Fascinating! God's creatures!
I have a female pallid bat living in my attic. Just one bat . She keeps all the scorpions from getting into my home. I am very grateful . She doesn't bother anyone and is actually quite friendly!!! I do not feed her or handle her. I live in the middle of the Mohave desert. She has been living in my attic for about a year now. I love watching her hunt some of the scorpions etc. She stays out of my living area. She is very sweet ❤
what a thoughtful neighbor she is!

A fat bat almost landed on my hat hi my name is Aaron Durr Burger 😊
Hello Aaron! Bats will swoop down towards us humans, but they are only after the bugs that are around us outside.
Any info on southern Baja? It’s extreme varied temperatures here. Summer is brutal.. any advice greatly appreciated!🙏🏽😇
We have a blog about bat houses in warmer climates: batbnb.com/blogs/blog/keeping-your-bat-house-cool-in-warmer-climates
Well communicated!! I hope they become trendy and everyone gets one lol
Thank you! They are already pretty trendy, and hopefully will continue to grow in popularity.
Good information. One question?? Why do the commercially purchased bat houses have to b so darn expensive??
You really get what you pay for with bat houses. Ours are the highest quality on the market. They are made with the best materials to help them last as long as possible. They were also designed with the bat's needs in mind, and we worked closely with Dr. Merlin Tuttle on the design and he has over 40 years of experience studying bat houses. We also provide education and help with placement options.
You're all into attracting bats until you find one in your bedroom. I'm sorry but it's survival at that point.
I heard it takes up to 2 yrs for bats to find the bat house and sometimes they don't find them so there more for decoration ?
How big should the entry area be?
lol... dust?? dang bats in the barn poopin sticky bat poo, sticks to everything, 😅friends come over snd go crazy over the stuff, they scrape the boards that i put over everything😅i sshould go in the bat poo business
Why don't the bats eat the wadp?
Thank you for adding this!
I am sixs blocks from a river and 8 city blocks from 4 lakes. there is a colony in the attic . I keep bee's , I feed birds and have a running bird foutain. I am placing a large bat box on the second story south side of my home.
Excellent! Best of luck!
Thank you , the house we bought has a bat coloney in the attic, I bought a large bat box . I don't want to oust these bats but I want to redirect them and give them a better option. I love bats they eat they're weight in bugs every night ....a large amount of those bugs are mosqito's. I have always lived with bats around I love them.
thanks for caring about the bats! Bat houses are a great way to redirect the bats.
Did it work?
Dear God! These are over $200!!!?!? Why?? It’s a wooden box!! That’s crazy man, my $30 one from Amazon has served me well for years now. Wow.
Got that bloody right mate, they're ripping people!
Actually, no. It’s not just a wooden box. It is a design optimized for the survival of and attraction of bats.

Guano is a chief resource of the Wachati.
Is there a healthy or unhealthy population level for Bats? Can I attract enough Bats to be harmful to other animals that rely on Insects?
Great video. I was asked to make a few bat houses for a friend and was curious about style and sizing. I also liked your cleat mounting system.... nice idea.
My mom sent me this
If your a farmer you deal either all kinda of poop 💩 NO BIG DEAL
So true! This is oftentimes the biggest concern people have, not realizing that they are surrounded by wild animal poop outside.
Just read his book ❤

Can bats be moved? Can I call a pest control company and ask them if I can get the bats during a removal? I want to line the entire eaves of my barn , all around the entire building, with built in bat houses.
You'll have to contact bat removal professionals. You can always reach out to local wildlife biologists to see who they recommend. You want to make sure the bats will not be harmed. You can then line the eaves. Putting up a bat house before the bats are removed and the eaves are lined, will give the bats somewhere else to go.
Thank you for this. It was very informative. I'm starting in beekeeping, and the wax moths and hive beetles that can infest bee hives are nocturanl flying insects that can cause issues for the bees. There really isnt a whole lot of options for controlling them effectively, that won't cause some degree of harm or issue for the bees themselves. Most forms of control are things like oil traps, swiffer sheets, mint candies, etc. All reactive measures rather than proactive measures to prevent them from growing to the point of becoming a problem, or to reduce the numbers before they gain entrance. A strong colony can manage them on their own, but a weaker or newer colony, or a colony with a heavy infestation, are typically at the greatest risk of being wiped out. I'm rather surprised that I wasnt able to find any information/study on the potential symbiotic relationship between bees and bats. Bats are a flying, forest dwelling isectivorous mammal. While bees are a diurnal forest dwelling insect that suffers from insects that are nocturnal. Both are social creatures that seem to prefer a small colony, in most cases; as opposed to a solitary lifestyle with only 1 bat per nest site. And their habitat preferences are almost identical in the various ecosystems they inhabit. Over the years I've noticed a reduction in bat populations, or at least how often I'm able to see any. And can't help but wonder if the prevalence of 4G, 5G, WiFi, cell towers and other forms of UHF/VHF radio frequencies and forms of EMF might be having an effect on both populations of bees and bats. Or if it's more a case of habitat loss (less wildflowers/"weeds" and more HOA picture perfect lawns), insecticides, herbicides, pesticides, etc. A reduction in conducive habitats and diversity in plant life, which reduces diversity in insect life, can have a "trickle UP effect that impacts the density and diversity of larger species on up the food chain. In any regard... getting into beekeeping; I'm interested in possibly improving the ecosystem in other ways. Such as measures to foster native bees and butterflies, hornets/wasps, birds, owels, etc So I've been considering making bat boxes out of pallets to put up. My question being... would thicker outter walls, such as 2 or 4 inch, be better or worse? seeing that it acts as an insulator and heat sink, to provide more stable temperatures, would hold in the bats body heat, absorb more heat during the day, radiate or help stablize night time and winter temperatures, etc. My limited understanding would be that the better insulation and ability for it to act as a heat sink would be better. But it may have an opposite effect; if the batts body heat wouldn't be enough to heat the space.
I live next to the ocean. So I have a constant breeze. I also have many street lights. Do bats like the ocean?
Bats are found all up and down coasts, absolutely! If there are bugs, there are probably bats. There have even been bats found miles offshore.
Bats don’t like cedar smell ?
They have no problem with cedar, especially when it's been dried out. Cedarwood essential oil has a more concentrated smell, so that's why some people think that cedar is a problem when it is actually one of the more successful woods for a bat house.
cheers for your work :)
How about viral diseases? Isn’t guano how COVID-19 finally spread to humans? What are the risks of viral diseases that can be spread to humans in gardening with guano based fertilizer?

Anyone who thinks bats should be protected has never had bats in their house.
That is definitely not a fun experience, but we are encouraging the protection of bats in the wild because they do serve a very important purpose. We are sorry to hear that you had a negative experience with them. We hope that can change for you.
My sympathies. But your comment makes me wonder why humans are protected.
It's a wild animal. You should expect nothing less. In the meantime, maybe educate yourself on the important role they play in our ecosystem.
I used to enjoy watching the bat fly around my house. He’d go out at night and come back in the morning

How well do these work in the North East? We have mid and often harsh winters
In the Northeast, bats will use bat houses as a summer home and will go elsewhere for the winter. You can choose to bring the bat house down during the winter if you want, or they can stay up. Bat houses can definitely be successful in the Northeast!
In Australia there is danger of alyssa virus (a relative of rabies), and horses are at risk of contracting Hendra virus from bats, so it would pay to be careful around bats, particularly in the Northern states of Australia
We should always be careful around wild animals, that is very true, but carefully coexisting.
👍👍👋
We generally hit rock within inches of starting to dig. Any recommendations other than mounting it on a building instead?
You could use a tree, but you want to make sure the nearest branches are 10-15 feet away from the bat house.

Cool 🦇
Do bats (esp. in the Calif Sierras) prefer or are adverse to burn't wood? Possibly more nutrients available? I'm hoping to procure some Jeffery Pine siding to make a few bat houses. Attached to my house (at 4200' High Sierra Desert) the bats will have a warm place in the winter. Great video, thanks!
Great question. Our guess is that the burnt wood would contain carcinogens, which would not be healthy for the bats if they will even come near it due to the smell it may have. If you are interested in building your own bat house, check out Merlin Tuttle's Bat House Guide (linked in our shop at batbnb.com).
Here in Iowa I have a 55 ft tall concrete silo on my farm property, this silo has the rebar hopps that surround the silo I've installed two bat houses last week...
Also this silo has, a vine that is growing around it about 40 percent covered.
That's great! Good luck with the bat houses, let us know how it goes.
I have an old wooden shed.Inside is stacked a 4 ft x 8 ft x 4 ft stack of old ruff cut lumber covered with an old tarp. It is home to hundreds of bats.
Wow! Well if you ever need to move the lumber, definitely check into a bat house for the current residents 😉
I plan to put a bat house over my compost pile. Shouldn't be any worry of pathogens, and my garden will love it.
That's a great idea!
How much of a risk is a woodpecker bothering a bat house? Is the prevention something recommended to do from the start if you have woodpeckers visit your yard or only if they start to cause a problem? Will they go for a bat house over nearby trees?
Go ahead and wait to see if there is a problem. Having woodpeckers around doesn't mean that they will bother the bat house. If you see one checking it out, then it may come back.

I see the one painted like an American flag. Doesn't the bat house need to be painted dark? Is natural wood color dark enough? Just learning about it here...
Great question. The color recommendations are based on the climate of the region and how much sunlight the bat house is going to get, but ultimately it is up to you. We give tips on what would give you the best chances of success. Check out our painting guide for more info: batbnb.com/pages/painting-guide
