This is THE video that made me go from absolutely dreading reverse parking to actually PREFERRING it in real life. I just passed my driving test, by the way! I learned sooo much from these Think Driving School videos. I now always look out for "Bob and Tom" haha. Brilliant!
I have been driving for nearly 4 years and absolutley terrified of reverse parking I always feel like im going to hit something, especially in my work car park as it gets so busy 😔
Passed my test in dec 2016 at 34 weeks pregnant. Didnt drive much after that. My instructors never taught me how to bay park, because the test centre that i used don't have parking bays so they just never bothered. Upon returning to work, i have been using your videos on bay parking and learnt so much.I start work at 7am,but i get there at 6 am and use your videos to practice my reverse parking. This morning i did all my reverse parking in one go, without having to do more than one correction. It really boosted my confidence. Thank you. Will be using your videos again tomorrow morning and until i feel 100% confident in reversing between two cars.
Thank you! It was always my weakest part parking like this! This video was so helpful. Because no ever told me how to do proper way. Most people would say so simple! So a big thank you! No more panic attacks 😃
THIS VIDEO HELPED ME PASS MY PRACTICAL EXAMINATION DRIVING TEST. THANK YOU THINK DRIVING SCHOOL AND GOD BLESS ALL BEGINNERS LIKE ME! YOU CAN AND WILL DO IT🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
When I began to learn how to do bay parking nearly two years ago, I searched videos of this method because most drivers used this one in my country. But then most videos taught 90 degree aka 3 line method; very few taught 45 degree method. With limited sources of this method I finally could do it and always used it. But then I thought I needed to learn 3 line method as well and began to practice it. I found that the traditional 3 line method had additional advantage, not only for parking, but also for reversing around a corner. A few months ago, I got bored in using 45 degree, especially when there was only 1 car next to my car. Besides, I just intentionally want to show people a different method they probably have never known or used before. I found the traditional 3 line method was fun to use, because it gave me more time for swinging in reverse. However, it depends on situation to determine which method I will use : - if traffic behind me is quiet, I will use the traditional method - in a busy traffic, I will use 45 degree method Imo, every driver should learn both methods so they will be prepared to deal with situations in which one method is more suitable than the other one and vice versa.
I suffered so much with the 90° method because I found it too confusing and my instructor didn't want to teach me the 45° because he said it was harder, but I found it easier. Thanks a lot for your video!! Now I easily park in reverse!!! :)
My dad tried teaching me this, by going around the car park with his arms stretched out, so I can follow. But with no reference idea of when to do maneuver or this is hopefully going to help, and hopefully, I'll soon feel confident enough to drive and park at work.
This video is excellent. Thank you for including all the reference points, wheel positions, car paths and corrections. This is the most helpful reverse bay parking video I've seen.
Watching this helped me crack this manoeuvre and go to my next driving lesson with more ease of it, I have ADHD and discalculas so I struggle a lot with directions but this finally for the process to stick in my mind
Glad it’s helping, and thank you for letting us know, it really makes it worth while us taking the time to make these when we here good things Good luck with your lessons going forward 👍
This is the best and quickest method on reverse parking and the crazy thing is before my test the instructor gave me a warm up before going to dmv then she told me "Forget the counting two spaces then reverse method and try this." I looked at her crazy and she laughed so she showed me this method and i got it first try,she laughed again and said "See?!" I then was going to ask her if she wanted to go out sometime because she was a hottie but as she took out her notebook i saw a wedding ring and was like this 🙁 but i passed my test doing this method.
This is by far the EASIEST way to do it😭 every other video i seen just said to go forward 3 lines then back in, which never worker for me. I always wondered why no one ever explained to angle your car before your back up, its easier and way faster
Omg this video is by far the most helpful! I've been doing the move forward 2 lots and reverse back method for awhile, its been working for wide open space lots only. However this method works for narrow parking lots with pillars(alot of carparks in my country is like this) which i have had difficulty parking although i have had my license for 4 years already 🤣🤣 thanks alot!!
You should give reference points to know whether we have reached 45 degree. Usually, as taught by other instructors in their videos, they use the image of lines at our chosen spot that appear in the mirror as the reference point. In practice, we often have to park between cars instead of lines, so maybe you can do a video on it. I know the concept is the same, but it can be easier or vice versa.
Very good tutorial. I wish instructors were as simple as this. They make it seem like it is a complicated maneuver 🙄 Categorizing methods such as this advance/intermediate when driving is mostly common sense and practice. Thanks for the video!
This is such a good tutorial. I'm annoyed by the number of videos that say for reverse parking you can use the "line method" for example 3 or 4 lines, etc. depending on the size of your car, but what if you have to park in the last parking bay? although you can still imagine 3 or 4 lines depending on the size of your car, what if there is a wall blocking you from doing that? i find this alot more practical
Oh, I remembered this method was actually what I learned and used to do in Japan. In these days I was practicing again but was influenced too much by driving videos from US and forgot the first slight turn before backing up, and I was wondering why my rear tires went too far away from the spot I aimed at.
It'd be really helpful if you did another video of this, with cameras on your left and right mirrors too, so we can get an idea of what it should look like from the drivers seat. The topdown view is helpful but mirror view would be really helpful! Thanks guys, loving the content
WOW! I've never heard of this method, I'll deffinetly bring it up on my next lesson. Might work out better for me this way. Also brllilliant camera shots!👌
2:12 very good stuff I like the little wheel animation and the full lock stuff amazing thanks so weird to try when I get my automatic yes. as used to drive a manual a few years ago
What's the best way to indicate whilst performing this manoeuvre? I feel like if I indicate right to get to the right then people will try to overtake me from the left, which would be dangerous if I try to swing out left. Great video by the way.
I'd been practicing this for ages and always found it more difficult than the 90 degree method despite this being more practical to use. I think my issue was I didnt swing out enough at the part were you turn 45 degrees. Now I feel confident I can nail it each time. (Not confident enough to try it near a car, but I'm sure I could if needed)
Lol! 😂 the nervous pigeon example for looking around its absolutely true! 🤔😊 That's how we all should look like when doing car manoeuvres to say the least... 😂😆
Thanks for the upload, I haven't mastered the art of parking yet, but I have to admit this video does help, the guidance with the steering helps a lot. I will give that a shot.
This is a very helpful tutorial. Great job! By the way, which is expected of us in the New DVSA Driving Test? 45 Degree or 90 Degree Reverse Bay Parking?
It's a great technique to have under one's belt. Although it's a shame that there are so many crammed car parks in the U.K where I suspect this method wouldn't be feasible.
dennydaydreamer Hi glad you like the method, most car parks I’ve ever been In to in the uk you have plenty of room for a method like this. When learning something new it’s good to have a set of guidelines to learn from. Once you pass and go away and learn more you will learn to use this method as a basis to get you into any parking space. Hope that makes sense? :)
This video is amazing. If you park too close to the spaces will it not give you a wide enough turning circle. When reversing back left I tend to go over the line and drive back straight and then steer full lock to left. Is this because I was too close to spaces to begin with?
Did you turn as soon as you reversed? I am qualified and virtually taught myself this. My instructor said she just needed to teach me to pass. I try and have a go on the quiet days in the car park. At work. I park on the 2nd floor. I remember being dead scared of going up the ramp.
Try looking all around, get your instructor stop you when you are straight and see what that looks like in different places, sometimes looking forward at that point is the best way , but remember to keep looking all around like a nervous pigeon throughout the park, hope this helps
Great video just had one question though if I need to park to my right do I need to put the indicator indicating right even if I need to move to my left before reversing or so I need to put my left indicator while moving to left and then switch it to right while I reverse
Hi, just use your indicators to best help anyone that you think it will help. As long as your signal is not Mis leading then it’s not a bad idea to use it
I love your videos, all made very simple to understand. What are you views using this 45 degrees method compare to the three line rule? This look a lot easier.
My our view is do which ever you find easiest. Sometimes the car park your parking in defines which is best, for example a small car park with 4 spaces the 3 line rule may not work. Or a car park with narrow roads between the spaces you may not have space to do the 45 degree method. So if you have a choice do the one You favour :)
Think Driving School Many thanks. Any tips on anxiety during driving test ? I failed three times in the past due to nerves, not sure what else I could do to calm myself down. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
CC L Hi check out this page on our website www.thinkdrivingschool.co.uk/learn/dealing-with-test-nerves.html See if any of that sounds like it may help :)
You should still learn the traditional 3 line rule. It has other advantages in addition to what said by the author. For example, when searching for a parking space, you find that there is an empty space behind you just missed. In your calculation, you are sure you have a plenty of time to reverse but not enough for doing initial steps needed for 45 degree method, because there are cars behind. In this situation, you are probably at the right position to do maneuver needed for the traditional 3 line rule. Other situation in which the traditional method is useful is when you have to reverse around a corner. About 1 year go I entered a wrong lane in a closed parking area, which forced me to reverse around a corner. Fortunately, because I had learnt the 3 line rule, I simply applied the method for reversing around the corner and succeeded in one attempt. Drivers in the opposite direction might be impressed by my maneuver. :)
Hoping and praying your still on here to comment back amazing video! I drive a c4 picasso would the reference point be the same as the line under the mirror or not as its a bigger car
Hi it should be fairly close, try it, if you go over the line on the left once you go in, try again and turn slightly sooner :) Let us know how it goes
I have my driving test on Monday, and I'm thinking that this is what I will fail on. Most of the time I feel like it's just luck. Do you have any advice on how I can stop overthinking it?
@ThinkDriving It's alright. The reversing maneuver I ended up doing was reversing back two car lengths alongside the kerb. I did nothing but country roads during my test but passed first time 😌 I was super happy
Could you confirm how many times we can correct ourselves. Ive been taught by my instructor the 3 line method which works fine but I feel more confident with this method as I've done previously but he states we only have 1 chance to correct ourselves which I'm not sure about, great video though!
CAVE MAN correct yourself as many times as you need but if you do it more than once it may be a problem but I have taken people to test who have done 4 shunts and still passed. But if you only do 1 shunt and your still not in your defiantly going to fail so do 2 safely and see what they say at the end :) Hope this makes sense. Good luck
Think Driving School oh that's fine then, I have no problem getting in the space just need to adjust my position sometimes so it shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for the reply!
Billium the way you turn the wheel would be the same in a rigid truck, just when you turned the wheel may be different you will need to experiment in an empty car park. If the truck was to big tho it would not fit in a space :)
That’s just the angle from the drone, it doesn’t go over the space, but when you are doing it and there is no car there it’s ok too, if there is a car there just pull forward and then back again. Hope this helps :)
My instructor told me this method wasnt allowed for the test, but i always park this way in my own car and prefer it over the 90 degree method. So is my instructor wrong, can i use the 45 degree method on the driving test? Test in one week and thinking of just doing this method to see what happens.
OfficialJDCE you can do either method on test, the 90 degree one tends to be the one most learn because it’s simpler. But if you feel happier doing the 45 that’s fine to and you should do what you feel is best for you. Good luck and let us know how you get on :)
hi can you teach reverse parking like thart using that car, small car hatchback...without moving away like 45 degree? i mean..once you are perpendicular to the open spot.full reverse turn. this is for narrow parking area. pls thanks
My method is i use bay im level with as number 4 then 3 then 2 then 1 then is i go into i do half of turn right straight away then as i see chosen bay 4 i do full lock right just before i get close i let it curve a bit then do full lock right then to finish i straighten if its wonky left i go right or wonky right i go to left theres different ways i do whats easier i dont like it and forward one i use bay 3 with my shoulder then 2 then 1 i go into then quater of turn right then full lock right to straighten.
This is the best video ive seen on bay parking quick simple and informative why didnt my instructor teach me this easy two step manoeuvre so gutted.

If you are further away it’s helps to stop you cutting the corner, but if the space is empty next to yours it’s ok to go in it a little bit

I'm looking for this, thanks!
Glad it helping
Its so much easier to bay park using this method. I always 45 degree park
Everyone is different, do what ever is best for you, as long as you are safe does not matter which method you use :))
When you can park its always lot safer and easier to do it I always bay park
Revising is always a good idea for many reasons 👍
Best way they taught
Great technique. Cheers mate!!!
Glad it’s helping :)
Great video! Thank you.
Is there a video in your channel showing how to bay park between two other cars?
Alireza Sadreddin this method will work for that just keep an eye out for them and adjust if you get to close to them :)
Alireza Sadreddin also watch this video it may be helpful :)

nice video mate.
Glad you enjoyed it
the nervous pigeon got me clicking the like button :D
Good good :)
I have my driving test on Monday, and I'm thinking that this is what I will fail on. Most of the time I feel like it's just luck. Do you have any advice on how I can stop overthinking it?
Sorry for the slow reply, how did you get on?
@ThinkDriving It's alright. The reversing maneuver I ended up doing was reversing back two car lengths alongside the kerb. I did nothing but country roads during my test but passed first time 😌 I was super happy
@@meganbriony2904 good job, take it easy out there on your own :)
@@ThinkDriving Thank you, I will. My overprotective parents and chaotic little sister are counting on it 😅
This is much easier than reversing into the space in one go! Is this fine to do in my test?
Yes 100% glad it’s helping :)
@@ThinkDriving Thanks for the swift reply! My test is on Thursday and I was really worried about my manoeuvres but your videos are extremely helpful!
Swayer good luck, let us know how it goes :)
@@ThinkDriving Passed my driving test today! Thanks a lot for the videos, they really helped! :D
Swayer good work, take it easy out there on your own :)
This is so good!thank you for this video👌👌👌
Could you confirm how many times we can correct ourselves. Ive been taught by my instructor the 3 line method which works fine but I feel more confident with this method as I've done previously but he states we only have 1 chance to correct ourselves which I'm not sure about, great video though!
CAVE MAN correct yourself as many times as you need but if you do it more than once it may be a problem but I have taken people to test who have done 4 shunts and still passed.
But if you only do 1 shunt and your still not in your defiantly going to fail so do 2 safely and see what they say at the end :)
Hope this makes sense. Good luck
Think Driving School oh that's fine then, I have no problem getting in the space just need to adjust my position sometimes so it shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for the reply!
CAVE MAN no worries, good luck 👍
Mirrors between the bay works for me
Good, it is different for everyone :)
So well explained. Thank yoy
excellent video tutorials.
Glad it’s helping you 👍
Now to go practice!!!
How did the practice go?
@@ThinkDriving found a quiet car park...nope still people watching in a parked car... nothing worse!!! I will do it at some point and let you know
very good technique!
Thanks glad you like it :)
Millions thanks.
Glad it’s helping :)
do these same rules apply to a larger vehicle like a truck or is it different?
Billium the way you turn the wheel would be the same in a rigid truck, just when you turned the wheel may be different you will need to experiment in an empty car park. If the truck was to big tho it would not fit in a space :)
ok thank you
Thanks for the explanation but I saw you going to the other parking space, what if other cars are already parked in their?
That’s just the angle from the drone, it doesn’t go over the space, but when you are doing it and there is no car there it’s ok too, if there is a car there just pull forward and then back again. Hope this helps :)
Great example
Glad it’s helping you
Nice video
Thanks
Excellent presentation!
Daniella Bronowski thank you, glad you liked it :)
This is practically the same as the 3 point turn only easier, as its only half the manouver
GoodAdvicesForFranco all skills are transferable :)
Good luck and let us know how you get on :)
i like look around "like a nervous pigeon" loool
Thanks I really learned
Glad it has helped :) Let us know how you get on with your test, If you have any questions please do ask
Awesome video
On 1:41, can i steer it full left lock in advance before moving the car or do i have to steer it as im moving?
Its much better for your car and tyres to do it while moving
Love this video.
Glad you liked it :) Let us know how your test goes
hi can you teach reverse parking like thart using that car, small car hatchback...without moving away like 45 degree? i mean..once you are perpendicular to the open spot.full reverse turn. this is for narrow parking area. pls thanks
I will try
My method is i use bay im level with as number 4 then 3 then 2 then 1 then is i go into i do half of turn right straight away then as i see chosen bay 4 i do full lock right just before i get close i let it curve a bit then do full lock right then to finish i straighten if its wonky left i go right or wonky right i go to left theres different ways i do whats easier i dont like it and forward one i use bay 3 with my shoulder then 2 then 1 i go into then quater of turn right then full lock right to straighten.
Can I use this in my driving test
Yes, you can do any method, as long as you do it safely 👍👍
