Hi, thanks for watching and interest in my video! I shook a roll of fiberglass over a dark surface. There are no fallen visible particles. Besides, the cooker hood works to suck in air and not blow it out.
@Tony Nameless And that too :) Besides, my hood is installed in the mode of air extraction to the outside, so the room air does not come back. And if the hood is installed in the filter mode (recirculation), air passes through a charcoal filter before returning to the room.
Fibreglass is an outdated material for this application , but I will say a quick and easy DIY . I will stress the safety of working with fibreglass as it is extremely painful to remove from your ears or nose once you go scratching yourself after working with it . I reccomend using latex gloves at least.Maybe you could use Oil spill kit soaker pads instead ,just a more human friendly idea.
I've been using kitchen roll the same way for years and that help to collect oil before it get to the actual filter its work for me without zny problem .
In concept a good idea however now you’re creating a serious health hazard of airborne fibreglass. If you’re hood is ductless then this is super crazy bad for you. Your sucking up fibreglass and shooting it into your home. No bueno.
Thanks so much for bringing up this point about fiberglass fibers. That fiberglass material is meant to be encased and covered with other material so it is NOT exposed to air you breath. I'll pass on this idea. I'll just clean the metal filters.
Not sure if if ill feel much safer having essentially a grease covered wick hanging up and above of my stove ranging either though. Maybe this is why most range hood companies choose metal for the filter? Just my guess anyway. 🤔
What's inside a cooker hood, grease, plastic, electric motor, electric wires. They're all dangerous to some extent. We've had ours 25 years from previous owner. Time to invest $70 at Walmart & get new design now 😀
Can’t seem to find fibreglass wallpaper also known as fibreglass wallpaper backer or fibreglass wallpaper liner anywhere. Would love to know where to start looking for this product. Thanks for you time! Great video!!
Can't recommend anything online as I bought this roll in the painting supplies department of my local hardware store. But this reinforcing product is used in various fields, not only for walls. Please see this link: www.easycomposites.eu/30g-glass-surface-tissue The fabric in the photo is very similar to my fibreglass fabric and has the same density. It's just for example.

Thanks for watching and your question! Sorry for the late response. I don't think that small fiberglass particles can come off and damage an exhaust hood. Unlike loose glass wool used for insulation, a fiberglass liner for walls is a high-density material, impregnated with a composition based on starch. I've been using these self-made filters for about two years, and I have not noticed any negative impacts during this time.
Note: Cooker chimneys comes with instructions that if filter is used the extraction rate (suction power) will be reduced. Mine has 2 charcoal filters inside which cost £16 (pair) to buy new. Your extra clean mode won't reduce/effect the suction very much 👍
I don't think so, the fabric will still remain non flammable, only the captured oil will catch fire. It would have done so even with the aluminum mesh as is common in restaurants with greasy steel filters.
The oil absorbent filter paper that is non woven fabric as written in material which we easily get online for rangehoods. Are they glass fiber as well?
Thank you for this efficient method. But I couldn't find it offline. Can you please provide any online link where I can order this non woven fiberglass fabric? Or do you know it's hindi name?
Sorry, I don't remember the brand name of the fiberglass. It wasn't a global brand anyway. I bought it in a wallpaper department of an ordinary hardware store. This non-woven fiberglass fabric is used for repairing cracks it's also strengthening and stabilizing walls and ceilings. Hope this helps.
Sorry, I didn't save the brand name. This is a roll of paperless wall repair fabric, also called fiberglass. I bought it in the wallpaper department of a local DIY store.
1. You restrict the airflow, which makes your rangehood much noisier. 2. Your new "layer" is highly inflammable DANGER and it is not properly attached (elastic bands or seam may fail - with the soaked fiberglass falling onto the hot cooktop a kitchen fire is guaranteed! 3. The fibre-glass looks just bad. Why do you not just put your mesh filter in the dishwasher more regularly, before too much grease has build up?
Yes, that was my thought also. I think putting it once a month in the dishwasher is less work than cutting it and fitting it in the 3 filters what I have. Beside that I am worried about glass fiber in the air wouldn't be healthy.
@Lien Bijs Does your aluminum mesh filter change color after washing in a dishwasher? Some of my aluminum kitchen utensils have lost their original look after being washed in a dishwasher...
Yes, from previous kitchen indeed and I knew it would happen because it was from aluminium. The manual said it was not harming only changing color. Now I have a new kitchen and the filter is from another metal and doesn't change the color. I do it every month.
Wrong on the first two accounts and regarding the third, not everyone has a dishwasher. If you have a recirculating extractor hood then you will have the odour or combined odour and grease filter behind the mesh also and it doesn't make more noise as it will act as a noise damper. These commercial filters are usually made of either combustible paper or plastic. I don't know the level of flambé that would be necessary to melt the elastic and set fire to glass but that must be a super rare event in most peoples kitchens. If you have an oil fire on your stove in a pot or pan, then you have much more serious issues than the possibility of melting elastic. Put simply sir, your assertions are ridiculous!
You could cut a slightly larger piece of the fabric and wrap the grease filter around the outside. Then sewing is unnecessary. Thank you for watching and comment!
Grease filters are made of aluminum-based alloy. Alkalis and hot water darken aluminum and break down it over time. Some brands cover filters with a special protective coating, and such filters can be washed in a dishwasher. Unfortunately, my filter isn't like that.
Now I don't sew elastic bands and just wrap the grease filter in the material. It takes 10-15 min to cut a piece of material and tuck it in the hood. And I hate to clean the darn thing 🥵🙂
7 years later, i found your video still useful. Thanks
A great video. One question: is there any danger of fibreglass particles falling into the food?

@@KoalaSewing yeah, that's not how any of this works. Good idea, but this method is a bad idea.
@@KoalaSewing ha ha ha true ! 👍
I've been using kitchen roll the same way for years and that help to collect oil before it get to the actual filter its work for me without zny problem .
Kitchen roll means kitchen paper towels? Does it filter the air using exhaust fan through that kitchen paper towel or tissues?
Please let me know thanks
@nayz hoss Your way captivates with its simplicity. I'll be sure to try it when my filter gets dirty again. Thank you!
@@KoalaSewing please make a video on that ( using kitchen roll) as well..thanks

thanks
Just use cotton fabric. It'll work as good without the risk of hazard form having fiberglass hanging above your stove range.
Not sure if if ill feel much safer having essentially a grease covered wick hanging up and above of my stove ranging either though.
Maybe this is why most range hood companies choose metal for the filter?

Amazing and brilliant, thanks!

Wouldn't small particles of fiberglass gradually denature and come off?
Thanks for watching and your question! Sorry for the late response.

By the way, yes, you are right. Thank you for this clarification!
I think with the grease/oil it absorbed its now flammable.
I suppose you're right. But I use an electric cooktop, there's no open flame.
I don't think so, the fabric will still remain non flammable, only the captured oil will catch fire. It would have done so even with the aluminum mesh as is common in restaurants with greasy steel filters.
What if you fall asleep with a pan of food cooking on the stove top , it seems to me that would escalate your problem ?
Really this is great idea found it after long time of thinking
The oil absorbent filter paper that is non woven fabric as written in material which we easily get online for rangehoods. Are they glass fiber as well?
Unfortunately, I cannot answer. I have never used filter paper.
Simply superb, excellent video. Thanks a lot.
Glad you liked it :) Thanks for watching!
Fuck yeah....this is my kind of knowledge to stop making the big companies bigger and start saving money
this is what I need, just need to lear to saw😁
What is the music you used in this excellent video?
Thank you for stopping by. This is Turn On - RW Smith 😉
Don't these paper filter u can buy come with elasticated grips?
Thank you for this efficient method. But I couldn't find it offline. Can you please provide any online link where I can order this non woven fiberglass fabric? Or do you know it's hindi name?
BRILIANT!
How to remove range hood from chimney
Is that really fiberglass or is that a non-woven plastic mesh?
This isn't a plastic mesh. The material really looks like a nonwoven fabric. But it isn't fabric in the ordinary sense.
Ingenious thanks for sharing
May I know where you got it online??
Can't answer, sorry. I didn't get it online. I bought it in a wallpaper department of a local hardware store.
Please you try kirtanas Excellent chimney cleaner
Thank you I hate cleaning my rangehood filters
Glad you found this helpful. Thanks for watching!

Watched with interest until sewing was involved....
You could cut a slightly larger piece of the fabric and wrap the grease filter around the outside. Then sewing is unnecessary. Thank you for watching and comment!
Wow brilliant but
just put grill to dishwasher...
A dishwasher is a simple and most convenient solution. But the aluminum mesh darkens in the dishwasher.
You only need to put it in the dish washer...
Grease filters are made of aluminum-based alloy. Alkalis and hot water darken aluminum and break down it over time. Some brands cover filters with a special protective coating, and such filters can be washed in a dishwasher. Unfortunately, my filter isn't like that.
Amount of time you made this filter you could easily clean the other, not to mention the small cost on buying the material...JUst clean the darn thing
Now I don't sew elastic bands and just wrap the grease filter in the material. It takes 10-15 min to cut a piece of material and tuck it in the hood. And I hate to clean the darn thing 🥵🙂
