- In 1964 Granada Television filmed appearances by Muddy Waters, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Cousin Joe Pleasant, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee at a disused railway station in Manchester England. One of the most brilliant events ever conceived.

I saw a few of these blues greats in 69 as a youth. Got to meet Sister Rosetta, Champion Jack Dupree, Shakey Walter Hopkins, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGee and few others. Got my program autografted. Lost it down the years but I got some memories still. Love to all that appreciate this wonderful music.xx
Happy to say , I was there on the day sat next to the camera pointing across the line at Sister Rosetta etc.. 18 years old and very to be there . P.S. Goats are not indigenous to Chorlton - Cum - Hardy ( the area the station is in ).
Oh you lucky bugga I hate you ;) :) :)
Saw them bout 5 years later at Free Trade Hall. The gig was hot! Still gives me a buzz after 50 odd years.
Almost could be the origin of the Flashmob performances. Manchester was a big centre for Jazz and folk music in 1965, especially the long gone MSG club in central Manchester. A truly historic musical event that we are so lucky to be able to watch.
The Dad of an old friend of mine got me into the soul of Sister Rosetta Tharpe but this show is just amazing and beyond.
Thanks for posting this gem.
Remember taping this by holding mike to the speaker on a Bush tv. Played many times but returned after uni. to find reel had congealed. Still great memories of some true blues greats..
RUclips is a wonderful resource for giving us back things we thought we'd lost foerever, isn't it!
Superbe ambiance. Talent sans artifice.
D'accord 😊🌼
What a performance! Had I been there I would have started clapping at the sound of the first note and not stopped until the last note died out.
Great Live Outdoor Show!
I Bow to the Tec. Crew that Had to Plan Setup and Record that Show!
just unbelievable or so ... even billy the goat has the blues.
Classic performances all round, but Cousin Joe really steals the show!

What a brilliant idea, glorious, well done Granada TV! This music was all new to millions of young British people and we thought it was fantastic, though we´d only ever heard the artists on record, never seen them on tv. I didn´t go to this event, but wish I´d been able to, never knew it was going to happen. I did see one blues concert at the Victoria Palace in London the same year 1964 with lots of black American singers and musicians, but can´t remember who, was Muddy Waters there? The audience in Manchester looks like
middle-class students, the audience in London was more mixed. But only 6,000 odd views here, that´s sad.
HERRLICH Musik Geschichte.Absolut ein Zeit Dokument.GORGEOUS music history. Absolutely a period document.
The youngest of those young Brits would be in their late 70s now, if they are still alive.
Yes. I am 74 and was doing O levels in sunny Blackpool.that year.
yes i was there in chorlton that night i'm75 now.
It's funny how watching videos of the Confederate States of America led me to this video, which I was looking for about 4 years without success... and now RUclips just suggested it to me.
To whoever posted this footage you are my hero
Great upload, thanks!!
Brilliant
Cool idea for doing shows
The goat is kind of enjoying the concert.
Took 14 years to get Rosetta in the R&R Hall of Fame! Shame on them!
Este vídeo es excelente, pero podrían remasterizar el audio.

Two things. I saw this show on tv in England. Second, who is the piano player. I see Champion Jack Dupree on the billing. Was it him?
where are sister rosetta's mike and amp?
Maybe her voice and electric guitar were so loud she didn't need one?
@@radicalcartoons2766 electric guitar without amp unlikely to be loud!
Late to the party but what a show 17:05 you can see a lead running from under her coat
@@ianhilton6015 I can't. Nor can I see it when she picks up her guitar or her plugging anything in, nor it coming out of the guitar at in the close-up 14.41. I have 2 SGs - one with front jack and one with side jack. I can't see her amp either. I'm baffled.
Sister Rosetta was rock'n roll before rock'n roll...Did you know a "special" minibus came from London with Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and probably others just for them to see the show?
I actually remember seeing this program when it was broadcast in 1964, I believe as part of Scene at 6.30 which was then the daily evening weekday news program on Granada television. This station reached all the way to the east coast of England on the old 405-line analogue system. Although I was only 12 years old at the time the music had a profound effect on me as I had never heard anything like it before. Needless to say the adults in the family at the time dismissed it as rubbish which was normal then when people in a small-minded backwater were confronted with anything other than what they already new.
Priceless stuff 👍👍👍
Great concert! Thank you for posting this. (not sure it's necessary to upres VHS to 1080 tho....)
ABSOLOUTLEY AMAZING!
🙏💜🌍💜🙏
i used to rig my amp up to my video player quite a few years back lol still sounded good.i reaally wanted a vinyl conversion sadly loads of live shows have only been available digitally..im a believer in analogue tech its vastly sonically superior & the only way to be true to musical history.ive got thousands of rare records on my music playlists i add to these lists weekly.most of the music is unknown to the masses & on small independent labels.i cover the 50s 60s & early 70s soul, funk, jazz funk fusion, blues 60s garage .im living not that far from where this gig was filmed.i think it was aired by granada tv on british tv showing many a taste of the real blues for the.first time so a great & vital post i just subscribed peace...

it's Sale Station - i tell you dressed up as Chorltonville
No it's Chorlton. Now a tram station...
Cousin Joe is just WOW!
Muddy Walters, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, but it is Cousin Joe Pleasant who steals the show.
This is amazing! I love it! Makes me wanna play
Hard to believe that something as fantastic as this has never received an official DVD release
Yep - The Muddy Waters & Sister Rosetta were complied on The American Folk Blues Festival - The British Tours 1963-1966 (The American Folk Blues Festival - The British Tours 1963-1966 (Reelin' In The Years Productions, Llc 2007) but that's about it :(
