This video helped me in a different way actually! I could delete photos off google photos but they stayed on my device. Then it would just re-backup the photos creating an endless cycle. This video helped me find that the sync settings are within the google photos settings. I thought they would be in my phones settings. Thank you for helping me in a different way. I can finally empty my phone and get my storage back.
Mine works a bit different but the same idea. Open Google Photos, select Library, then the folder you want. Tap and hold the photo you want to delete and then use the three dots to open up the "delete from device" option. Free up only works for Photos folder, the rest you have to delete all the images in the folder where they go into a 30-day recovery bin.

I've already backed up photos on my device, but when I go to the storage settings for my Google account, if I delete files from there they are "removed from account" and basically gone forever. I know I can download them to my own computer, but I would still like lower quality versions to show up in search results.

I have the same problem. This google permission for back up is being overlooked by many who are not tech savvy! It's really annoying bec once google's storage is full, it prompts you to pay. Then your email is affected bec your storage is full! I care less with google back up as I use android & can put up to 512 gb sd card. Even when I already I turned off the sync & backup, those photos & videos already in the storage I can't delete bec it deletes the phone's copies too!

This is the issue. I want to be able to press and hold a backed up folder in Google photos, and then delete the entire folder contents from device only. If I delete from my gallery it's gone in Photos. If I delete from Photos I have to select one by one. Unnecessarily tedious.

I go and check my pics I took on a certain day and only my device has all of them What can I say? Google asks for money for the cloud space and it does not work as it should be. With other companies we call this a scam.

Disable backup and sync then try again

They should be still accessible from your phone's app and from a computer logged into Google photos. Make sure you follow the correct steps.

I'm looking to do the opposite of this. To delete from photos but keep on device.
Did not work. Delete from device is not an option on the picture any more (after I click it) but picture is still on my phone.
This only works if photos are in folders. Most Google photos are just a total accumulation, and not placed in individual folders.
