As much as there may be disagreements about Scar killing Nina, it was an act of kindness. She would have been used as a labrat for the rest of her life, and it would be a horrible fate. A sad but powerful moment.

to be honest this didn't get to me at all since im someone who watched anime like monster, berserk and when the cicadas cry before watching this, i think shock factor and the dark aspects come from the fact its a kid and its done by the father, there's shit in anime out there that psychically can make you ill, one that had a huge impact on me was (SPOILERS) in fate/zero when a charecter shoots his daughter in front of the wife and then strangles his wife while she curses him and even thats tamed compared to things that appear in anime like berserk like i said earlier, though i think this would defiantly make someone not that into anime or just the darker side of anime pause and think holy shit that's fucked up.
well if you watched it as a kid, it'll traumatize you. that's why a lot of adults now consider this scene as the darkest moment in anime. animes back then doesn't hold back when it comes to attacking these kind of topics. unlike today, people only consider the darkest moment as people killing other people and the gores.
