  • Negative feedback is going to happen! The more experienced you get, often the less it happens. But if it does, what do you do! When is enough, enough? Will you loose the client?

Thanks Simeon!!! Once Again - Great Advice!
I think I suffered heavily from this when I first started out, I had a few clients and I would pander to their every whim, one in particular would complain about every little detail and I realised that I had created a monster! I was spending so much time on revisions that the jobs were no longer profitable. I realised that the client relationship was going sour, from my side, but after speaking to a few other experienced videographers and editors they advised that when I wrote up a contract I should include a certain number of revisions per video, so I choose two sets of revisions for the initial price and then an hourly rate for anything done after that. So now whenever I get new clients I make them aware of this procedure and they are generally quite happy to stick to it. Obviously if there are minor details I'd do them for free, but having it in writing does deter any more nightmare scenarios. Thanks again for these videos they really do help people at my level!

Fantastic! ... I agree ... Customers are always right ...... except for when they are wrong ;-) But this is the reason before we even get retainer, that i explain to them that we do not hard edit photos, we do not plastic edit faces/body. Shots will be taken in a professional fashion. If you want additional editing to have them a certain way, we can discuss future editing otherwise we take the photo according to the project. The double chin portion was absolutely right, THAT'S when they are right. But "I thought you'd take it like this other photographer" ... Well ... if you expected that photographer's results, why didn't you go to them instead? Like Respect the individual people lol

I had a negative experiencie with a long term client that I had. I produced and shot a documentary for them but in the end they werent satisfied with the footage. So they only cancelled 50% of the whole amount, killed the story but pretended to maintain the rights of the footage they even stated was "low quality". I strongly disagreed with these judgment and explained with a lot of detail the context of the shots (it was in filmed in a high risk country). But either way the conflict had to be resolved through mediators. What do you think you would have done in that case?

Clarisa Quintero M sorry to hear that. That’s really tough. It’s happened to me. In my case that company used it as an excuse to not pay me and make a profit. I had paid to fly myself and a team to the US. I lost money. It was a number of years ago. I offered to edit the docu. They declined. When they ripped me off, I edited the video and proved them wrong and spoke to there client. Ironically yesterday the corporation contacted me and offered us work direct. Because they too had a bad experience. Your situation is tough because it’s a long term client. The relationship with a long term client is paramount. Though realistically going as far as mediation likely means you won’t work together again until the lead contact is gone or you work with another department. The reality is you can’t keep everyone happy. But I’d learn from the feedback. Consider editing the piece yourself and prove them wrong. Just my personal thoughts. The key thing is to rebuild your confidence. That is the most important thing

Thank you so much for your advice. I have a problem with my clients that they don't really know what they want and at the beginning they don't give me enough hints but when I create the photo based on my ideas they say no I don't like it and when I ask what needs to be changed they say I don't know what I want you do it and then I can say it's good or not . but I can't capture different scenarios to see which one they like. what's your opinion on that? Thank s a lot

Mitra, do you ask them what photos on your website that they like? I always worry when they can't provide any examples from my own portfolio, I think, why did you hire me then?
