z since I have the Bachmann DCC commander set being shipped to my house so I plan on upgrading from Bachmann a to Digitrax DCC system
Even with a JMRI you cannot read back CVs with the Super Empire Builder. The DB150 is not able to. I used to have this and even with a LocoBuffer I still couldn't read back. It will allow JMRI programing. I ended up getting myself a Super Chief set (DCS100 command station) which allowed the readback and then used the DB150 as a booster.
Since I have a DB150 I have to use JMRI to read back the CV settings. I do it all the time. On each page on Decoder Pro you have several buttons on the bottom so you can write to your decoder and even read back the changes you make. I have a video on hooking up the PR3 where it shows the values I programmed after hitting the read values on sheet. ruclips.net/video/CiDYcgXCQJM/видео.html If it wasn't for JMRI, I wouldn't be able to know what all my settings were on my locomotives.
I wonder if this was due to a software change in the DB150. Mine was purchased in 2003 and I never flashed it's memory. It would not read back CVs. JMRI would give me and error that said readback is not supported on this command station. I did flash the DCS100 I had a couple different times, which added new features and gave me different program options.
Probably worth noting that the external power supply for the older DCS50 which you show needs a different power supply than the newer DCS51

Glad I could help!
The best educational clip on Digitrax wiring :)
Thank you.
I am glad I came across your site. U have been a great help as I am just starting out.
Thank you for the kind words. Glad I could help!
The digitrax Zephyr is easy and not E-Z!! Yay!!
A outstanding video on dcc and dc throttle control with the Zephyr very verygood, when looking for a dcc system.
Thank you very much Ramon.

Tom I am looking at DCC controllers, I like the Zephyr but I was looking at the MRC Prodigy Advance2 also. What is your opinion on these controllers.

The Zephyr Extra is a good unit to start out with, and if you ever decide to expand, you can add hand held's and even a booster for more power.
Hi Tom, could you do another video on a DCS- 51 . Thank you
There isn't anything I can add to the DSC51. Most of the features are also the same on the other Digitrax videos that I did.
Are you running power from the wall when you have your DC controller connected to your digitrax controller? I'm just wondering cuz I noticed you did turn on the DC power pack. And I'd rather not fry my control center. Thank you Tom
You still need to power your Digitrax controller with the wall wart. The power pack is for an additional throttle.
That's my question, Tom do i need to power the additional throttle not the digitrax throttle. Thank you sorry for the mix-up
@@russellloomis4376 Go back and watch at 18:24 for the instruction. Turn the power on!

Where do you buy the cable to connect the Zephyr to the EZ track?
Jaxanator25 where you buy the track, hobby shop, on line, through Bachman.

You should have no problem converting to the Zephyr when your ready to do so.

That could be it. I bought mine in 2011 but am unable to read back with the throttle, so I needed JMRI for that!
Great video. I could sure use that old dcs050. Mine has a bad segment on it. I could use it for parts. Want to sell it.
There are some bad spots on my circuit board and the throttle was damaged when I bought it. Still interested?
Tom the previous owner hooked up the dc power pack wrong and that's what burned the board.
Thanks Samuel. Is that a common problem?
Yes. I have a Zephyr. a DCS 100 and a DCS 240 and you have to read the book carefully before you even try to hook them up.
Thanks for your input Samuel, much appreciated.
Not sure why you are demonstrating broken electronics?
