A flow control should be installed so that the infeed rollers can be slowed down so the chipper can keep up.

... I stayed for the log chipping. Never seen a chipper take logs that fat!
Just a heads up, wood chip piles can get extremely hot and self combust in direct sun.
So be sure to spread piles long term
I bought a small chipper/shredder from Peavey for around $800. Being as I burn anything big enough to stack, I didn’t need a huge machine. I find the fresh branches chip better than old dry stuff but the secret is to keep your knives sharp and your revs up. Regulate the intake speed on the larger branches and don’t throw dirt into it.

James Prigioni on RUclips started his entire food forest with just wood chips. He didn't add top soil, just wood chips piled on for several years. Now he grows a ridiculous amount of fruits and vegetables in what is basically his back yard... all organic, no fertilizers, nothing.
Suggestions:
More weight on flywheel.
Feed shut off bar around the infeed shroud. Just a U shaped bar that has a lever that disengages the fwd feed if your arm/body hits it. They occasionally get hit with just the right stick and you have to reset, but it may be the difference between losing a hand/arm/life.
And maybe for fun, but maybe functional: A steam pipe "smoke" stack with a correctly sized whistle at the top. Once it produces enough steam, it sounds the whistle and you let the machine (and you) rest for a certain amount of time.

A safety shut off near the chute would be nice. There was a tragic accident in my city over the summer involving a wood chipper. Please keep your fingers away from the chute.

What about welding a stick of metal onto the lever that lifts the teeth, the strick protrudes towards the receiver, so you can lift the teeth with one hand and pull out stuck logs with the other?

Where's the emergency stop button?
I’d cut a door out of the flume thingy…with a latch so that you can gain quick access to blockages…because when the wood is moist, it’s more likely to have a build up due to the bend. Looks very satisfying though.
Needs an E-stop for the feeder.

You could use a valve to cut down on the feed drum speed. I’m sure your arborist friend mentioned that his has auto feed that stops the roller when rpm drops. I’ve run many larger industrial chippers while working for my local highway maintenance department. The scariest was one powered by a Ford 351cid V8. It had no feed drums. Straight in to the chipper wheel. Branch were whipped past the operator at incredible velocity. No way to stop the feed beyond killing the engine.

Why did you keep putting logs in that were too big? I don't understand your train of thought when it stalls and burns the belt to pieces and then just keep doing it?
Change the valve or install in inline flow control so the feed rate is adjustable. It may already be there and just limited by how you operate it. Just like a loader on a tractor you can ease the lever to slowly raise/lower.
I say relocate the startup controls closer to the engine so you can reach the compression release while cranking
Like you said at the end, adding a viscus slip clutch to the chipper cutter head so that the hydraulic pump doesn't stop when the cutter starts to slow down to far taking too big of a bite along with making sure the belts are tight enough that they done slip would go a long way to making it a more usable machine. Adding a valve on the feed motor that is controlled via engine or cutter head RPM would also help a lot in preventing a stall when the cutter head slows down. The belts may also need to be tighter or may need some dressing to prevent slipping since the belts are not a clutch and should never slip in normal operation. If the cutting head stalls the engine should stall unless a slip clutch is being used or your going to go through a lot of belts.

Slip clutch is jus gonna create another slip problem that it already has so trash that plan...
Slow the in feed by atleast half and increase knife flywheel speed "full throttle". What do you do in a car to go up a hill? Increase the throttle to maintain the cruising speed.. I wouldn't add weight to the flywheel cause if you get it outta balance I'll eat flywheel bearings like a starvin Ethiopian.. the key is feed rate

You could start by rigging up a cable or linkage to the decompression lever so you can operate it from the control panel instead of needing 2 people

@@excitedbox5705 That coolant will never go to a higher temp than the boiling point unless it all evaporates. That is why we use water in a cooling system, since as long as you can keep water in the system, your engine will not overheat and seize. The only reason you worry about it boiling off in an automobile is because the system is pressurized to around 15 PSI as the engine runs and this keeps the coolant from evaporating since it increases the temperature at where the coolant boils which gives you a wider temperature differential for the radiator to to exchange heat with the air moving past it.
Heads up ! You might want to use a larger stick to push the material , not your hand unless you don’t need it any more 🤔please be careful
Tweak suggestions:
1. Fly wheel
2. Lever for decompression.
3. Lever for hydraulic lift thingy
4. Paint the inner chute yellow and black (warning so youndon pur your hands past that point)
5. Emergency stops - multiple. One at chute end. One at far end (if you dont put the decomression lever) and one on each side.
6. A trap door to allow you to drop the dirt out the bottom.
7. Some plexiglass/perspex windows into hard to see areas from operator perspective
8. Two keys on ipposite sides to start it so that you have to have two people. Doing this alone without some more sefety features is a bit risky.
adjust your flow control for the feed motor to slow it down for the bigger stuff then you wont have to babysit the control lever. you could also add in an external flow control , that would make adjusting much faster as simple as turning a dial once you find the sweet spots mark them off for for quick reference
Swapping to a larger pully on the hydraulic pump would slow the feed rate, reducing the engine load.

Security tip when feeding wood with extruding parts ,always put them in so the attachment point angle of twighs is pointed towards the machine, people have had there hands pulled into the feeder roller because thet got stuck on twigs they put into the machines.
You should have em stop bar above the feed funnel so you can stop the thing from pulling in stuff. That machine seem to bee two man show to bee considered safe, in its current
Form.

You may be able to put a hydraulic oraface on the feed motor to slow it down a bit to allow you to feed the big stuff easier.
And you can grind up the box that it came in...winner, winner!!!!
Love you new Branch Manager. Perhaps you could add a decal identifying it as such. The lack of a sealed radiator for the cool system does not meet very safe. At a minimum you do not want to be breathing evaporated antifreeze fumes.
Rather than feeding your log feeder 12cm logs, perhaps you should limit yourself to less than 10cm timber and save the posts for your next project build.

Yes a bigger flywheel may help however you need to oversize the crank pulley as well in order to keep the same belt drive ratio... Also add an Infeed roller flow restrictor
Since the hydro controls the feed speed, but comes down on the log, if you used that arm coming up and left when looking at where you stuck the hydro motor stick, and sat a bolt on there, it would set a max depth that the grabber/feeder is placing on the wood, hence it wouldn't feed so fast.
Drill holes along the arm and stick a bolt that's long enough to go onto the back of the cowl there on the feeder section, and use that as a minimum for the logs you want to shove in diameter, then the arm can move up, but it can't move down any further than the minimum. I believe that's what they are lacking in that "design" they "liberated" from other chippers. If it can't feed as fast, you should be able to fit logs up to the max width minus grabber teeth in there and they should still go through, it's all in how it feeds.
hello 1: change the speed of the wheel feeder by adding some debit limiter on hy line or 2: you ad a speed sensor on the cheaper when the sensor detect some lower speed the little module inverse the hydraulic distributor for the wheel feeder and it stop the wheel or eject the branch, then when the speed come back it work like normaly ( expensive way to make a really wood cheapper) .
Good video Kevin! Nice wood chipper man, that will help you really get rid of branches and trees you don't need great asset man! I can see that being used a lot! The areas that you were using the chipper looked really good when you were done! Looks like you can get to areas of the chipper you need to when needing repairs, maintenance! Good video man! Should have the chipper leveled so the engine fluids aren't angled and possibly starving for oil... Also normals chippers are run full throttle while chipping

For that smaller stuff you were pushing through by hand I would highly suggest getting a dedicated pushin stick. I always have one gnarly old stick I use to keep my hands away from the finger hungry bits.
What might help things out is a 12v hydraulic pump just for the reverse feed or like you said a bigger flywheel. You explained it well but being there in person makes the difference

You might want to add a flow controller to the feed circuit. That way you can slow the feed speed on the larger stuff and not over feed the blades.

I want something such that if the wood fits in the machine, it will go through without stalling on its own. I don’t want to have to sit there rushing between the log and the controls trying to find the ‘sweet spot’ where it doesn’t stall but is still producing chips at a consistent rate.
Don’t know if anyone else has said it, but don’t put coolant in that engine, only put water. Since coolant has a higher boiling point than water, you’re effectively raising the engine operating temperature to whatever the boil point of your coolant is. Normally 260*F or more
Also that solenoid valve on the side is an auto feed stop. Should be a way to set it on that small control panel, it’ll see a drop in RPM and stop the feed roller then restart the roller.
I second the idea of a bigger flywheel.

Having used 'small' chippers like this before, you need to slow down the speed of the feed wheel some how (if its hydraulic then a flow reducer will need to be added)

It could definitely use some sort of flywheel weights for sure.... Is there a adjustment valve for your infeed speed? Ide def slow it down when sending in the bigger logs.. Maybe move or add another ignition switch close to the compression release..👍👍

It seems your new chipper isn't heavy duty enough for your larger logs.
he said it's rated for 120mm (4 1/2 inch) he was putting 6 inch logs thru it.
I know that the big chipper that the city uses has a big heavy flywheel to keep the chipper from dropping it's rpm's too quickly, helps the machine plow through bigger branches more easily.

I am always looking for a deal on stuff, but sometimes you get what you pay for. That chipper seems like a turd. For 5K and something that size I would think it should have no problems with 5 to 10 cm logs.
You could possibly do some pully diameter changes to help adjust the feed rate adjustment somewhere.

Chippers are always a bit of a learning curve. Even the very expensive ones have a bit of learning probably could do with a larger hydraulic pump and tank so you always have enough flow and pressure to keep it singing. Along

One piece of equipment that really should be operated by two people, especially with no emergency stop around the in-feed.

If the feeder had a slow slow mode, it's be much better.

The only thing better than this would be a forestry mulching head for the front of your Kubota tractor, this way you drive your chipper over the branches where they lay.
Your chipper is a 2 operator version it's made that way for safety. For example say your clothes got caught in the feeder the other operator is there to back up feeder or stop it

Maybe its the flywheel but I would try to slow down the feeder so you don't have to manually play with it on big logs.
That machine looks like it's only rated for chop sticks. If you intend on keeping that machine it may well be worth your while to have a little hunt around through some old backyard scrappy's & see if you can come across an old 3 cylinder Deutz as they don't require a water cooling system. Failing that try finding a 2 or 3 cylinder diesel yanmar, Kubota etc from an old Arc welder, golf course mower etc. if you had a decent motor on that chipper it would probably eat through everything on its diner plate. Just an idea & it would make a brilliant video or series of videos on hunting down an engine & then fitting the round peg into a square hole.
It's no Vermeer. Chinese instructions are the worst. They might as well be written in Chinese. I bought a drone once and the instructions made no sense at all. The last thing I bought had no instructions. Another thing just had a picture of the product. You'd think they could hire an English speaker to write for them.
