  • Follow us in this short film exploring a very unique Jet mine in North Yorkshire !, Jet is a type of lignite, the lowest rank of coal, and is
a gemstone. Unlike many gemstones, jet is not a mineral, but is rather a mineraloid. It is derived from wood that has changed under extreme pressure.
Unlike lignite Jet stone is not laminated and so has littletendency to split but breaks with a conchoidal fracture. It can be worked readily on a lathe and takes a high glossy polish. Jet had been Used for ornaments from the Bronze Age to The present time !

Hi Tony, when I visit Whitby I usually buy a piece of black jet jewellery from there. It has a lovely shine to it. Its not that expensive either. Whitby is known for its jet. Interesting mine! ❤much love 😊 stay safe.

I found a nice lump of polished jet in the river Don Sth York's. I imagine it a relic of the Sheffield flood 1864 because jet was popularly used for handles on pocket knives & a lot of little mesters workshops were destroyed.

Hi Antonio, a nice little mine to explore, pretty interesting that they re-used it for water supplies.
Thank you for sharing, much love. xx 💖

The jet bands are only about a foot thick so, rather than take out a lot of mudstone, the jet miners tended to dig as little as they could and CRAWLED along the bnds, taking the jet out and as little mudstone as they needed to.
