- Bottles and trash are fun but today we get to make money scrapping metal! A friend loaded me up with a truckload of aluminium cylinders to scrap and I thought it would be fun to see how we can make the most money out of them. Yeeaahh.. "fun". I did not expect it to go like that! Scrap metal adventures in the snow! At least it was worth it, heh.

You're a rockstar for allowing us to view your learning experience. Was it worth my time to watch your video???? ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!
Side note, I do believe it was a win. It's all part of the learning experience. Good knowledge to be had and money to be made. Keep doin' the thing Thub.
I admire your hard work and tenacity.
It's aluminum!! Lol. I'm a small time scraper, done it my whole life. Right now I have a bucket in the kitchen for any aluminum that makes it's way in. Take out containers, cans with no.5¢ mark, used foil wrap after it's been washed off course, and the little pieces that come with chocolates 🙋😺👍 my son is 4 and says aluminum in the most amazingly beautiful way when he puts any in the bucket....💖☮😎
TheSkinnyAdventure should save it and take it in once a year before christmas! massive savings
In our neck of the woods- yards will not take them unless they are cut in half for safety reasons! Another hint- use a chop saw or even a metal blade on a skillsaw will work much better and use less blades saving you even more money and time!
Knowing is half the battle and now you know. Yo Joe!!!
A horizontal bandsaw would have been a nice luxury for this project
SUPER awesome green shoes! :-)
Awesome! Checking out the new video and drinking a few with the women. Hope you get a huge amount of new subs this year Thub! Watching from Newfoundland.
Hey man thanks a LOT for all your videos helped me so much on my scrapping adventures !!!!!!!!
I’m having a great time making them, so thanks for watching! Wish you all the best on your adventures 😊
Awesome Adventure 👍👍
Definitely a win. Good info.
I've been a scrapper for a few years and have found a few points to mention. 1) if you use the same scrap yard all the time they get to know you and often give deals and in situations like this won't require you to split them. (The usual reason they make you cut them is because some people "cheat" and fill them or partially fill them with other stuff to add weigt). 2) cutting wheels @ $2.50 each tend to last longer than the $5.00 for 5 from say like Harbor Freight.
you are a true crumbsnatcha! excellent video
Hey thub what ya need is a metal band saw either a portable or find a machine shop with a saw it can be clamped down and cut got one in my shop we can prob cut through one of those in like 2-3 min
Yes!!
Time learning is never wasted.
True. I got to play dress-up and make a cool thumbnail so it was worth it in that regard too! At least now I know where to bring them without spending all that time splitting them 👍
You might try a metal cutting diamond blade for side grinder, cost more, but will be much cheaper for the amount of cutting you can do. Diamond blade cuts much faster also, diameter doesn't decrease with each cut, and thinner cut, removing less material. Once you use diamond you won't go back to abrasive blades.
Gosh---that's alot of work...beats having a cranky micromanaging boss.."OKEY DOKEY!" lol..
impressive thumbnail thubprint thumbs up
Yards here in Ireland won't take them always getting them and I have to cut them up so they take them great video
great vlog . I always have a problem with the grinder wheels when it comes to aluminum. I appreciate the info and I'm going to give your way a try. thank you
I later learned that a wood blade on a chop saw is the way to go, 100%. Just be sure to clamp it down real good!
Buy he more expensive ones. They last longer and cut better than the cheap ones. Note, let the wheel do the cutting, don't press them too hard or bounce them
yeah I was thinking about trying that with copper windings in bigger electric motors because I was having the same problem. thanks for the advice.
@@andrewgould1876 on electric motors, put them in a vise, cut one side of the windings, then pry out the other half. That's the easiest way.
thank you. this is why the youtube community is such a great place.
The thubbb!!!!
You can get aluminum cutting wheels for the grinder. Really helps make quick work of the dismantling process. You could try using a ratchet strap to secure the cylinders or build a jig with some plumbing strapping to hold them steady. Also a v block might work good.
Also helps to only use the disk from 1 to 5 oclock on the disk.
If he had a guard on it, that would have been better, also. Nothing like kickback or a blown disk in the face.
I make bells out of them. Seince they want then cut anyway it made more seince to me plus i get about 30 bucks a bell
Dude ! Buy a big band saw . I’ve been using it to cut Motor windings off . Funny you mentioned the band saw as I was typing this . Take a skill saw to theM tanks not an abrasive cutting wheel . Carbide tipped will cut aluminum like butter
I was just using an old wood blade I didn’t care about, but for sure I’d love to try the carbide tip!
Ugh I learned this lesson with air compressor tanks.
Thub!
🤗
I've been wondering about these. I have a bunch of clean oxygen tanks. Cutting them in half won't be a issue. I just haven't asked the yards around here about them because I just didn't know what to ask.
About de grinder. I use an air grinder. It dont overheatand less kick when it jams so less danger. I have an 80 gallon 16 fcm. If it can help.
A metel Dimond wheel will lasr longer but you need more finesse because they will bind in sted of breaking .
Did you check with the other yards regarding cutting them in half? A yard I deal with wants the brass out of the top and holes drilled in the bottom of propane cylinders otherwise they don't pay for them, maybe your cylinders would be the same? Good video.
I cant tell if he's joking or if he's serious when he says -3 is a decent temperature
-3 is gorgeous! Windows open and sunglasses on!
la la la dont hurt any one
I have cut cylinders in two on my power hacksaw, takes a couple minutes for each but you can leave it running, but buying a half ton of machine for just that would be a bit much.
You should consider investing in a harbor freight hand-held band saw.
Plasma baby.
Is that price after you deducted the price of the discs used to Process them
dam trust ever i get dirty aluminum because of small layer like that of weighless fiberglass will never go back to that scrapyard
this looked clean to me at start of the video
100%sure i would get clean for it
and probably would get even better price cause more then 500lbs
wow EVEN HAD TO CUT THEM IN HALF WOW
but 65cent is lot more i would have had
probably mor 40
use a bandsaw to cut them in half..get a harbor freight one cheap and good
+thubprint somehow, you need to get a metal bandsaw.
Just as a side note, the cylinders are only certified for 15 years use, along with hydrostatic testing every 5 years. At the end of 15 years, they are no longer authorized as pressurized cylinders in the SCBA. There is a sticker on it showing the date manufactured to prevent cheating even.
Is there any money in scrapping large 300 series helium gas cylinders. Got a call from my post and they have 8 of them .
Earlyyy
Finish wood blades work on aluminum. Kinda sketchy to cut a cylinder like that in a chop saw..lol
That's what I did today with the rest of them! Used a pair of ratchet straps to clamp them. Blew the breaker a bunch of times though.
@@thubprint geezzzz. Its still sketchy af.lol

Just wondering, how far is your commute to the scrap yards? I feel lucky that mine is only 10 minutes away. Also I am very jealous that you get cash for plastic bottles.
Chris Rhoads well we have 8 of them in town so I definitely have options haha! My favourite one is about a 20 min drive away. And yes, the plastic deposits sure do help!
@@thubprint That's not too bad. There is plastic everywhere here. I recycle it but wish I could cash it in. Thanks for the reply!
I asume that they want them split is to prove their not pressurized??? Wonder if you could drill a hole in them and do the same thing???
Man hammer lol
Use a quickie saw lmao
Where do you sell all your scrap metal
You mean in Calgary? My favorite place for most stuff is barewirerecycling, but if you meant in general you just have to find a scrapyard. I did a breakdown of all the places in Calgary, as an example of why it pays to call around: ruclips.net/video/7drXorYhRFY/видео.html
your poor car's suspension! Mine doesnt suffer as much but I do a lot of books so it will def takes some wear
65c on the high end? And I thought 55c for beer cans was bad.....
The same as propane tanks, they want them cut open!!!!
dood that son agnenda suicide THX its now in my personal playlist
Heck yeah bud! The faint was my JAM back in high school. Sometimes questionable subject matter, but good vibes haha :)
Creating a process always takes longer than the final streamlined process. If you ever get something similar you'll know how to zip through it for a much better dollar per hour.
Good thing my scrapyard is way cooler. With any pressurised containers the top needs to be off. That's it.
I should of waited so it's same there
Forgive my ignorance, but could you have used a torch to cut those tanks in half?
Totally, they were aluminium so a cutting torch probably would have gone through real quick. I don’t own one though.
Not shown: me finding a scrapyard later that didn’t need them cut because the hole in the top was good enough for them!
Skill saw with a metal cutting blade would've been quicker.
Where the heck are you from?
He's in Canada
bought a truck or borrowed?
That is a good haul. Please secure all material that you plan to use an angle grinder on...and put a guard on it. ✌️
Aluminum down big time right now
I made this comment before watching. I took a load of clean aluminum yesterday here only one scrap yard.....24 cents per pound here
Recon took whole cyclinders from me.
To me not worth fibreglass dust everywhere. Maybe outside but not in.
have you tried to just smach it with a sledge hammer ??for the rest of bubble one
maybe will shatter and scrap yard maybe will take them with a big hole
honnestly that realy sux for my side of view sorry
not the work you did but price you got
Hi. Babe. 😎😍😍😍😍
C'mon Thub, you know you have to drill holes ,or cut in half any metal tank that held anything explosive ,or flammable...
duud ur camera is loosin more pixels one was gone now u hav 3
Really? I hadn't even noticed, I'll have to check my footie
yo stop using the carbon dioxide cut off blades get a good $25 4.5" 5.0" off amazon and it would still be good when you need a junked blade after all the cut s made in all 54 with aluminum just use a fine tooth thin kurf 4.5" blade for your grinder out blade protector on if it's off
Dude pick up some ear plugs...
Having them doesn't mean they get used, haha! I actually have these great over-ear industrial ones which I did start using today when cutting through the round bottom cylinders.
You should be protecting your ears as well, just a friendly advice
(…...WHAT...… :)
Rip headphone users 😣
I’ve gotten better at audio levels since! 😆
thub, you're a machine. $60 for 5 hrs of work or $60 for 5 hrs of hobby. Could be doing worse things that pay $0
get a hair cut fruit
