One thing a lot of people don't realize - when you factory build a brand new garbage truck, there's typically a lot of options for adding items that will assist with work flow. Many manufacturers have options for tool holders (and all kinds of other things). If a truck doesn't come with tool holders, crews will typically jam a broom behind a grab handle on the side of the hopper. IF your fender is long enough, you could go buy a rubber clamps / straps that you can bolt on to hold a broom.
As for the gloves, you are probably going to be the cleanest operator out there. Many rear load crews just accept the dirt and bring it in the cab with them (most people don't own their own truck, they just run the wheels off someone else's). Many years ago, when I drove rear load, I drove that truck with my gloves on, because I was in and out of the truck at most stops - it just didn't make sense to take them on and off for over a thousand stops a day. Most drivers and helpers end up putting their gloves either up on the dash or on the floor, in the cab, under the seat right by the door.
You would probably be much happier with an outside under-body tool box (if one will fit on the chassis frame rails). This would be a great place to store items you don't want in the cab.
Also, I can't remember if you said you all ready had one, but you NEED a spill kit. If you don't, just go buy one. Eventually you'll break a hydraulic line, and it's going to make a mess on the ground, you'll be happy you have a spill kit when it happens.
As for stuff falling off, it happens. Most brand new trucks have some kind of bugs during the first year, then you have a few years of decent performance, and eventually the truck gets old and really starts falling apart. Luckily for you, your duty cycle on your truck is really low, so that truck should last quite a while.
Keep up the great work! Years ago, I thought I wanted to do exactly what you are doing, but now I'm on the manufacturing/sales side of the solid waste game. It's fun watching you go through the process - learning the whole way!

As someone starting a transportation company, commercial vehicles are a different beast when it comes to warranties. If it’s the engine or other part of the vehicle moving, that’s where I’ll care about warranty. The body? Forget it. I’ll fix whatever to get it back to working. You’ll get used to being your own in-house mechanic. You’ll just need to determine what you are comfortable and capable of doing in-house versus what you need to outsource.

Great video Brad, I can see that you are beginning to get more into the groove of operating this truck. My only efficiency tip, is to make sure that PTO switch is turned on before you grab the can at each stop. I noticed that towards the end of the video, you were already figuring out, to pull the trash into the bin, from the previous dump, while you grab the next can, to make room for the next dump, excellent. How about that juice ha? Makes you wanna pull that plug and keep it out lol. I also noticed that some people really overload their cans, they might need a 2nd can. With night photography, you really need a camera with a larger lens, like a Sony FX3 for example, but thats like a 3K+ camera, so likely a no go for trash video's.

I work for a large truck leasing company and when a customer has a problem with their brand new truck and they are too far away to come back and have us deal with it in our shop, we will send a vendor out to make the repair for us. Wouldn't hurt to contact the dealer and tell them you don't have time to waste a day or two driving back and forth and ask them to have someone more local to you come out and fix it. Either way, its your money, your truck and your decision.

I’m a municipal fire chief in NC and we buy fire trucks all the time that are all across the country. If you haven’t already done so, I would see if they have a mobile service tech or even a place that they’ve authorized folks to do their warranty work. It hasn’t happened to you yet and I hope it doesn’t, but you may have a serious issue come up. I would of course then call the dealer and explain your situation and see if they have mobile techs or a place they have or would consider letting them do the warranty work. Happens with fire trucks all the time.

So I work as a driver/labour on a much bigger rear loader compactor collecting large item hard waste. It doesn't surprise me that things are already falling off the truck. They all have different personalities and qwerks that you have to get used to.
We just got 8 new trucks and they all broke within the first 2 hours of using them. They all leak hydraulic fluid out of the fittings and running the PTO is all different for each truck.
You just have to keep using it and learn the qwerks of the truck and you'll be fine. Constant problems are just the way of life with these trucks.

This practice is against US Federal law. If you push back, manufacturers will not void the warranty. Check out the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. Essentially, the mfg. must prove that your work directly caused a failure before they can refuse repairs.

Hi Brad, I have a tip when you pick up your container, lower the compacting arm, then dump your container and then let the compting arm close and rise while you take your container away again, this would save you a lot of time instead of waiting until that is completely gone and only then take the container away because the container was not yet on the ground

Good to see its going well for you. When you tip a cart, keep the blade all the way up, which will allow for more trash to fit in the hopper. Also use the machine to your advantage! Shake the cart to get the trash out, as opposed to grabbing it yourself. Stuff falling off the truck is normal for the first little while, things are tightened to the minimum at the plants, and the owner usually has to tighten them.

Hey Brad, no need to apologize for getting philosophical on bad purchases. If anything, it makes me feel better about some financial purchase screw-ups I've made.
And that's for people telling you how you should do things, you have a method of operation that works the best for you, and if it works, then no one should be complaining. (Obviously helpful and friendly suggestions are always good though)
I have a small lawn care business out in Utah (a lot of my current setup inspired by you), and people think I am stupid for using an SUV for my work instead of a pickup truck. But for my method of operation and how I do things, an SUV works way better for me than a truck.

Completely agree with you on the warranty, Brad. It would have been a bad business decision to walk away on the terrible soldering job. Doesn't affect the functionality of the truck, not worth dealing with. Maybe give a short call to the dealer to get a rebate on the truck for your time painting it and the loss in value. But definitely not worth the trip. I hope this truck runs smoothly for a while!

Also brooms and flat shovels we normally put them on the opposite side of where you stand through the hold on handles to your step. Also inbetween the cab and the back of the bed we could put tools there as well that stay away from the compactor and everything else.

I know you're avoiding the CDL trucks but a old autocar / Mcneilus rear end loader would speed things up even faster. Dual tippers, bigger hopper, auto neutral, PtO runs even when you drive house to house. Quick tip instead on reaching for trash bags in the hopper, keep a old garden hoe at reach use it to pull or push garbage so you dont have to keep reaching in.

I saw some Amazon boxes; tell your customs NOT to trash and recycle them. That will save space in the trash can.

You make a lot of good points, similar things with tow trucks. Wreckers are usually built with a lot of human intervention which causes some problems.

When we rented an RV I asked the folks working (winter so it was slow) how often they turnover the vehicles - selling the old ones and buying new RVs.
Yearly. They are so poorly built they dump them after a year and buy new ones.
I'm curious if your competitors are also small operations... might be worth a support agreement with them if so. If your truck breaks down and goes in the shop, they pickup your routes and vice-versa. Just agree on some price for that? At least until you get big enough to need a second truck and crew. Once you have two trucks you can handle downtime by swapping crews and running the main truck.

some good advice for cleaning and stuff like that inside with the truck highly recommend getting those power washes with the hot water tanks on them and a soap attachment as well when I had my machine. I had one of those hot water pressure washers with a giant tank and it had like a chemical inside of it, but this chemical was like organic, so it cleaned the inside pretty good. I was like you when I first started garbage business. They got myself a little Isuzu NRR with a new way body on the back. and yeah, it was a learning curve but good for you man. Just wanted to give you some more advice about the cleaning processes of them.

On the highway definately have the packer down, here in Australia its driver policy for that. When cycling I belive your truck is able to keep tipping the bin, when the packer is about halfway up you should be able to tip the rest of the garbage out. This will make things a lot faster. Thanks for the video see you next week!

Make sure you calculate all your costs to make sure you are making ends meet. Just as an example, if you assume the truck will only last 5 years , that means it costs you about $520 a week for the truck. You also have maintenance, insurance, tags, etc.
I would hate to see after working so hard, that you just lose money.

We aren't there yet but one day will be and that was part of the rationale behind the truck. I just got the statement for the first HELOC payment, it was $860, which is less than we thought it would be. With 80 cans on the street as of today we are looking at $240 monthly in liner costs (if we still used them). So that is almost 30% of the payment in liners!

I agree about the truck's manual - for a $130,000 garbage truck like this, a printed manual in a binder is desirable. If they want to include a copy on a flash drive in addition, that's even better, flash drive are fairly cheap these days.

I always say you buy the dealer, not the equipment. Everything breaks and if you can’t get parts or service it’s no good to anyone.

While I do agree that yes, not everything should be perfect, something to note is that a corner cut will lead to another corner ready to go. It's ok to have tolerance, but at the end of the day, you can't improve a product if you aren't A: aware that there is an issue, and B: held accountable for those issues. Fit and finish is one thing and cosmetic problems like that plate are admittedly minor, but them being willing to ruin a product in any form just for the sake of advertising isn't something that should be brushed off. Even if I don't warranty it, I would be reconsidering who I do business with in the future. That is me however, I am an EMT and a thrift store owner, so what do I know about purchasing garbage trucks.
However, this is how we get companies like most large building companies in the U.S (Taylor Morrison, Cleary Building, etc...), I have been in more new homes that are piss poor in quality, talking leaks in the roof due to poorly installed shingles, or warped floors due to improperly made foundations, yet people shrug that stuff off because "It's made by people, they aren't peftect." on one hand ya, but when you have glaringly obvious issues like that, it should never be handed off like that. Contemptment breeds exploitation, I am not gonna blame you for making your decisions, I just know that nothing will change if its not forced, and I feel telling people to essentially live with those issues unless you want to waste your life is a bad way to explain what you were getting at in my opinion.

Seeing you do this makes me wish you could extend the hydraulic arm so the trash can is lifted higher and it dumps easier. Maybe in the future have sensors added that automates the cycling of the hopper. That would be awesome additions to your quality of life there. But not easy ones to add.

Unfortunately the Aisin Transmission in your Isuzu doe’s not have the “Hot Live PTO” feature like a 20 yd or larger truck will have. With those larger trucks the pto runs directly off of the front of the engine or rear PTO off the flywheel housing. This allows full hydraulic operation with the transmission in gear and stopped. On your Aisin transmission the PTO is run off of the input shaft and when in gear and stopped the PTO will not pump.
The only Commercial Light Duty lAutomatic Transmission that offers an OEM Hot Live PTO is the FORD 6R140 & 10R140 which is standard transmission on the Ford Super Duty trucks from 2011 through current model year. The Isuzu is a better truck for getting into tight places. I’m just giving you some info on what is out there in reference to PTO’s.

On a 300k new class 8 truck. This is the sad part it is expected to have bad wheel bearing or something major. Heck my brand new Freightliner Cascadia had a critical dpf failure only at 30k on the clock. Manual regeneration failed 2x fortunately update and Manual regeneration control from the tec laptop fix it. But still this is expected in the industry. Since you have diesel with emissions. Don't idle low keep the rpm up or you will clog the dpf faster. And you can expect a regeneration if you haven't already experienced it. What's the DPF is going to be on the right side of that truck on the frame rail underneath the fwd part of your Hopper box. It might smell like something's burning because it is it's incinerating the soot around a 1000 plus degrees. There should also be a light on the dash indicating a hot exhaust. And you will notice the heat coming off from where you're standing on the side of the truck.

Damn that’s rough you have to put the truck in park, apply parking brake, and enable the PTO. I work for a city municipality and we have a Hino cab and chassis with a standard size packer/hopper. Anyways, we can compact the trash while in motion as long as you do not exceed 5-10mph. Couldn’t imagine having to compact and conduct that series of steps to compact trash.

You need to remember they are multi part vehicles ,truck from one company body and compactor from another and put together ,but for £250,000 upwards you would expect better

Better viewing video just because of no liners which would block some of the process.
In the automotive dealer warranty processes any costs you incur could be reimbursed by the authorized dealer. One validating reason is due to the feasibility of getting to the dealer or within business hours. It would be best to get pre authorization from the dealer first if the costs are substantial.

Just ‘cause you’re fine with the issues doesn’t mean it’s ok to be like that just because it’s it’s not supposed to be 100% perfect with it been hand made and not by a robot. Then if everyone else thinks that it’s like we can let the quality slip and nobody will complain. Yes it’s just a clamp but it’s there for a reason and it’s more important than you think, but you not picking up the phone and letting them know the issue, they dont know to improve the process and give a bit of training to employees to improve on quality. Even if it’s “I’m capable of fitting that myself, can you send me it” ‘cause then they know of an issue and can improve if they get told about things

I so agree about the electronic user manuals. It's a pain in the neck to have to stop what you're doing to pull one up online, or on your computer if you have to download it from a manufacturer's website. And they use the excuse "We''ve gone green!" to save themselves a few bucks. So annoying.
