Medina won this heat
No he did not😂
He did get the biggest spray on his head though
Not according to those with more experience than you.
@@hommuside you’re so naive and clearly know nothing about surfing. Watch the heat again
That’s It
Yeah but wsl want an American or Austrálian Champion this year
Seriously people. I’m not biased at all. European. There’s something really weird going on here.
I'm an Aussie and agree. They milk every point out of the smoothness of Ethan which could be fair. But then there is nothing for gabby's smoothness. If anything they seem to have docked points from him somewhere especially on the first few waves. They only common dominator is giving buzzer beaters, which is a really bad precedent to falsely give buzzer beaters... this is leading the sport down a really stupid road.
Seems crazy but I feel like they want a controversy. Why else would they interview him and have the camera follow him down the trail. Usually the focus is interviewing the winner.
Guess the only thing is are Cole's hits bigger than Gabe's, to justify the slight point difference? If you watch Cole's waves a few times he really is hitting the pocket almost flawlessly and throwing buckets, where Gabe's turns often aren't as full, even though his style is seamless. Even if Cole matches Gabe's score here he still wins, not as much in it as everyone seems to think.
@@petecabrina Bro, that last wave being the highiest wave of the heat and almost a high score makes absolute no sense.
Cole had more aggressively committed turns.
Kelly. Please set up a rival tour! 99% of us would follow over this stale muck.
Kelly? Really!?!? He owns WSL… he’s part of it…
Slaters part of the problem
When Kelly is done, wsl is done. I love the sport, but when Kelly is out of a contest, what happens to viewers? Gone. The evolution of spinny airs destroys every sport. Vert skating, pipe snowboarding, rollerblading, and now surfing. Kelly could create a legends tour, and I believe that it would quadruple viewers. Total respect to all the talented surfers, those spinners are the hardest thing in sports possible, we just aren't into it. Law of diminished effects.
@@sk8ncre8 what “we” are you talking about? Absolute nonsense.
"I made the mistake??"....best line of the Season.
Hahaha so true. How clueless is he that he doesn't realize he made a mistake? Unless he didn't understand what Laura meant?

Insanely tragic judging. Wtf
why?
@@travelfootiekie hahahahaha

It's becoming painfully obvious how much they're stacking the odds against Brazilian surfers.
What is the benefit of stacking odds against Brazilians? A huge part of the WSL is Brazilian , so much so they have their own live feed. If anything i would argue it's more in their interest to have Brazilian surfers in the top 5 because it means more views for them.
The victim card doesn’t wash. Accept the result and move on.
@@bcooper7618 a huge part of the WSL is Brazilian because the last world champions were Brazilians, they think if they can improve the American part of the WSL they can increase the value of the WSL to sell it.
@@bluesoul4093 clutching at straws
@@bcooper7618 The biggest issue here is currency, one Brazilian viewer isn’t worth a third of an Australian one or a fith of an American. If Brazilian surfers keep dominating the tour as they have the tournament becomes less entertaining for these audiences
Terrible judging. Should have been a 6.5 max
5.0 max
Agree
medina's wave was a 5 tops. His air was a 4
And his Air deserves almost excelent score, upper 7's
Whoever decided that three identical turns are more impressive than a full rotation air is making surfing events almost unwatchable. Look at how many CT surfers only do turns now as a result.
Correct!
The WSL released the judging criteria for the day when it was announced on. Multiple flowing turns was the criteria, not single Hail Mary manouvres. Do some research before having a cry
@@lebowski6061 Nobody is crying. This judging criteria is making the tour unwatchable. Any judging system that dumbs down the accomplishments needed is seriously flawed.
@@paulmunster212they feel the need to dumb it down because most people and particularly Brazilians don’t understand how judging works. All most people see is n0 BiG AiR mEaNs SuRfiNg BaD. And Medina leading the charge on saying it’s bad for the sport is ridiculous and unprofessional. Surfing is a flow based sport and you should be rewarded for utilising a wave for all it offers, not just one air on a section after pumping down the line. People like Italo have been found out in recent years because judges aren’t rewarding this kind of surfing because it’s boring.
when u keep ur mounth shot u r a genius@@lebowski6061
Am I hallucinating? So a full rota air doesn’t count? …… over 80s style snaps to the beach? His surfing on the face was more radical and precise too. Has he stolen the head judges wife?
There has been a deflation of single manouver scores on the men's side for the last few years, that may be annoying but it is consistent. And is probably fair given the frequency and porportion of the top surfers who pull them off in heats now.
But if you count the number of maneuvers and the technicality and difficulty of them I would say Medina won that heat.
@@DanielHatchman This is true but it’s not fair. It’s a consistently bad idea. There are about 5 surfers on the tour who can pull a full rota like Gabes which puts them on a different level to the others. So they should be rewarded for it.
@@DanielHatchman Which is good to see because most of the guys on tour can do an air reverse in their sleep and were using them as a tool to manufacture a score. Give me huge flowing power carves over someone sprinting down the line to pop an air reverse anyday
Fundamentals executed with power
And pazzaz will out scored big standard rotas every time. Facts bro
There’s something extremelly weird going on
Gotta love Cole's effort, but that wasn't enough to beat Medina's performance.
Sure it was. It's a done deal.
Clearly it was since he advanced to the next round...
Cole did the same turn 5 times on a small wave to win, if you are white you can win a title with only one move, like the 2023 womens champ.
This judging is honestly ruining the sport. #WSL take a look in the mirror
You are destroying the evolution of the surf...WorldShameLeague
Criteria for the day was about multiple flowing turns not single airs
@@lebowski6061sure, now compare medina's 7.10 e to Houshmand's 7.47. It's ridiculous, Medina's was far better
@@Wetsand348 no way 😂 Cole’s turns were way faster and more dynamic. Two of medinas turns were floaters. Come on man, just accept you got this one wrong
@@lebowski6061 cole's last wave wasnt even better than his own 6.8. Small and flat wave with identical turns, out of which only one was great. That could have never been more than 6.5, and I'm being quite generous here
@@Wetsand348 nah he squeezed 5 solid turns into around 10 seconds with basically no pumping in between. A few power hacks, a dynamic 2nd turn and a finishing snap on the closeout all linked together perfectly. Pretty good in my opinion
7.47??? Shame, judges.
This last wave, ehich was insanely overscored wasn't better than Cole's 6.8, neither of Medina's best waves, it wasn't better than Ramzi Boukhiam's 6.8, and it received the exact same score as Kanoa's wave which was unvelievably better.
Small wave that really wasn't vertical at all. It's crazy that this happened right after Ethan Ewing was incredibly overscored, and Wsl was harshly criticized.
This might just have been the worst judgement, that we have witnessed, like medina said
Medina didn't even see the wave, his arrogant's, cost him the heat.
@@surflix4306 excuse me ?
I remembered that heat medina x gaudaskas in trestles😊
@@surflix4306he literally said he didn't even think about going for that wave since it was a small wave. And even Cole said that the wave didn't look good, but it was his last chance. That literally means both surfers agree that was not a good wave.
wsl your judges got lost 😢😢😢
Did WSL judges give an extra 4 points for Coles wave for spraying Gabby. I didn't know spraying your competitor was part of the criteria,
True 🤣🤣
I can do that ! WQS 25 here we come 😂
if they explained it that way and said that was part of the criteria, id respect it
if Ethan scored that medinas air would be a 8+
First Ethan needs to be able to surf two waves at the same heat😂
World Shame League !!
Agreed with Medina. Anytime there's a wave ridden before the buzzard, the judges eat it up and add extra points for the drama.
but when he did he wont got the score
Yeah, this is the only through line with Ethan's heat. It's very sad indeed.
Flores vs jjf pipe final, Flores last wave buzzer beater was overscored but when you rewatch the second best jjf wave is better than Flores best. I stopped watching now but was a big asp fan
The best surfer of the heat is out. It must be greatly disappointing for athletes to have judges like these.
I am so glad to see you actually posted Gab's interview it means a lot. Thank you for that.
There's something strange happening at WSL, I wouldn't compete anymore in Medina's place
Me too
why?
We still do not know the judges names. Same heat, Basque Country judge 14.5 and Aussie judge 12.5 to Medinas best waves. It looks like the scores are all over the place in this event. There were judges giving Coles last wave a 7.8 and 7.7. Anyways I believe there should be improvements like each judge having access only to his own scores wearing noise cancelling headsets and not knowing at the end of the heat how much overall a surfer needs to win. Or someone thinks that Coles last wave if surfed in the middle of the heat would have been a 7.43.
Turn the chat on, criticism more than you can handle?
Exactly right
Sick of the victim complex crying I reckon
Hahahaha deadass
Gabriel ripping and doing airs! WTH?? Kainoa also out ripped Cole. Cole looks like he's forcing everything and Gabe and Kainoa has good flow and timing.
These judges must play golf or something. They probably never tried an air reverse in their lives.
The judges shouldn’t know the scores. Give them a clean video feed with no audio. Far too many heats are being influenced by their scores and not the actual surfing
Looks like judges want Housmand to stay on CT .... did Visla paid ??
Os juizes não tem mais vergonha
At this points just ask him to leave bro, that was insanely bad. 2 events in a row that Medina gets blatantly robbed. Make judges accountable for their decisions, just like any other job. I'm glad he is speaking up, tired of seeing athletes just going through shit and having to be quiet so they don't upset their sponsors/WSL.
They need to score the top 3 waves to make it fairer. Scoring only 2 allows to much luck (e.g. a big set rolling in 60 seconds from end of heat) and judging controversy to enter in to the equation.
That’s a good point. It also encourages the surfers to get more busy which would be far more entertaining for the viewers. Less sitting with priority for 15 mins while the commentators desperately try to think of something to say.
Actually an excellent point!
Good point - it used to be too 3 didn’t it ?
This is an excellent point worth discussing.
Yo WTF is going on with the judging?!?!
True
World Shame League. 6.30 in an aerial trick??
There was no way Cole had a better score than Gab. Gabe was a showcase of great style, technician, sharp strong. in comparison Cole was slugish/ average. I agree with Gab totally.
That sluggish last wave, where he buried the board with deep hooks off the top, gave medina a well needed shower. So sluggish it threw a drum of water on medinas head. You see medina look back with tears knowing he gave it away
@@surfershaper nah, judges are anti-brazil
Just seen his interview. He was class. Completely correct.
After paying more attention to this heat…
and with ALLL love and gratitude to the WSL…
#LongLiveWorldSurfLeague
Gabriel Medina seems to have been underscored, in my humble opinion. That full rotation tail high reverse WAY above the lip?!?… was CLEARLY under appreciated, even with the landing as a long layback finish. Gabe’s core strength and determination to get back up for the completion should have been rewarded on degree of difficulty alone, regardless of the degree of the air itself… IMHO.
#LongLiveGabrielMedina
I’m super happy Cole has this chance to compete and shine! He is a true power surfer for the goofy footers on the CT, and I think he’s a classy guy who deserves to be at this high level of competition.
#LongLiveColeHoushmand
But Gabe is correct in saying the inconsistent judging needs to be discussed openly!
*respectfully submitted
For me it's a shame to see a guy surfing a good wave(for the session), showing a beautiful line and variations, loosing for a robotic line in a small wave well surfed. An air wave perfectly executed in a small and bad wave in that case should be at least 6 hi or 7 low. It's really bad see things like this, they don't think about it. It's a shame!
Dislike bar is disabled, no live chat. Wsl censorship.
Wsl adding the interviews and replaying several times Cole first turn, on that over scored last wave, that washes Medina..... wsl just creating some drama here. This is surfing competition not Hollywood.
Its been hard to watch . Horrible waves, horrible judgements. I just stopped after Gabs heat
same. i turned it off. enough crap. they force us to watch second rate surfers rather than the best evers
THEY WANT AMERICAN SURFERS ON THE TOUR. ITS A MARKET MATTER.....
I think surfers on the tour should judge competitors, have 3 surfers, 2 judges, clearly these judges have no clue what they are doing
Medina is right… that kind of judging bias is just bad for the sport. By all means, WSL is trying to push Americans up in the ranking. As Gabe said…. That is sad!
thats why carissa and stphanie leave this shit...! final 5 is not fair.....and the scores are not fair! there is something going on behind this ridiculous show!
What do you aussies and north americans think about this heat? does airs count less then snaps where u live? please tell me cause i'm getting nuts with that heat.
wasn't that air at least 7 points for anyone who know's the difficult?
I’m European. No bias here. Gabe was correct. This is bad for the sport. They talk about variety and then don’t score a full rota air. I’ve been following the tour for 20 years and it’s clear there’s something very weird going on here.
Yeah, the air was underscored for sure.
North American here

WSL what a shame…I felt bad for Gabby….Well said, well done Gabby!
*Interview
Gabby first words…
… ” I made the mistake???”… the best line of the season!
Shocking!!!
WSL a private company should be able to delivery a fair judgement, but you guys can’t, WSL owned by a few guys, not sure if it is fair to the sport itself!
We all know why WSL has done that, and continuously doing against Gabby, it’s the only way to stop him to win titles!!
#Stand with Gabby Medina
Like Laura was his dad or something 😂
Gabriel Medina 🇧🇷 in the wave who scored 7.10 was much better than the American Houshmand who scored 7.47!! The judges were unfair!!
This has to be the only sport in the world that chooses to show replays over live action. So bizarre.
world shame league😂😂
Serious disappointment with that scoring… there was a huge difference in these 2
When you're forced to surf in this crap then you get crappy results... This one is on the WSL.
Medina’s 7.1 was at least a point better than Cole’s 7.4. Hands down…
O Cole surfou super bem. Achei as ondas dele pequena. E o aéreo do Medina foi mal valorizado.
Don't like Medina at all BUT HE WAS RIPPED OFF IN THAT HEAT.tipocal of wsl judges.A HOLES.
I think Medina should drop off tour and do cool surf trips and edits like JOB and Nathan Florence. Medina has a huge following and could make a decent career without the hassle of the WSL and subjective judges...
Was the worst judging that I saw in years. ISA please start a seriously world championship.
I reckon the over score was Cole’s 6.80. Medina’s 7.10 was an easy 1 point better than Cole’s 6.80.
Wsl are pushing for storyline’s to make the cut interesting but in the process losing its true fans the people that actually surf
Medina surfed 10x better than the other guy! Bloody robbery!
Remember kids, a head high wave on Medina is chest high on Cole.😅
The scoring of Cole’s last wave was controversial for sure, but so was Medina’s decision not to block with priority. Question: How many other pro’s would have let Houshmand go with clock winding down?
Answer: 0
Never leave in judges hands what you can control yourself.
The fact that he let it go tells you all you need to know. Gabby is known for burning just to burn. He didn’t go because he could tell there wasn’t a “7” in that wave. And he was right.
@@aloeup2121 He was wrong as he lost the heat.. He even got showered by Houshmand's combo. Super close heat but unprofessional from Medina, he even groused when Laura told him about his mistake.
@@aloeup2121 Medina had a nightmare in this heat. Ignored the judging criteria that he was told at the start of the day, and failed to block Cole through ignorance. Nobody to blame but himself

Beware of boycotting sponsors, after so many mistakes by judges
GUYS (WSL) honestly, you are becoming an shame. You are losing credibility and are also leaving fans disappointed and embarrassed with everything that has been happening in this institution called WSL. Shame Shame Shame!
To the judges, please don't let our sport lose its charm. be honest, for the sports fans. Do not try to benefit your favorite athletes or athletes from your countries. All athletes certainly work very hard to be there and be targets of “unjust” criminal trials, just let the best come, regardless of what country they are from. For the love of sport!
Becoming a shame?... they've looked alot like the Evil Empire for a long while now.
WSL that's the reason why I have stopped watching, Full rotation in the air not many people can do, it should be a 8 +. I believe Cole Houshmand is embarrassed now. Not his fault.. But this takes away the beauty of it.

After You speak Why many surferes stop to compete in the circuit.
Aussie here. Here’s the thing, a huge air is always impressive but most are just your run of the mill which, in my eyes, are not the same as a big solid hack! His air didn’t land clean either. That being said, I thought Medina won the heat because there were no solid hacks in that heat either.
Medina sounded so dejected. I recon he should follow the lead of Nath Florence and go fund me surf with sponsorship. I’m sure many guys on tour are thinking long those lines. ESPECIALLY, with the new disastrous finals format.
100%
There was nothing run of the mill about Gabes air.
@@pablodagamamoreira619 🤷♂️
The basque Judges given 7.8 and 7.7 on this last waves.... WTF!!?
Judges analyze the following elements when scoring waves:
Commitment and degree of difficulty
Innovative and progressive maneuvers
Combination of major maneuvers
Variety of maneuvers
Speed, power and flow
Simple question: in which of those criteria Cole was better than Medina?
Medina did make a mistake, while I agree it wasn't a 7.47 (it only needed to be a 7 which I think it was close to), Medina could see his first turn and should have recognised it was a potential threat.. Why didn't he use priority!? He wasn't even watching..
It really shouldn't be close to a 7, if you just compare to Medina's 7.10 this should be clear. Unbelievable judging
Looking at the criteria, the difference should be a lot bigger at that point. Gabe won this heat with at least 2 points

This is true
Antes eles disfarçavam. Agora perderam a vergonha.
In the meantime Nate Florence is riding giant Cloudbreak, Kelly and Mick are shredding bomb Kirra and the Pipe crew is scoring wildly. What feeble raunchy surf for the second contest in a row. WSL needs to be a lot more on the swell forecast and peak swell season scheduling.
Y’all must not have watched the same heat. Coles last wave hit the top of the point better than the other waves. He was able to string together 2 solid turns straight away. Gabby’s 7 had 2 floaters in it 😂 and his air was on a waist high wave
This was ugly after the rotation, the American's last wave was the best score, the judges can only be fooling themselves or is there something wrong with the WSL
