i re-purposed a 20" kids bass drum found at a flee market for like $15-$20. the drum started out as a mini kit for my little brother when he was younger but he never reall took to playing. I then used it and some other spare drums at my friends house as a kit to leave at his house for practice and random quick shows/jams.
Japanese saws are just about my favorite tools. Lightweight; perfect for non-construction tasks, which is most everything under 3’. And you said "I could call this drum a wrap" unironically--that ain't easy ;-)
I bought a 5 piece SP set from facebook 7 years ago. I was honestly very surprised on how decent the hardware was. I have since been upgrading for the past couple years, and it is still my main kit.
I like the spl hardware I found a brand new spl velocity 5 pc kit for $99.00 at guitar center and as I changed the heads I was suprised to find how good the hardware was on this kit. This will be my truck gig kit that will stay on my truck you really did an awesome job with this kit
Awesome project! I bought a 5 pc SPL for $150 rewrapped with mint colored contact paper. You’re right, the hardware is legit. I even made the Tom into a snom with some creativity in hole lineups for the Tom legs. I put an aquarium batter on too and agree it sounds great. I put the SPL logos back on too. Keep up the great work. Love watching your projects.
I use a kid drumset for gigs. I added a DIY kick riser and the drumset has a 13 inch floortom. The only thing I needed to change on the floortom were the floortom brackets and the floortom legs, because the legs were way too short 😂
Man, that was beautiful. I love drum restoration videos, but this is something else... the drums look and sound amazing. I love that snare sound in high tuning, and the brown finish with the black lugs look perfect 🤎🖤🤎🖤
This will make a cool grab n' go kit for small venues. SPL drums are surprisingly good for the money. A nice score for sure! Up here in downeast maine on the coast, it's all small old bars and rustic restaurants, sometimes with decks overlooking the ocean. You get squeezed into a corner and space is tight. But I love cozy small gigs like that, backing up small bands, or acoustic acts, maybe backing up singer songwriter friends, quick last minute jams with friends. If they comp a meal and the food is good even better! (Fresh seafood on the house anyone? No lobster though, of course! Haha..) My small 18" Tama kit has many many miles on it from just that, and it's sometimes just a bass, snare, high hats, and a cymbal or two is all you need. I'll throw a muffle ring on the snare and grab my favorite multi rods and go have some fun!
that was a perfect vid. a lot af detail crammed into 10 min. a great final product. and to top it off a nice middle finger to the man at the end. loved this!
Sound percussion Lab Guitars centers supposed lower end kit...but interestingly enough, the birch shells are cousins to the yamaha's stage custom birch shells...for half the price. The new hardware is worthy of comparison to the other big guys and once the head's are changed out to quality heads much like the Remo ambassador coated as mentioned and some creative tuning on the batter and resonance heads ( maybe a 2.3mm hoop instead of the 1.3mm common kits come stock with for rim shots) and Shazam! This kit is without a doubt a contender out there for a reasonable price. " Cheap Drum's Guy" started out with SPL'S. Your playing was spot on, in front of pro coverage! Kit looked fantastic also speaking from a carpenter. 👍
That's a clever project, and the results are pretty good. Did you give a good look at the bearing edges? Just wondering if that would be another touch that could upgrade the sound even further?
Nice job on the kit. Looks like a lot of work, but it came out nice. I've done refinishing work on musical instruments but not to that degree. Great video. Kudos to you.

I like the way that you got the kit to sound! The refinish was nice! It's definitely a good setup for small venues!
Agreed! Thanks for watching

Flush cut saws are great!
Man, i love this chanel. What a great video
Thanks

There is a lot of potential in their drums.
10/10 can say that kick drum is awesome!
Good numbers!

It’s not terrible, totally can work if you need it to.

Nice work! Sounds like a cool project.
I just got an spl junior set for $24! This is what led me to this vid! I may paint them. I'm not sure. This set will be good for small venues.
Got a deal on this same kit & am going to use this as a guide so we have a tour-kit that’s a bit easier to fit in the van. Thanks for the run down!
Nice!

I just love your project videos, Mike. You are such a talented young man and so interesting to listen to.
Thanks!

I play a lot of kick snare hat gigs!

Haha!
This is a pretty rad idea. This would be perfect few of the restaurants in town we play.
Make one!
Another great video Mike! That snare... a thing of beauty..I'm a huge fan of a nice pingy snare drum sound (Bill Bruford/Chad Sexton). You nailed it.
Thanks, it certainly has a home in my arsenal.
I once used the bass drum of a kit like this and turned it into a 16" rack tom and it felt and sounded great
Another great for these!
For myself i would definately have a use for this small kit because it will work well in chamber music and Christmas carols.
It's certainly great for picking up and moving quickly.
Moving to LA mid September and smaller drums always fit the bill in my opinion especially when trying to move cross country
Good luck with your move.
Brilliant! Like that very much. Thinking about buying a used kids set and try that myself.
It’s a fun project for sure, go for it.
Tip on the sanding: two foam pads and then the sand paper. Makes sanding radiuses much easier.
Are you talking to hold it in place?
Your videos are so great man. Love just relaxing and listening to your voice and grooves. Always interesting and entertaining. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for watching
Nicely done! I love seeing folks making legit instruments out of entry level gear. Fantastic sound!
Hey man! Love your channel as well. Keep up the great work.
You M. Knight Shyamalaned an advertisement in there. Nice work. Drums sound great.
Ha!
Love it! Amazing work and very entertaining video! 👏🏻 🥁
Appreciate it!
This is pure gold! 🏆
Thanks!
Nice work man!! I'm turning 43 this month and wondring If I can take some woodworking courses. I guess it's gonna work for us drummers.
Most definitely!

These shells were definitely not birch, or any preferable wood, but again, I was impressed.
Sounds sweet, nice colours too
Thanks!
Nicely done! They sound good!🥁
Thank you!
I appreciate what you’ve done here
Thanks!
Love the transformation! I have a lonely 14" SP floor tom that could use the same treatment! 😄
I sort of wanted to add a 10" rack and 12/13" floor tom to this kit.
What a nice kit! Would use it for small living room gigs
Exactly!
Exactly!
Perfect D&B rig!
Yes!
Thanks for the video you gave me some ideas
Glad I could help
That's a clever project, and the results are pretty good. Did you give a good look at the bearing edges? Just wondering if that would be another touch that could upgrade the sound even further?
They weren't bad honestly so I didn't bother re-cutting them.
Nice job on the kit. Looks like a lot of work, but it came out nice. I've done refinishing work on musical instruments but not to that degree. Great video. Kudos to you.
Thanks.
great project!
Thanks.
Nice kit!
Thanks!
luv the kit!
Thanks!
The sounds remind me of Steve Jordan, or quest love. Tight, crisp, and nasty!!!
That’s exactly what I hear too
Cool project
Thanks!
Damn you go all out
All for the clicks.
haha I love your hats sound most!
Cool video though. Sounds fun to mix it up from a reg set
I agree, fun in a change of pace.
Look and sound awesome mike very nice .
Thanks.
Very nice, I'd play something like that. Have you ever considered making a "suitcase" drumset? I think that snare would work perfectly.
I’ve considered it, but I prefer to play cylinders.
gran trabajo Mike!
Muchas Gracias!
You gained a sub today! Great video!
Thanks so much!
Significantly nicer than the mini kit I made from parts. You're right about the Garbage hardware you usually get!
Oh yeah, those stamped lucks that split once you tension them are terrible.
Great video, very inspiring, thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
I wonder if these would be a good candidate for an eDrum conversion.
Possibly!
very tasteful, grooving drumming
Thanks!
your snare clamp set up at the end??? No stand, can you add links to the clamps used? Love it. Thanks

Nice job 🥁😅👌🏼
Thanks!
Good times nicely done 👍
Thanks for the visit
I had that same set !! ✌😂
Not a bad kit!
what kind of attachment did you use for the snare in the last scene?
It's a hoop clip, you find it on Amazon. Made by Ross
What are the sizes of the kick drum, and the snare drum? Please
16” kick, 10” snare
@malonedrum i mean, is it 16x10" or 16x8"?
@@jessdrummer_ probably close to 10”
For the algorithm. ✊
🤘🏼
What was that mount you used for the snare on the hat stand?
This guy here! amzn.to/3DLhlWL
nice
Thanks
👍
👍
Amen break loading….
Of course!
Put some muffling in that kick and it'll sound as good as the snare
I prefer it with a little more tone, like a hip hop sound, but I see your point for more standard use.
7:36 chris adler signature lol😅
It kind of looks like it too.
Youre like rdavidr if he still did interesting stuff!
I love rdavidr! I know his content had changed a bit over the last couple years, but hopefully we’ll see some new project videos again down the road.
