- What's the perfect recipe for a shredder board? Like any well-loved dish, there's more than one way to put together something amazing, but when we decided to film an episode dedicated to shredding, we knew we had to call our friend, Paul Gilbert. Anyone who knows Paul knows he's a master shredder or, as he prefers, a precision speed guitar athlete. In this episode, not only will you learn what effects Paul thinks are essential for guitar athleticism, but he will show you how to quite literally build a pedal board.
As a little chef's kiss, we're giving away the board Paul builds. Enter to win Paul Gilbert's Perfect Recipe Board for Precision Speed Guitar Athleticism here: forms.gle/SYZ8...
Paul teaches one-on-one guitar classes with personalized feedback, and you can take that class here: artistworks.co...

Where does the mayo go in a sandwich?? settle the debate.

Mayo is the last part of a sandwich
Edit: why doesn’t Subway put sauces on first then if last isn’t the correct way?
Hate mayo
I’m with Mr. Gilbert. I’m not into Mayonnaise. It’s best left in the jar, on the shelf and not missed.
the spread goes on LAST! always. Austin is 100% correct... Commies put it on first, nuff sed
On the bread!
“What Paul is showing us is that we should probably learn to actually play guitar instead twiddling knobs.” I feel personally attacked.
…..Some of us are personally responsible for that comment.
Why not both though?
He even has a trick to prevent the knobs being twiddled.
Skill issue
@@ThiagoRochaA1 I absolutely could practice more
Stopped by for the pedals, stayed for Mr. Gilbert. Thanks Paul!
Paul is one of my favorite people. His love for music is infectious.
And a snake just bit my toe. I can’t hear that melody without thinking about those lyrics ever again!
Aka the knowledge
Paul is great! Feels like your uncle is a rock star and gives you advice
Parasocial relationships are weird.
Paul is the best form of human being. Cheerful, enthusiastic, crafty and the best at what he does.
I love that Paul Gilbert is a guitar fan as much as anybody else. He is a legitimate great but he nerds out over players and their sound just like the rest of us.
Thats a fun board. Now Im goong to twiddle the knobs on mine to figure out where I am going wrong 😂
"my friend Paul Gilbert" must be awesome to say
Inoeraonaly know local.uusicians as good if not as better..
He just got lucky like many others..
And yes he's awesome.
But he sucks because he's using transistors into a tube amp..
It isn't the amp it's him. Amd the transistors..
But I enjoy watching my tube amp values climb as I use nothing but an amped pedal board.
Nope no modelers..the amped 3 does it all and more..
Paul is so kind to draw the attention to mashed potato and gravy and away from Austin's sociopathic idea it is okay to put mayo on cheese when finishing a sandwich. What a guy.
Paul dropping the "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" line with flerb!
Josh “This has the most useless sound ever put into a pedal. “Flerb, lol!!”” Paul proceeds to recreate one of the most iconic synth lines in cinematic history, drenched in alien Flerb magic, while grinning like a Cheshire Cat. 😂 Paul “oooo I want to hear more Flerb, !”
That came to him so quickly! Unreal.
The flerb sounded really good in it's own right too, lol.
Paul and Josh being sarcastic together are one of my favorite things in the guitar world.
We need more Mr Gilbert episodes. Every time he is on the episode is stellar! He fits the vibe of the show perfectly. Thanks guys and gals!
Seriously!
I’m a simple gal: I see a JHS video with Paul Gilbert, I click and watch the entire thing.
Need Josh to now visit Mr. Gilbert in Japan for the next episode.
Paul had no idea how to react to Josh's antics in this one, lol
In favor ✋🏻
This guy Gilbert makes the guitar youtubers, and I learned about him a year ago like most of you. Damn.
Paul Gilbert is everything right about music and guitar playing. The guy is just pure joy of music and I love watching/listening to anything he does.
Josh's face during the flerb riff was amazing
So was Paul's. He was digging it.
Nothing Special there, Just the typical FLERBFACE😂
This comment was at the top of my screen as that scene played. Flerbendipity.
Just seems like Paul is the type of guy you could call for any situation. Hoedown in a Kentucky gymnasium, Rock show in an arena, or polka in an ice chalet. Paul's the man
Pauls episodes are ALWAYS some of the best 👌
Paul has a roadie for just that heavy cable. Starting out with a Thin Lizzy riff put a smile on my face. 😃
It can be the most rainy, dreadful day, and PG can make me smile. The dude is a sunshine that happens to be a Legend of a guitar player.
❤
I like the rain.
I love it when Paul visits. I don’t know his music very well but I love watching him play and talk shop.
Paul is an encyclopedia of guitar knowledge and wisdom. Paul is a guitar wizard.
Hell yeah!
Learned more about myself and my pedal board in this vid then I have trying bogus crap over the last 20 years. God bless you Paul Gilbert. You too Josh. BTW. I love the Bonsai. No idea why I don't see that used more. In my top 10.
Paul has always been the coolest. He's the only famous guitar player I know that has always done his own website and answered emails.
I have been a fan of Paul since his and my hair metal days in the late 80s. It is amazing to see him now analyzing his sound in detail. What a time we live in.
Paul is a local boy made good. Started hearing about this kid who lived down the road who was amazing. By the time I started getting more pieces of the puzzle as to who this "Kid" was, off he was, for California. He turned out to be one of my biggest guitar influences.
Been watching Paul since his earliest days, lagging just a few years behind him in age, and I am impressed endlessly by his musicianship and technique, but most by his pleasant disposition and sense of humor. The planet needs more Paul Gilbert's everywhere!
Paul seems like such a nice dude.
Paul and Josh should have a nice-off... the whole world wins.
He is. He was my instructor at MI. Super cool guy.
@@frankyfingers068 that’s awesome!! Super jealous of that!
He is, but at the same time, if it comes out that he’s a serial killer, I wouldn’t be too surprised… He has that Dahmer vibe…
@@shaharbar don’t scare me like that, man! There aren’t a ton of shredders that aren’t full of themselves and Paul is one of them 😂
1. Paul is an amazing guitarist and a delight
2. Anyone puts mayo on top of the cheese on my sandwich and words will be had
3. The editors need a raise
Every RUclips video with Paul Gilbert is an honor to watch.
This one is no exception.
i freaking love Paul Gilbert, when he starts rocking out all different songs and being inspired. Pure rock n roll in this mans heart. 🤘
I dont know why Pablo Gilberto makes me so happy.... but he does.
He knows how to play every song ever written!...
21:46 "Are you a Scorpion and an Eagle too?" 😂😂😂
i laughed so hard at that 🤣
@@matthewaguirre9517 Me too 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
could you plz explain the joke?. I didnt get it.
@@ll14m4n The Carpenters, Scorpions and Eagles are the name of the bands
@@ivanargol7485 The Carpenters have always been known simply as "Carpenters". At least, in this current timeline. Just all sorts of wrong! They'll always be "The Carpenters" to me, and dolly had braces too.
These two are hilarious together!
Andy Timmons. WOW SO GLAD TO HEAR SOMEONE OTHER THAN ME SAY HIS NAME! By far hands down one of the best guitar players in terms of melodies and harmonies. His solos always fit songs well and have tons of flash and skill! DANGER DANGER IS UNDERRATED!
Josh I love your reaction when Paul played the Flerb setting on the Holy Grail lol. Paul Gilbert is probably the only guitar player worthy enough to make the Flerb sound cool 😎
Paul is very knowledgeable about pedals and every time I have seen a video of him putting a pedalboard together, no matter which pedals he chooses to include, the board always ends up sounding great.
Like EVH, Paul's fingers are where his tone comes from. No matter what gear, he sounds like himself. Instantly recognizable.
But as you can hear, without a good amp, even Paul sounds bad.
@@myuncle2 he sounded best when he used LANEY amps
confusing tone with style. Style is in the fingers. Groove is in the heart. Tone comes from gear.
Don't confuse tone with style.
Paul just seems like the nicest down to Earth person. Anytime I see him pop up on anything I stop and watch. The mayonaise thing is diffrent for sure. Beggining of flurb I thought was going to be Close encounters of the 3rd kind with the song and the aliens.
Riff historian meets pedal archivist! Such a powerful educational duo!
Also: Mayo goes on the bread because it has a flat topography and rough texture (essentially "bubbles" in the bake) that accommodates an even and controllable distribution with a knife. Putting it on an uneven and impermeable surface produces inconsistent results.
Mind, if you're applying mayo from a squeeze bottle without the assistance of a knife afterward, the results are probably "good enough" AND you don't have an extra utensil to clean later!
Paul is an absolute treasure. All the riffs+infectious love of all things guitar tone=Paul Gilbert. And he name-dropped some outrageous jazz musicians!
More Paul pleaseeeeee!!!!
P. G. IS A LEGEND AND A GENTLEMAN. I ATTENDED GIT IN 90-91 AND HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING HIM AND ATTENDING HIS SHOW AT M.I. AND AT THE TROUBADOUR THAT YEAR !!! GOOD TIMES !!!
PG is the golden retriever of guitar. There’s no one more enthusiastic about playing than him.
Tim Pierce is pretty close.
Paul came into Five Star Guitars where I work and we had a great conversation and he played and sang Doobie Brothers for me. It was pretty surreal to say the least but what an incredibly kind and warm person he is to be around. I love the hell outta that guy!
I love how no matter which pedals, Paul sounds like Paul, and that is just a fantastic reminder of all that is good in the world.
Paul is just the coolest man . One of the greatest guitar players ever and always has those good vibes going on.
This was such a fun episode. I love that I'm so deep in the PG multiverse that I already knew that Paul prefers his pedal board wood to come from high up in the tree for weight purposes.
Paul, I hope you get/got your guitars back. This guy is a treasure to music and HUMBLE AND NICE!
People who know, KNOW Paul Gilbert. Its a freaking tragedy that he never got wider fame or acclaim (IMHO. Maybe he's perfectly happy where he is, and more fame would have screwed that up!) Seriously one of best people on the planet.
Build the sandwich, mayo goes on the top piece of bread, then mustard, which then gets upended onto the meat stack.
Austin, you're a disgrace to the *ustins of the world.
Dear someone, anyone: I need a Phineas & Flerb pedal. Please?!
Josh... maybe toggles should have their options labeled. What's that? Oh, no reason why. Just spit-balling here.
Man's out here having a conversation with himself...
@@vvoof2601 you don't? sounds lonely. :D
That was such a great time!! AND the O-ring and knob trick.... CRAZY great info..Ive been under a rock for 40 years!
Absolutely digged this episode. Well done!!
Anything with Paul and you know it's gonna be fun, you guys really made my day! God bless you, and may the flerb be with you at all times.❤
You're always an inspiration, Paul! Thank you for continuing the love of guitar!
I think Paul needs to be a regular on the channel, he and Josh have a very complimentary energy and he’s always entitle to listen to, talking as well as playing. Some really great insights. Thanks guys.
amazing to watch, impressive to hear, so fun to experience content like that, thank you both
“My good friend Paul Gilbert” subtle flex Josh. Cheers.
Major Props for starting out with a Thin Lizzy riff
I love how he name checks the sounds of some many guitarists.
Sound library on PG is really vast
I love it When Josh and Paul get together always fun and informative as usual
That Series 3 delay and verb together sounded just perfect.
The chemistry between Paul and Josh got me smiling for the entire video.
The Home Depot joke might be the most truthful truth ever spoken on this channel. Lowe's too!!
What the hell????? This is literally next level guitar content!!! Great comeback!!!
This was so good! Thanks Josh! Thanks for inviting Paul out, he is one of my favorite players ever! and seems like the nicest dude.
I am continually amazed and incredibly entertained by these video's. Thank you for always brightening my day.
Incredible that he built a "Marshall amp" out of those pedals. Sounds amazing. Great video. Much fun.
Paul has some great tips on pedalboard building. I learned a few things watching this. Great video!
That was over way too soon! Really excellent! Could watch Paul and Josh and all the crew at JHS all day. Thanks for inviting us in. Peace
Paul Gilbert playing Thin Lizzy and VH riffs - my new favourite thing.....
Flerb pedals just quadrupled in price.
Paul is an amazing player and a great guy it seems, I love watching him play. Great video.
Also, mayonnaise is vile!
I don’t know Paul Gilbert’s music at all, but his playing in this video was great, and he seems like The Kind of Guy You Look Forward to Having a Beer With. Great episode!
Paul is a great guitar picker with an infectious personality. What's not to love ?
incredible you two can look into each other's eyes without either one having to look down. I'm so happy for you
How can you not love these two guys ?
Greetings from Brazil! Congratulations for the awesome research work! And thank you for sharing this amazing piece of history, somehow unknown for probably 99% of our people.
Man every tone and everything Paul played in this sounded absolutely perfect
he sounded horrible beacause of that silly amp.
@@myuncle2the sovtek sounded beautiful stop it
Paul is the most talented person ever. He is such a humble and nice guy.
Thanks for having him on. What an awesome way to spend a half hour.
OMG Paul Gilbert seems so approachable, I love his personality.
Ok. Josh and Paul (all familiar like they are my boys or whatnot) both have the same sense of humor and I will never get tired of their palaver.
I have been a Paul Gilbert fan since I first heard of him because of a little flimsy record in a copy of Guitar for the Practicing Musician. Over the years, I have grown to love and appreciate his position on music and art and artistry. He is one of the most influential musicians of his time.
I've been a JHS fan for about 10 years, and even though it's kinda fanboi creepy cringe, I love the folks there. I am a user, too. My first "modded" pedal was a JHS Soul Food and it really sold me on the idea of special sauce. Now I own more JHS stuff across multiple boards than would be polite to disclose, but I'll just say if you aren't working with these pedals, you should definitely give them a spot on your board because they deliver and have a ton of bang for the buck.
Great video!
Also, mayo goes everywhere. Same with hot sauce. We don't mayo shame here. 😁
Respect to Paul's skills to nail immediately the tones of my favourite heroes like LESLIE WEST, JOHNNY WINTER, ROBIN TROWER and EVH. We were lucky enough to meet Paul many years ago here in Athens Greece in a clinic
Great simple person, no arrogance like a REAL SUPERSTAR SHOULD BE! Great video Josh
You forgot THIN LIZZY!
This episode was absolutely spot on!
Awesome stuff guys!
PG is so down to earth
Senior Pablo Gilberto ❤
Señor
@@LumaTo No, este parece que fue a la facultad, no es el que fue abajo a mexico si tuvo problemas jajaja
So much fun to watch and enjoy the silliness mixed in.
Amazing 80 tone masterclass by Paul G.
I love Paul's ability to just pull out riffs from songs and just ripping through the neck like a monster but with so MUCH soul!! Thank you Paul and JHS for the video!! PS: I think last time I had Mayo it was on the actual bread not on the add on pieces of the sandwich, you guys LOL.
I really liked the concept of this video, please more! 🙏
Paul was my #1 hero when I was a teenager, and honestly, still one of my hero's today. Such a special and talented guy. He's one of a kind!
Paul you are amazing, thanks for the joy of music.
Paul.... I just love you for being you and I love your music too
The FLERB riff actually sounded good, what a madman
This is amazing! Love Pauls insight in different tones. That pedal board is inspiring.
Paul is absolutely spectacular!
Would watch a monthly Josh/Paul show very enthusiastically.
I love Paul. Such a warm loveable dude.
My favorite episode! Thanks. I hope to see more of Mr. Gilbert here. Bravo.
7:56 Finally, someone who recognizes the potential of flerb!
Such a fluent player with simplistic ideals. Love it.
Mayo always on the bread
What a great episode! So many talking heads out there that aren't touring professionals, with well-listened original music. To watch and listen to a top musician stands above all the rest. Thanks.
I used to be an electrician. I stole my first pedal board out of the freezer of a popeyes I was working in as an apprentice. It was just a wire rack that I ziptied and stapled a few pieces of wood to so it would sit at an angle.
wow this is so cool! i never seen paul gilbert actually show process of building a pedal board. thanks!
Y'all been sleeping on flerb
Love the simplicity of that board. Sounds great!
