2023 Toyota GR Corolla: Close to The Perfect Blend of Livability, Affordability, and Fun

- The 2023 Toyota GR Corolla just won our 10Best award, but so too have two other fun-do-drive cars that wear similar badging: The GR86 and GR Supra. It’s remarkable that Toyota’s three most recent sporty cars have all been knock-outs in their respective segments. That’s why each one is on our 10Best list, after all. But read between the lines and you’ll find something even more interesting.
The GR86 and GR Supra were made in partnership with other manufacturers, Subaru and BMW, respectively. The fact that the Supra's new six-speed manual transmission feels even better than BMW's version hints at Toyota's expertise in creating a satisfying driving experience. The GR Corolla confirms it.

Happy holidays, everyone! I was a little too excited at 06:37 and misspoke. The torque split adjustments are 60:40 front to rear, 50:50, and 30:70. Thanks for watching!
So Carlos, I know you loved the FK8 Type R. So would you take the GR Corolla or the FK8 Type R from a pure drive's car standpoint?
You were having too much fun all over the place! 8:54 that front end gripe, oops, it bites!!!
@@apolloandratti7922 Judging by how much fun he was having, laughing/giggling at every turn, and stumbling repeatedly on his words. Never seen him like this... I'd say, he prefers this car. I do. And, I've been a Honda fan boi for over 20years!

Can't wait to pick this car up 3 years from now!
good luck if it's anything like focus rs
A year later but I got my GRC Circuit Edition with no issue or markup. If you still want one, there are plenty of Premiums at or below MSRP
This will be the closest to driving the car for most normal people 🤣💰
Lol normal/average sucks!!!!
I’m absolutely outraged that a regular person won’t be able to afford or even get their hands on these due to markups and limited supply. This release is gonna be worse than the type r where only influencers, the wealthy, and extremely lucky get these cars. Hell, I had a hard time getting a new BRZ, but ultimately decided on one because I knew I wouldn’t get one of these at sticker
100 percent. I was on a list for one of these. I was all set to sign the dotted line, then the dealer came back with a $30K upcharge. So much for affordability. This completely negates one of the main reasons consumers want this car, a fun, practical, affordable sports car. It's infuriating. I bought a manual regular corolla hatch from an independent seller instead. Quite a step down I know, but at least it has a stick and is fun to drive.
These times will pass and go back to normal again.
Markups are a symptom of low supply which are a symptom of supply chains being disrupted by government lockdowns. Before you blame dealers for markups be sure to first blame the fools who vote for authoritarians who hide their must for tyranny behind promises of safety
Your best bet is used. Get one 20k miles and catch a break.
@@ytsux9259 Not for another 2 years.
So tired of seeing all these reviews on cars that most folks won't be able to buy due to them either being out of stock at Toyota, or when the dealerships gets them , they want to sell them @ $25K above retail price...
I have developed the same sentiment. It is hard to get excited about a car that will have extensive mark ups and limited availability.
Agreed. I’ve just about unsubscribed from all of the big name automotive review channels as they all seem to live in a fantasy world. Fun to watch for a few I’m sure, but most consumers can’t afford what these reviewers show. If anything, they get people so enthusiastic that they’ll go out and buy overpriced/overhyped vehicles anyway. All that does is feed the wolves at the stealerships and maintains a bubble that desperately needs to burst.
Yup
Got Type R for MSRP. The Gorolla and Toyota dealerships are out of their mind
Dude i swear its complete bs
Carlos you have been missed! Good to see your review again.....
Always good to have Carlos back on screen!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone! Very well done with the video. I absolutely love this car! This car will definitely go down in history as a modern classic. I hope to own one one day. All this performance, practicality, 2 years of maintenance for free with Toyota Care and you get that legendary Toyota quality. Well done Toyota. Well done.
Great stuff!
You nailed this review
Outstanding review, from an Outstanding guy...
The creepy hand from rear seats at 09:33 made it even better
The GR Corolla would be an amazing deal but with 10-20k dealer markups, there are much better options out there. Stupid people paying hugely inflated prices are part of the problem of course.
Can't wait to see the Lightning Lap time - along side new Type R, Elantra N, WRX, Z, Supra manual.........what a golden age!
Amazing review. I can’t wait to get my hands on one.
Just got mine today
And. Love it?
Glad you are going to Grattan Raceway. A very underrated track and amazing to drive at.
I want one... Local Toyota got one price at MSRP $40,168. Dealer Added Markup $19,995. Net Price $60,163. LOL They don't even have the car on the lot yet too.
Cool car for $35-40k. Anything over that and it’s a bad buy if you’re going to actually drive it as a daily fun car.
for over 40k I'll go MK8 Golf R
@@zubastik2992 there’s a plethora of better daily performing cars for $40k, with warranties, over a GR Corolla. And those cars will be so much nicer inside as well.
It's true -- forget a Circuit or Morizo Edition (even if you could find one). If you can find a Core with the diffs and seats, buy it for like $37K MSRP and drive it like you stole it. Easier said than done these days, though.
love the seat design.
The hell of it is, the GR Corolla as shown here isn't that much less expensive than my 2022 Genesis G70 V6 was, out the door (a couple ticks short of $50k), and my dealer didn't clobber me with a lot of add-on crap, over and above MSRP.
The business of finding really good bang-for-the-buck rides gets harder all the time.
Could never blame someone for going that direction. G70 is a great looking and performing vehicle. But i think it's just a matter of different strokes. The GR Corolla likely is a more tossable and fun car to drive if you're into that type of dynamic. But yeah for a daily driver, a G70 at that price is really up there.
totally different classes of car.
I can attest, I have driven and owned many different cars and trucks……from an e46 m3 when new, back in 04 (still regret selling it). To currently owning an R8 and bronco raptor, with many different sedans, couples, suvs in between. I can confidently say this gr is one of the most fun cars I’ve ever driven. I legitimately havnt giggled in car like I did in this thing in a very long time. The last two cars pops to mind, a 458 Italia that a friend let me beat up, and my e46 to quite honest…..and that’s what this gr reminds me of the most, the dynamics and fun of that m3, expect much grippier with the awd. It’s really a hoot. All these ppl complaining about the markups, yes it sucks…..but the other reality is that these GRs Will most likely hold great value. As nice as this gentleman’s genesis is, it won’t have the same desirability/collectibility in the future. This thing is “hand made” for heavens sake. It’s a special drivers car.
What track was this filmed at? Looks like a lot of fun!
How were the temps on track? Like oil and coolant? Did the brakes fade at all during your session?
They said no fade at 6:00
The only heating problem is the rear differential which quits after a couple of laps. Then you have a front drive car.
Sweet car for sure
I seen one the other day at the dealer…nice car. 🚘
Great episode.. but who's hand was that🤣🤣
Carlos, when you’re talking to Toyota reps, please please please ask them to withhold allocations to dealers who place 20K ADMs on these.
I wish all of these new reviews would talk about current real world pricing. Cores are selling for $5k-$20k over MSRP, can’t imagine what circuits/Morizos are gonna sell for. Lists are years out for MSRP or close to MSRP pricing. People should be patient and wait for prices to go down.
I posted a response above to current prices. The state of VA is selling them for MSRP. Worse case, pay for shipping. I got 2 shipping quotes from VA to CA @ about $1200.
some slight mods this thing will be running high 12s and good in the corners what a fun car
GR Yaris in the 10's lol. These engines can make 500hp on stock internalst
@@Philbyyyyyeah but for how long?
They could sell hundreds of thousands of these but they’ll only make 3. 😅
What?!!! They're making a few thousand a year.
@@ytsux9259 Yea I meant in a year but to be fair a few thousand is like 1% of hundreds of thousands. I mean who in their right mind wouldn't buy that if it was available?
such a great car
my dream car
No mention from C&D about how Toyota is open about artificial scarcity about this car. None of us common folk will have access to this car without a $10k+ markup.
There's a reason C&D and other reviewers aren't mentioning this. They are bribed into playing along with this PR charade.
Artificial scarcity? The plant this car is built will only produce so many cars. Trust me I'm on your side. Feel the same on the Civic R
@@stevethomas760 Literally just do a google search of "corolla GR artificial scarcity". Toyota openly and proudly admits to artificially producing low numbers of the GR in order to increase hype. It's not a conspiracy. It's not a matter of opinion.
@@scootcha That's a remarkably stupid plan. This is a great car that I won't give half a shit about because it doesn't exist in the real world. If you could walk on to a dealer lot and buy one, I would. "Hype" is only going to get them resentment.
I've seen some with the window sticker simply being the 40k it should be, while others have the 10k markup. Not sure if the dealership will be a stealership for the non marked up ones, but it's interesting to see the website displaying the car's MSRP as it should
9:32 that random hand took by surprise
For everyone discussing market adjustments you can actually find a decent amount of 23 circuit editions for sale between 44-50 with 1,000 to 5,000 miles on them. I found a dealership that does not apply market adjustments and my 24 circuit comes in by the end of April. I've had my deposit in since mid December, so that is really not too bad of a wait. Hope this information helps someone and for those really wanting this car good luck!
the mark ups must be insane
Where can I get one with no additional markup?
Expand your search
Canada?
@@BrodeyDoverosx I believe you are correct
Hi Carlos Lago you are tocayo im Carlos too. Blessings
I have a question case:
Assuming your friend has a 2013 Mazdaspeed3 2Gen, and wants to upgrade to a hot hatch that gives him fun to drive, but is a daily car at the same time, would you recommend upgrading to a GR corolla Circuit Edt or GolfR? or do you understand that both being HTch provide similar experiences that are not worth spending $50k or $60k
I think the days of insane markups are numbered, Toyota knows how to build and sell cars and if anyone can build enough for demand, it's Toyota. If not, this isn't worth more than MSRP as cool as it is. Once you get into 50k territory, you can buy a fun car and a daily instead of the "do it all" car
Toyota said they’re intentionally making limited amounts
@@barneyboyle6933 they see zero of the ADM, I think they will have a change of heart with the demand
@@tommyistommy They may see no ADM, but they get to ride the reputation of a highly sought after Corolla. Even regular Corolla hatches will sell better because of the GR’s reputation.
@@afcgeo882 perhaps that is the plan, typically Toyota does not hold back inventory or production though. TRD pro models are anything but limited production as an example.
@@tommyistommy TRD Pro are trims of highly profitable SUVs and pick-ups. They’re not models. The GR Corolla loses money on every unit sold, so there’s no incentive to make or sell more of them. The car exists for sport racing qualification and corporate image. Companies make products like this, occasionally.
Toyota: hey USA! We know you enthusiasts wanted the Yaris, but you guys get the heavier less fun version! Oh and good luck trying to get one because our dealers are assholes! LOL
Bigtime!
Americans are heavier
Edit... I have a GRC and it's a great size
Actually in Europe we got for the previous generation a hot hatch version of the yaris called Yaris GRMN (Gazoo Racing Master of Nurburgring)
So the GR yaris is not the first
Oh, I thought GRMN only applied to the Supra, and it was short for German Supra MK5, opposed to Japanese Supra MK4
@@copperkeyracing6167 😂😂please tell me its sarcasm
It's technically a virtual car which we never see here in dealerships 😢
Toyota gr Corolla simply awesome Cape Town South Africa
Might as well be an exotic... In terms of price after mark ups.Not what it was intended to be.
The GR Corolla WAS intended to have high markups. Toyota is very open and honest about how they are creating artificial scarcity.
Subaru WRX quietly exited the chat room...
the wrx is quite a bit cheaper (also not marked up), and not a limited run of cars like the GR
@@HarryTwatter My girlfriend is looking at a Crosstrek. I asked about the availability/mark up of the WRX. "If a dealership does a mark up Subaru will cut their allotment"

Helping hand.
I was wondering who else saw this LOL
9:33 Is that a cadaver or someone you kidnappeds hand coming from the backseat Carlos 😳🤔
Walked into Toyota to find the Heavy Metal gr waiting for me at 3k over msrp. I’m in love
Lol at accusing the Type R of 'gaming' the 0-60 metric with gearing. A ton of 6 speeds hit 60 in 2nd gear. Having shorter gearing has it's own advantages in getting off the line and that happens to make more sense with the extra grip with AWD
My local dealer has VW Golf R that are selling at MSRP
I got one at msrp so it is possible if you don’t settle for markups
Great car but incredibly hard to either find or get anywhere near MSRP
Corolla FX-16 Vibes
Where are you finding affordable? Is this with or without the markup?
It's crazy that we have a corolla that does 0-60 under 5 seconds with a 105 trap speed and Carlos is like meh it's not the fastest thing on the road 😅.
Cause it’s not. It’s trying to be the Evo 9 that it can’t be
@Love Like a Hurricane lol you must be a evo9 fan boy it's cool i like them too. How is it trying to be an evo 9 because it's awd, because it's turbo charged ? Is a Subaru Sti trying to be a evo 9 😅? If where going by #s the corolla handles just as well as a evo 9 and its 1 mph faster in the quarter mile.
@@LoveLikeaHurricane u plz get some life bcuz Mitsubishi is dead !!
@@LoveLikeaHurricane couldn’t be more wrong.

#savethemanuals #hothatch
I wish the GR Yaris had slightly more usable rear seats
The GRC doesn't have that much room in the back either
Lol @ the affordability in the title....
Carlos you are the Mark McGrath of the auto review industry lol...where don't you work?
I wish this started at $30k 😞
try $30K plus an additional $25K to $30K added to it from the dealers.
Dream on. With $5k down you'll probably be out the door at $42k
This car is a 32-35k car. They are out of their minds for 37k on a base model
@@LoveLikeaHurricane have you seen the price of things lately? obviously not.
It could start at $5 but the problem is where it ends. 😂
Haven't been to Grattan in 30 years. Loved racing there in my IT/A AE86 Corolla. I'm gonna see if I can order a Corolla next month, but proving hard to get!
If you didn't order it before it was announced you're not getting one.
@@aluisious I work at HQ. Pretty sure I will though they are only trickling them out for us to get.
They're making such a limited run of the Honda R and the Toyota GR wow I guess that's what makes them special! Maybe won't have the opportunity to buy one?
Toyota ticked all the boxes except in two categories...
Price and that front grill... looks matter but I guess its pretty difficult to buff out the bones of a Corolla
what is the point of all the new releases when you can't get one? The only car I could find in my area without markup is 2022 Corolla. All others you got to wait for 3 months plus $5K markup.
How much?!?!
Can tell by the in car camera the right quality is too stiff
Would be nice to be able to place an order and just wait like they do in Japan and not get screwed with mark ups. Toyota and Honda can stuff these cars.
Affordability lol. Good luck at your local dealer.
They were so close to a perfect car, and then they put a fuel sucking 3cyl in this… for what? 1.6L-2.0L turbo I4 is what should be in this
Less cylinders is generally more efficient actually, even given the same displacement. Wayyyy too many factors to say it being three cylinders is why it's not good on gas.

You fellas please explain to me why that’s their problem? They can’t help what dealerships do, how you fellas go to the dealerships picket

In Ontario, you can only order the core, $48,700 .... There is a dealer fee of 1221 . Never heard about a dealer fee in Canada before. This is getting more ridiculous 😂. As the days go by. I make inquiries to 4 dealers. None of now if they would even get one. No dealership contacted me to say they are expecting one. You have so many other choices. Toyota is also contributing to the problem by keeping production low. I will stick with Mazda the cx 70 will be my next car.
I'm hoping Toyota ramps up production but given the fact these are built in Japan I doubt it
Was so excited when they announced these, but with the market right now I don't have a snowballs chance in hell at being able to afford one. Like I get some markups when they're brand new, but what's been going on lately is just robbery.
Who was the poor guy stuck in the back seat?
Wish we had the lottery for these GR Corollas like they are doing in Japan......the US dealers are just showing their worst facets with how they marking up this admittedly great car. Just remember that used M2 Comps, AMG A45s etc. are out there for the crazy mark up prices being asked for GR Corollas.
9:30 the hand appears.
Maybe us normal enthusiasts will finally be able to get one come 2025 or 26
Most reviewers found the FWD TypeR was more fun and had oversteer then the AWD GR Corolla which felt more stable and understeer. Hoping suspension setups or a refresh would make it more fun to drive.
Yeah the GR's feel more controlled. Need to drive it faster or it seems too easy. Having said the reviews that I've seen they are having alot of fun. Ie. This review, throttle house, straight pipes etc.
This looks like the old 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 except with all wheel drive . This is probably what the Mazdaspeed 3 should of been .
And affordable sports hatch for the people but... not for the people after unobtanium production numbers and dealer markups.
How do the make a car with no arm rest 🤦🏾♂️
YES
I'm sure there's something going on here that I don't understand but why the hell are companies coming out with these 3 cylinder engines???
45k for mid grade model ? That’s way overpriced for a 3 cylinder Corolla
“…Affordability…” LOL
Nice car but ridiculously expensive
Car looks sharp, but can you chill on the bass?
This car is fast enough. Auto journalists will always complain. The real issue is it is over priced in Canada. Not many will buy, Toyota will say not enough consumers are buying. therefore, we will stop building. Remember the Lexus gs 350.. that is exactly the same scenario...
👌
How about a 2 door? 🤷
Why say affordable that's BS knowing dam well more than most people will never be able to own one.
You don't need a track car. Will stick with the lower priced XSE Corolla that gets better gas milege and a much more comfortable ride with more amenities.
@CarDriver01. How do I do that?
“Affordability” hmm. That’s up to the dealers.
Focus RS or....?
The RS is junk, engine is whack. I wish that wasn't the case cuz it's a dope car.
#pristineedge though
We live in a strange time where the GR Corolla is 100% built/developed and designed fully by Toyota but the GR Supra is pretty much a BMW.
What is strange? Two companies built a low volume sports car together to save money. It’s been done many times. Hell, Porsche straight up built a Mercedes sedan many years ago.
Toyota has been building corollas for decades. They’ve also built many cars with turbos and awd, like the celica.
Stop dramatizing things. You’re not living in a strange time, you just don’t know history.
@@sethgunn8256 Like the Holden and Toyota back in 80s-90s. Apollo - Camry, Nova - Corolla, Commodore - Lexcen. They called it reverse badge engineering.

@@sethgunn8256 Yep. Collaboration is not unusual at all, to save money. Toyota didn't have a straight 6 to put into a new Supra, so collaboration is beneficial. Honda and GM are collaborating on EVs to save money.
