soldiers are the greatest victims of war, they suffer all the worst of it and that needs to finally be recognized and they need to be given priviliged status in return for orderly conduct, not some crumbs thrown their way but litterally freeing them from income taxes for frontline combat soldiers as well as preference for government employment. it is equallity in it's purest form.

William Calley died in April 2024. He was the only soldier convicted for involvement in the massacre. He was sentenced to life imprisonment but his sentence kept on being reduced until he was pardoned after a few years of house arrest. Many people, including politicians and media figures, supported Calley and befriended him. He died at the age of 80.
Unfortunately, Hugh Thompson and Lawrence Colburn were treated very poorly. They received death threats, were harassed, and were assigned increasingly dangerous missions. It’s unfortunate Thompson, Andreotta, and Colburn were recognized for their heroism so late, but history will remember them for being true heroes.

It wasn't senseless, many of the men and some of the women in the village were in fact VC, they were the one setting up sharpened pungi sticks and landmine's along the trails the US troops patrolled; how come the villagers were never injured by those traps? they walked those same trails as the GI's did; either they were very lucky or they knew exactly where they were.
And after weeks of casualties the US troops began noticing that, and its not hard to conclude who were the one's responsible.

Hugh Thompson and his helicopter crew were not the only guys that didn’t participate in it. Some of calleys men in my lai didn’t follow orders.
One soldier told calley strait to his face he wasn’t gonna kill any of the civilians and calley pointed a gun at him threatening to kill the soldier if he didn’t kill any civilians,
The soldier said to calley “if you think you can get away with it go ahead and kill me. Calley lowered his weapon and went off to kill other civilians.
Another soldier made an excuse to calley telling calley that the soldier was gonna “secure the outer part of my lai” when in reality he was just going to the outer perimeter of my lai just so he doesn’t have to kill civilians.
Another example in my lai was the only casualty by us forces in my lai. A soldier who intentionally shot himself in the foot and made a lie up that his gun discharged and got medically evacuated from the area. He said he shot his foot was because “I didn’t want to kill any civilians”
In a different situation with the controversial group tiger force. One amercian soldier witnessed his men killing civilians and he got so angry he threatened to kill his men if they shot any more.
He reported it to his superiors the killings but the superiors instead said “he was the crazy one”

Hugh Thompson’s bravery in exposing the truth shines a light on the brutal reality of what happened to innocent civilians. But Mỹ Lai was just one of many massacres-countless others occurred in places like Mộ Đức(not very far from My Lai) and across Vietnam that remain lesser-known. Thompson was a hero, there is no dispute on that, but he wasn't the reason it was uncovered. The internal investigations he initiated had actually stalled while he was still deployed.
Ronald Lee Ridenhour deserves credit for his unrelenting pursuit of this incident. He was just a door gunner for a recon unit unrelated to Calley’s when he heard the rumors about what happened.
Out of his own initiative he pursued the story by tracking down everyone who was spreading the story within the army at the time until he found a soldier in the hospital who had his own plans to murder Calley and his squad over what happened.
Ridenhour talked him out of it, but he became the first key witness to the crime. Ridenhour was then sent back to the states where he followed up by writing to the president and every congressmen he could with all his evidence. Only one took up the issue, a democrat from Arizona launched a congressional committee and from there it snow balled.
Ronald L. Haeberle came out with his photos of the incident and Nixon couldn't cover it up after that.
What Thompson did took courage to stand up against such evils, and what Ridenhour did took audacity to seek it out and expose it.

Hearing this story brought tears to my eyes. I only knew about the My Lai massacre but didn’t know there was a small group of Americans who prevented more killings of civilians. Salute to Hugh Thompson and his crew.

There were a couple good men in Vietnam, but from what I heard soldiers could be divided into 3 categories as the war went on:
Apathetic: These people had gotten worn down over time and were essentially just emotionlessly doing as they were told,
Sadistic: These people took the opportunity to take out their violent urges on the Vietnamese people,
Survivors: These people had been primed to expect potential death around every corner and saw every non-american soldier as a potential threat to their lives, so they kill civilians to keep themselves safe if those civilians were actually threats.

Some of the soldiers involved in my lai didn’t follow orders to massacre civilians, one soldier told calley he refused and calley threatened to shoot but the soldier still refused and taunted calley saying “if you think you can get away with it shoot me”
Another soldier made up a excuse to calley saying he was gonna secure the perimeter on the outer ends of my lai when in reality the soldier was using it as a excuse to not kill any civilians.
One soldier the only casualty in my lai by the amercians shot himself in the foot saying it discharged by accident. so he can be medically evacuated but in reality he didn’t want to shoot civilians so he used his wound as a way to get out.
