Exploring Topographic Features at Zoar Valley // Land Navigation Part 2
In Part 1 of our Land Navigation series, we covered several topographic features on a map including hills, cliffs, spurs, and valleys. In this video, we are at the wild and rugged Zoar Valley to explore all of the features. Zoar Valley is a great place to show examples of topographic features because it is rich in geological features.

You asked to comment on your camera: Ok - you could use any camera and still have an excellent presentation - it's about your organization, pace, and teaching style that sets this apart from many others. Well done.

Thank you! I agree, but a good camera looks more professional. I am really happy with the GoPro Hero 8 for on the trail and have since switched to the Sony ZV-1 for my instructional videos. The ZV-1 is much easier to make sure the frame is correct. I have also upgraded my audio setup, which is more important than the camera. Thanks for watching and the comment.

Great video, lots of good information. "The Pyramid" is my favorite spot in Zoar Valley as well!
It's my favorite spot when the steelhead aren't running anyway haha

Thank you! I have taught the features in a classroom, but it is not until you see them in real life that you can put 2 and 2 together. Thanks for watching!

Zoar Valley is an amazing place. It is so rich in topographic features, it was a natural location for this video. Print out a USGS map and go explore. Try to match up the contour lines on the map with what you see.

Great series...very well put together! When exploring around your topography I find very helpful remembering that every feature: spurs, draws, valleys, rivers, cliffs and even slopes have both...

Top notch explanation, by far the best on YT. Keep these hiking trips coming, mate. Your knowledge of Topo map reading is just brilliant. I am hoping to get somewhere close to your knowledge by going out in my familiar area and see if I can match what I see. Any tips on what look for first? I am very familiar with my hilly open fields as I cycle through them a lot. My fear is that once I open the map I am going to be overwhelmed by the data and lines :-)

Thanks so much, have a look at the other videos in my series. The first thing I look for are the valleys or draws. You can learn a great deal about the terrain on how water travels.
