We gain power by admitting we are powerless. It’s ok to ask for help.

I was told that in step one, the lowercase P in power means without God

I did step one the morning of 11/13/17 when I finally admitted I was powerless over alcohol, that my life was unmanageable. Have done Step 1 many times with sponsors and step study. It is a lot to admit and surrender to.

I am 60 y/o. Here's the two best pieces of advice I can offer the younger generation. First, fund your 401k like it's your job, stick the entire thing into an S&P500 index fund. Second, don't touch alcohol. Not one drop. The interpersonal damage is relentless, and horrifying.

Small correction. The 12x12 was not written to clarify the language of the big book. It was written because the fellowhip was in trouble, and Bill knew he needed to put the traditions in place to save it. Bill instinctively knew that lazy alcoholics would likely not read the traditions, so he wrote "essays" about the steps to accompany them. This worked and the 12x12 became popular which saved AA. Please note: The exact instructions for the steps are in pages 1-164 in the big book. The 12x12 is a lovely "add on"

Wonderful, clear explanation!! I’m sober 52 days. Been in and it of this since I was 15!! (53 now!) I finally realize it is my thinking, (I have the hardest head in the world!!! Lol 😂) and allergy towards alcohol. Yup…huge ego that has finally been popped!!! And self centered… completely. Thank God I can let this all go, and be free. Thank you for your great video! God Bless ❤

My life has been completely unmanageable for many years. I refer to it as slow-drip suicide. The thing is, my problem isn't with alcohol or drugs or gambling or sex. I soothe stress with immersing myself mindless internet surfing and scoffing down sugar and carbs. I also buy tons of shit i don't need so I'm drowning in so much shit that nothing is of much value. It probably sounds ridiculous compared to alcohol, but the problems have been racking up. Health issues, isolation, loneliness. I've been running from something for my whole life. My fear is I'll never find out what it is.

I'm sorry to hear of your suffering. What you are experiencing relative to the internet, is called a process addiction. I believe there are therapists who specialize in internet and other process addictions.

If your Step One is but NOT perfect stay on it until it's TRULY PERFECT. You need a sponsor who has been through the steps to do that btw

If, when you honestly want to, you find you cannot quit entirely, or if when drinking, you have little control over the amount you take, you are probably alcoholic. If that be the case, you may be suffering from an illness which only a spiritual experience will conquer. Or you may not. Here, there is no specific diagnosis of any individual reader.

Not every planted seed is fruitful, but if this plants one in your mind that grows, you'll find at some time, that the feeling you have now will disappear. A feeling that nurtures growth is not a guilty pleasure❤

"Step 1 is NOT something we do, it's something that "happens" to us. If we're lucky, we arrive at a moment in our lives where we have reached the end of our endurance, mentally, physically, and emotionally! Only then do we become willing to "live differently".
That is not a guarantee of sobriety, it only means that we now stand at the turning point. If we do not concede to our innermost selves at that moment, we're PHUCKED!
Many groups offer 1st Step meetings to newcomers, but if the "surrender" has not happened, going to 137 more 1st Step meetings won't help if we haven't had our asses thoroughly beaten to a pulp! It's NOT an intellectual event, it's INTERNAL.
My mantra is "Live in the problem, or live in the solution". "Go to meetings, clean house, and help others". Sobriety is as simple as that!
