    Today is warm and sunny here in the U.P. of MI. The only snow left is from where it was plowed.
    My husband has some material on order to build your pop up camper. If you want to see what I will pull it with go to Better Bike and look at their Peble.
    What I hope to do is pick up my bike at their shop and ride it home. This caused no end of concern to my husband.
    Your pop up is indeed a game changer in getting me safely home. It is so very light yet will allow me a safe place to stop any time.
    I no longer have to worry about pitching a tent in the dark because I did not cover enough miles between camp grounds.
    Part of my route is threw a very remote part of Canada so being self contained is important. The International Bridge allows bike traffic so I chose that route rather than having to use faries to island hop across the straights.
    Thank you for taking the time to make a video. Just making the pop up camper is inpressive.

    Dude, you just created a new category for the next Australian Solar Car Challenge. Solar e-bike campers. Teams from all over building the lightest, most compact campers and bike (or recumbent trike) sets, ride the entire 3000km trip from Darwin to Adelaide. I think they might have to give them longer than 6 days though. Rider has to carry water, food etc but can buy more at control stops. Just brainstorming, don't mind me
    Nice looking build you've created though. For use in South Australia the camper is sadly a little over-width (maximum 85cm wide to be street legal) but anyone building one would obviously modify their build to suit local laws. Your's is still good for inspiration

      Might also be why the hipocausts were so poppular with the romans. Even without a fire for anything else than cooking, you don't lose nearly as much heat to the ground. And if you keep a tile openable, then you have a fridge right there, in the winter.

    quite interesting concept you've built there , I'm in the process of building another bike camper trailer andi I like the pop up idea you have created . the only issue I had with the tear drop design that I used in my original model was cross winds causing considerable swaying , which I believe your design will help me with that issue . I quite enjoyed your video and thanks for sharing it.

      highenergyog Thanks for the positive words. Cross winds were a concern of mine. This worked well and I had no problem with wind at all. Once the bedding, clithing and gear were in is was weighted down enough not to let wind be a problem. Look forward to any new designs you come up with!

    Thank you for showing us your trailer. I’ve had an idea for awhile to do a hand truck camper, but that will have to wait until summer. I don’t have a shop or a place to work on stuff, so that’s why I’m thinking the hand truck could work as a frame, besides, I’ve had stuff stolen from my touring bike in the past when I left it parked outside a library. At least I can take a hand truck indoors. You’ve given me inspiration to try it.

    • @ontheroadwithyode390
      @ontheroadwithyode390 6 лет назад

      qqq uiop Just a suggestion. Build something similarin size to a handtruck that you can take inside. But a basic hand truck is heavy. And the more weight your pulling makes for a not so nice experience. If your strapped cash wise , look for old jogger strollers to canibalize. Good strong wheels and light aluminum tubes to work with.

    You are on to something. I rode my recumbent bicycle across America in 2007 pulling a Burley trailer. I like this idea.There were many times when I would set up or break down my tent in frigid weather or rain. I agree with some commenters that it looks ridiculous but I already looked ridiculous on my recumbent bike pulling that Burley. I didn't GAF. Keep up the good work and keep improving on each project. Good luck.

      James Fulks Thanks James. I have had all winter to come up with new ideas and improvements and am looking foreward to spring here in Canada to finish up my winter job and be able to get working on it! Im envious of your coast to coast adventure and plan on one myself (Canadian version). It sure is nice after a long day to be able to stop and get set up for bed in a few minutes with a warm dry bed with a regular size pillow and not have to deal with a soggy stinky tent and not have to make the bed. And as far as the ridiculousness.....it only looks odd because its different. And Im just fine with that too. Good luck on future adventures! Cheers!

    Very cool. I plan to do a world tour next year. Was thinking about doing the US portion of the tour on an ebike towing a trailer with solar panels to charge the batteries while on the road. The only thing is that you can’t fly with ebike batteries, and packing the trailer would be a pain.l.so when i go overseas, I’d have to change my rig to a regular touring bike. So I may forget about an ebike altogether. But still, i think they are cool and would like to try it someday.

    VERY cool! I will be bike packing out of panniers and a tent this spring. I live in Port Angeles, WA. With a short ride on the ferry, I could be open to an entirely new realm for exploration.
    I can see how such a trailer would be much easier to set up. I admire your ingenuity. I had a tough time simply designing a small bike trailer. Interesting to hear you say you carry an extra battery. I have been thinking of getting a second battery for charging while the other is in use. I have one small 20 watt solar panel that will keep two 12volt, 9Ah batteries (wired in parallel) charged during the day. They will be used to charge my trike battery via an inverter at the end of the day. Hope it works.

    • @ontheroadwithyode390
      @ontheroadwithyode390 5 лет назад

      It wont work with an inverter. By the time the power generated by a solar panel that size , goes through a controller and through an inverter ,all of the electricity has been used. You need a minimum 120 watts going through a Genason GV-8 boost mppt controller to two batteries run in parralel.

    Phenomenal!!! WOW, I Love this!!!!
    First, Yes, I too would like to see the underside to see what and how you built your frame,
    Second, What does it Weigh???
    Third, How much $$$ do you have into it??
    and Last, I'd revise and edit a newer video, showing construction details clearer, but then I'd make plans available for purchase!
    I know I'd buy 'em! (and I'd bet a lot of other folks would too)
    Bitchin' design and what a neat rig!
    Well Done Sir!!!

    • @ontheroadwithyode390
      @ontheroadwithyode390 7 лет назад +5

      53Peterbilt The camper by itself weighs a little over 7 lbs. The solar panels weigh 10. Loaded with my bedding, clothes and various tools and knick knacks it totals about 30 lbs. Its packed away for the winter at the moment and is too difficult to dig oyt to take a pic of the underside. Its constructed with 1x2's on edge in the form of a rectangle with 5" long corner brackets cut on 45 in each corner. Then two pieces of 1x2 once again on edge forming a triangle protruding forward and coming together to not only provide strength, but also a place to mount hitch hardware. One other cross bracket where the wheels mount . Notice the wheels set back and not in the center. This provides better tracking. I just added up the approximate costs...about $60 cdn. Hope this helps! And thank you for the kind words.

    Idea, design a bike camper that is a slide out. Right down the middle that you remove a pin in the axle grab a tire and pull camper open. Then have roof pannels connect together like an A frame with side pannels that act like shingles that have weather stripping. Front pannel locks together with a window with a fantastic fan. Back pannel locks together with a inner screen door and a solid outer door. Designed all out of coraplast. Big enough for two people. 😊

      PARADOXICLES I don't know where you live but here in Canada the "plastic cardboard" is available at any hardware store. The brand name is "Coroplast" and it is about $20.00 per sheet. This took two sheets with some left over. Good luck with your version! Have fun!

      @ZOMBIEHEADSHOTKILLER 6 лет назад

      Doran Amatto
      yeah, the hardware store here its 22$ for the 4mm.....and they want like 80$ for the 10mm....which i feel is too much... especially sense they only do white ( not the green, black and clear i need)
      Fast Signs had originally told me 12$ for for the 4mm and 34$ for the 10mm...which i was gonna buy...but now they are telling me its 40$ and 134$ per sheet, respectively, which is insane! For the 15 sheets i need at that price would cost over 1100$!!!!! before they said it was only about 250$ total......no way im paying 5x the price cuz the new boss is a dick!
      Sense they only do large orders of 250 sheets or more, the people at Corroplast, actually recommended i talk to their 2 manufacturers here in Colorado, one has more fair pricing, 14$ for 4mm......but only white, and only 4mm.......the other one, i havent been able to contact yet.
      this is normal for me, no one ever has the parts i need.... i dunno why.

      oh its gonna be more than just a trailer...its gonna be a bike sized RV!!!! with 400w of solar to power my electric bike!
      here is a link, to a car sized rv trailer im basing it off of, so imagine this, small enough for a bike, and green, and with solar on top.
      ruclips.net/video/BuK47--luPY/видео.html
      it will be exactly the width and length of 4x 100w solar panels...the walls will be 2 layers of 4mm (green outside, black inside, plus s little bit of clear for windows), with foam insulation in between the wall panels.The cargo area and bed will be the 10mm, i need some extra, sense the multiple parts wont fit on one sheet because of their shape..........also, there is an extra sheet of 4mm cuz i wanna make a folding canoe ( preferably a clear one) that will go with the trailer.
      ps, if i cant get colors, ill have to do paint, but colored plastic will look nicer, and SHOULD be cheaper...sadly i cant paint the white clear though.

      Joseph DuPont I only use this in the summer so staying warm is not a problem. Actually quite the oposite, I have a usb fan that I have hooked up to the battery in order to stay cool. As far as the front pegs, the have little rubber feet on them and I haveng had an issue with them sinking into the ground.

Good luck and I hope to see your finished design! Taje care...

    Yode, congrats to this great and tiny camper. I plan a similar project and I am very inspired by your approach. Could you please tell me details of your trailer? width and height of your "living room" (unfolded)? and I'm also interested in the floor. Do you really lie on the platics-sheet (you call it "curoplast"?) which is clamped/screwed into the wooden frame? Or is there a solid (plywood)board under it? The video stops to soon.... or is there a second video which finishs you show?-

    • @ontheroadwithyode390
      @ontheroadwithyode390 5 лет назад +1

      It's 32 " wide x 6 ft. Not sure of height but I can sit up in it. Its made of "Coroplast" with a wood frame of 1x2 spruce. There is no plywood base. Just the coroplast atatched to the frame with lathe screws every 3 inches. Plywood is unneccisary and heavy. I have a two inch foamy over top of a Thermorest air pad.

    • @martinahaus2726
      @martinahaus2726 5 лет назад

      @@ontheroadwithyode390 Thanks for the info. I agree that a plywood plate would be heavy. How thick is the coroplast? I would be interested how you have setup the chassis and the main frame. I would expect at least some cross struts. A look under the trailer would be great - thats why I asked, if there is a second video which may gives a look under the trailer ;-)

    • @ontheroadwithyode390
      @ontheroadwithyode390 5 лет назад +1

      No, no second vid until I build the next version. 1x2's on edge in a rectangle. 45 degree corner braces about 8" long. Then two more 1x2's on edge running from approx 1/3 on each side to a point protruding 6" in the front forming a place to mount a hitch sandwiched with two 1/8 aluminium plates. Thats it.
      Coroplast is the same material realestate signs are made of. Buy at hardware store. No cross braces as the Coroplast eventually sags a bit like a hammock.

    • @martinahaus2726
      @martinahaus2726 5 лет назад

      @@ontheroadwithyode390 Great! That's what I expected. I wonder that the coroplast is so resistant/strong enough to behave like a hammok. But I'll follow your approach and hope that I'll find the same resistant material like you. ;-)

    Hey there....I am looking at all these trailers, which I must say I like, but have a question, which I cannot answer for myself, hence I am going to ask you......Suppose you are somewhere away from home on a trip. Now you want to go and shop for food....what do you do with your bike and trailer??? Do you take both of them to the store and leave it outside, locked up, hoping, that someone does not steel it before you come out. Or, say, you leave the trailer at the camp site....do they guard it for you?....I have heard of stories of people got robbed at camp sites, when they left for shopping or for beach or any other reason. Management won't assume responsibility... How do you go about this dilema???? Thanks

      Jiri Tichy Hey Jiri, this is a bit of a canumdrum. Fortunately, people are fairly resoectfull here in Canada. But that being said, there is always a chance of comming across someone that isnt so much. Especialy when in larger cities. I haven't ever left either my bike or the trailer alone for long periods of time for this reason. I lock the trailer to the bike and in turn the bike to something secure while going into say a grocery store for a short time. Also, the trailer does create a fair amount of interest so its easy to meet people that have secure buildings or secure back yards that I can lock them up in if I happen to be taking part in some sort of function where I can't bring them. But for the most part, I am always with them while on my adventures. Also, while I am sleeping, I not only lock the trailer to the bike, I also have a small (loud) cable alarm that goes off when a pin is pulled and is also hidden on the undercaridge of the trailer and connected to the bike whith a very fine wire. I hope this answers yoyr questions. Take care!

    Hey Yode, Love the concept and thank you for sharing it. Curious what you are using for the hitch/yoke on the back tire? I am building a hitch/coupler that would attach in the same location but I am failing to find something that attaches to both sides of the back wheel and up to either the rack or the seat post. Looks like yours is silver with reflectors and arcs over the rear tire. I can't see much more with the side/battery bags in the way. Any help would be great!

    • @ontheroadwithyode390
      @ontheroadwithyode390 7 лет назад

      Bradley Scherzer Yeah....that one stumped me for a bit. The solution was to buy a 3/8 x 1-1/2 aluminum flat bar and run a piece down from the rack. Then another piece from axle to axle . I bent this piece by hand in about 5 min pushing against a post. Then bolted them together where they met. I also added a small piece of square 1-1/2 tubing on the end for strength. Two holes drilled where the wheel skewer goes through, BUT, heres the key. You have to find a slightly longer skewer. Like one that comes in a conversion kit for a trail a bike or a childrens trailer. Good luck!

      James Hart First off, the possitive feedback is very appreciated. I am in the process of putting together a version of this with a frame that can be easily assembled out of a different material other than wood but has a similar weight. The wheels are from a jogger stroller, 12 inch wheels. Its 32" wide and just under 6ft long. (I'm 5' 7). Notice that the wheels are further back from center. That helps with tracking. Send me a pic if you build a version. I'd love to see it. Cheers!

      There are a few ways. You can buy towing hitches for bikes but you need to know the correct fraze. So for a ball hitch like for vehicles search for ball hitch for bycles. These are really cheap and can be got from ebay. They fix to the seat post and also alow for the bike to tilt in corners. And the turning circle is quite tight. I have another type which is stronger also attaches to the seat post with no tilt. There is a third type which fixes to the back wheel nut. Here is a link to my solar camper setup which I am building at the moment. There is loads of explanations of everything. Right at the bottom is a video so far.
