Very lucky finding your video. I’m looking to add roosting boxes to my property. This is far northern Wisconsin, Iron County. The population of Small Brown Bats have been decimated by White-nose syndrome. The resultant insect population responded. Thanks for the primer!
Thank you for this video! I've been wanting to put up a bat house (or two) at my new home. This video answered the open questions I had before starting to build.
Thanks for the awesome presentation, ladies. We are into Aquaponics (which is a chemical free natural food production system) here in South Africa, and have been encouraging insectivorous bats around our systems for the past 6 years to great effect. They are our best friends 😊
Thank you from ~ 1 hour north of Tampa Bay . I have a nice piece of property & just ordered a up to 200 brown bat house made of cedar . I'm excited to hang it up SE facing & appreciate the information.
This presentation gives me hope. My large house is home to about 30 bats that live under the eaves of our roof. We're replacing the siding on our house at the end of September and I'm afraid their homes will be destroyed. I want to build a half-dozen bat houses that I can place under the eaves in similar locations (some on sunny side, some on shady side). None of their current homes are 16" tall, more like 8" or so under the current trim boards below the eaves. I think I'll try bat houses on the gable sides that are parallelogram to match the pitch of the roof and blend in with the new lap siding. The also enjoy the tops of the cornerboards, so I'll fashion something to wrap those with a bat house. Wish me luck.
I live on a live water creek in Central TX. I put a bat house up at the end of 2018. It's near the water, high, and not too close to trees. While I've seen bats flying around here and there (which was occurring prior to the installation of the bat house), we haven't had any take up residence in the house yet.
Hi, Thank you for the great informative video! Is it safe for the bats if I build a bat house out of pvc/vinyl material trim boards instead of natural wood?
How many bathhouses per acre?I have bats on my farm, but would like to see more. How many houses per acre would be normal? I have an average of 1 owl house per 3 acres, mixed oak/pine wild parts of farm.
I live about 100m from a river on the 12th floor with an unobstructed view, will bats find a home on my balcony? I see them flying around but I am not sure they go this high, as my apartment is higher than all the trees around.
10 ft is fine. Have you priced a 12-20’ pole? They are very expensive. A 2” EMT CONDUIT pipe at Home Depot is currently $42.75 for a very strong 10’ pole. You can also get a 4x4 12’ pressure treated for rocket house or mounting a regular bat house but again you need at least two feet of that to embed in concrete. Bats are expert fliers. They swoop down inches above the lake to snag insects.
Uh? They're literally stating a very simple fact about what bats eat. You think they'll have different diet sensibilities if they live somewhere else😂? Not to be rude, but I don't think nature is for you if you're only interested in the cute and fluffy parts about it.. especially something as serious as aiding in species conservation. Bats eat bugs. They are a vital part of the ecosystem: one that is IN DANGER right now. I want you to put on your thinking cap and reaaaallllly try and think about what will happen if all the bats die out, lol.
I'm just now getting into bat houses around my house. This is useful.

I had signed up for this presentation scheduled for 2/8 but had to miss it. Thanks so much for pointing me to this RUclips video. It was wonderful.
You are so welcome!

Going to a bat box get together at my local nature sanctuary in middle TN. Very glad to have this info before I get my bat box!
I'm also living in middle TN, Dickson county. Where can I find a bat sanctuary? 🦇 #batlover #naturelover

What a super informative video. Thank you so much for putting this together and helping bats survive in this hard world❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@BatConservation very much so.
Thank you!
I’m not repainting or recaulking them, that’s ridiculous. 😂 Good info thanks!
GREAT video ladies!!! Is there a link to bathouse building plans?
link in description now works!
Boom!!!
What about using a light to bring in insects for the bats?

Temperature may be too hot or cold, cavities may be too wide, possible wasps using it filling with mud
But it may be perfect too ...just have to be patient... best of luck hope you have tenants soon
One of the largest colonies I have seen personally was under a train overpass. My idea on temperature would be to think about cave temperatures.

This was Batastic!
What are the average temperatures inside bat houses they prefer? Let's say for the colorado area or close by.

You could just increase the size of the bat house rather than the quantity
Ie adding more layers/chambers

It depends on the bats, they likely fly that high.
Link to handbook doesn't work
updated!
Are there fungal medicines? White nose is awful and It breaks my heart. What do we do? We need our bats every bit as bad as our bees!

We are working on it! www.batcon.org/our-work/research-and-scalable-solutions/white-nose-syndrome/

Not supposed to use treated wood for the rocket style where the bats will be in contact with the wood
lets not recommend killing pollinators to help other pollinators!!
