Do bats (esp. in the Calif Sierras) prefer or are adverse to burn't wood? Possibly more nutrients available? I'm hoping to procure some Jeffery Pine siding to make a few bat houses. Attached to my house (at 4200' High Sierra Desert) the bats will have a warm place in the winter. Great video, thanks!
Great question. Our guess is that the burnt wood would contain carcinogens, which would not be healthy for the bats if they will even come near it due to the smell it may have. If you are interested in building your own bat house, check out Merlin Tuttle's Bat House Guide (linked in our shop at batbnb.com).
Hi y'all great video. I am located in Northern Kentucky. I was wondering what is the best size gap between the baffles of the roost for the big brown bats. Three quarters of an inch or bump it up to an inch?? Oh and I can confirm a maternity colony near me. Well I always see them around a few houses down. Noticing the group getting bigger and seeing new pups on the wing.😊
That's so exciting that you have a maternity colony nearby! 3/4 of an inch is great, any bigger than that and other critters will be able to get in besides the bats.
@@BatBnB Yes very hopeful that they decide to move into the future bat house and thank you. But big brown bats will happily live in three quarters of an inch gaps. It's amazing that a bat with their body size can squeeze into and be comfortable in that tight of a space.

Thank you, that's so kind of you to say.
