I completely agree with you. Jack Campbell was a GREAT pick for the Detroit Lions. I've been a Lions fan all of my life, and, of course frustrated with them most of the time. Jack, I believe, can revitalize the Lions defense, while being a great influence on the entire team. Go Iowa an Go Lions!!
I'm a Lions fan and been hearing both opinions on the draft. I think people are making the mistake that pick value = building the best team this year and it's making people argue about different things. Two things can be true at once: 1) The Lions didn't get great value out of their top couple picks. Especially when it comes to making the most out of the cheap rookie contracts that come out of top picks. The top paid positions just make so much more than the less valued positions that rookie contracts for EDGE, QB, WR, etc make a huge difference when you're filling out the rest of your team. 2) The Lions picks are going to make them the best team they could be this year. While RB and ILB are some of the lowest valued positions, ILB was their biggest weakness on defense by far and a spot that you have to have solid play or it makes everyone else's job harder. Campbell is the exact player that they needed. Similarly, if Gibbs was just a rusher than I wouldn't like the pick as much, but a super fast RB that can play the slot is the type of player that Ben Johnson loves. Both of these are more valuable *this year* than a raw EDGE rusher like Wilson would have been by far. All this on top of the fact the Lions have a ton of cap space and are playing in the weakest NFC North we have seen and probably will see for a while, means that they're willing to lose some value on the picks to give them the best chance to win this year. I've been watching the Lions lose and miss the playoffs for so long and they finally have a team with potential, I'm all for taking the risk on the "low-value" draft to give them the best chance to win right now. If they have to pay for it in a couple years when they have to decide on RB and ILB 5th year options while other teams get EDGE's on their options then that's fine with me.
You forget the value Campbell will add as to the team culture, a humble farm kid from Iowa perfectly aligns with Dan Campbell's style and system which is great leaders high character
I agree with your take on value. But don't loose sight of overall player grade. Though the positions the Lions passed on have higher grades the players at those positions had lower grades than the players taken. And in the case of edge rusher another player would have caused a log jam at the position with the players already on the roster.
@@dnice583 we only got Hutchinson on contract next year far as edge rushers no guard after this year only Sutton and Lucas at cb after this year jamo suspended 6 games depending on 33 year old wr to play x whole linebacker and dt room needed upgrades
Hearing different draft gurus talking about him in regards to not being as athletically gifted or as fast as some of the other prospects at the same position didn’t help a lot either. Not a lot of tv time but after watching his tape/highlights I was instantly impressed. Yes he doesn’t have blazing speed but he more then makes up for it by playing smart. Watch his line to the ball. He doesn’t over pursue very often and his angles to the ball carrier are really good. High character, great human being from the sounds of it too. I think he will be a great addition to our team.
Excellent point! Lions have never had a long-term linebacker since Spielman and his shortcoming was covering backs out the backfield. He seems good against the run but lets see how he responds to an elite back catching a pass on 3rd & 10 and stopping him from gaining 5 yds yac for a 1st dn. I do believe he will help on the run but our DT's have to improve in that area unless his run game is at an elite level. our 2022 draft was rated 9th and 20th on 2 platforms end of season. The jets was #1. rating drafts before play in worthless
