  • Some of the greatest pedal innovations were inspired by people using their gear in ways is wasn't meant to be used. So today we’re going to use guitar pedals in ways they weren’t meant to be used. Nick is taking over the show and is going to share his favorite pedals to re-amp drums through. Let us know in the comments which “drum riff” was your favorite and don’t forget to check out Nick’s RUclips channel Nix Tapes.

The coolest effect I ever heard on drums was used by the drummer of jazz great Rahsaan Roland Kirk; a Colombian guy whose name escapes me. Normally, there are two little vents on the side of the snare that, when you hit the skin, allow all the air compressed by a skin-strike to escape. This drummer had inserted vinyl tubes into those holes that sealed them, and routed them to a mouthpiece such that the only way for air to escape was through the mouthpiece. HOWEVER, the mouthpiece also allowed him to blow back *into* the snare and increase the air pressure inside it. This allowed him to "tune" the snare's pitch as he played. The guy had cheeks like Dizzy Gillespie. I think it's the only time I've ever been able to say about a drummer "Man, that cat can BLOW!".

Worth mentioning- if this is something you want do without spending $260 on such a nice reamp box Radial also makes a simple version (PRO-RMP) for $100 that lets you accomplish the same thing with just a few fewer features and no blend control. It can accomplish simple reamping in addition to running pre-recorded tracks through a pedalboard like an outboard rack!

Well, when my drummer asks for pedals, I say screw that and just hook his drums in through my Lexicon PCM81 Rack effects. Drums through harmonized octave settings can produce some crazy sounds. Although, what might really be cool sounding is to run the snare through a Digitech Whammy and then into a Crybaby Wa, and use your feet to have loads of fun.
Albums I like the drums on would be anything by the Japanese group Baby Metal. I don’t know how people play drums like that without having a heart attack in the process. You would really have to have some stamina to play like that, but still sounds awesome to me. Of course, I also like the drums on Rushes Moving Pictures.

Another great example of a great video! It’s so cool of you guys to not only honor other pedal makers but to showcase them and explain the roots or in this example out of the box thinking and real world example of how to utilize these gadgets. It’s one thing to say you could use theses pedal on something like drums but it really expands the mind when you inspire us with Jam-xamples (that’s Jam Examples )
So JamOn ( Jam On )...

I looooove the drum production on Bloc Party's Silent Alarm, especially some of the more haunting dirty sounds like on She's Hearing Voices, goosebumps giver that one is!

The Radial EXTC is a must-have. I bought one last year. I plan on trying my Danelectro backtalk on tom's as well as my JHS Spring tank on some drums! =] Sweet vid guys! as always. PRO TIP: Don't leave the EXTC on to of you hot/un-leveled monitor speakers or it will heat up the adhesive and cause the rubber pad on the bottom to slide.

Very educational! I love the gated drums on the "The Power Station" album. I was shocked at the drums and could not understand how they did it. Awesome!
