Like most fine comedy, "I Love Lucy" was funny because it touched on real-life problems and concerns. Which of us hasn't had a friend or relative whose idea of gift-giving is to get us something that the giver feels we SHOULD want, rather than anything we DO want? ("Frasier" exploited this idea to even better effect; one year he got his beer-and-sports father a silken English dressing gown for Christmas. Finally, in one episode, he said ruefully, "You know, Niles, I'm going to approach this Christmas differently, and get people things that THEY want." For him, this qualified as a revelation!). It's also implicitly sad that neither Fred nor Lucy -- the two people who should know Ethel better than anyone else in the world -- can "read" her well enough to get her something she'd actually like. Between Fred's cheapness and Lucy's star-struck attraction to anything that suggests the high life ("smart dinner parties") to which she aspires, poor Ethel never stood a chance.
They were called that because a woman could wear them while riding a bike without the pant legs getting caught in the chain (a very genuine hazard back in the day!) I wore pedal pushers/capri pants every summer for years so that I could do my paper route deliveries without getting caught in the bike chains.
Lol "Bazaar" vs. "bizarre." Lucy's right tho. They are chic if you style them right. The thing is, she wasn't thinking of Ethel's taste, which is more practical and down to earth.
the writers are fantastic and that peerless cast: they are such great actors, not just in their reading of lines, look at the way they use their hands, their bodies, their faces in awe
Oh, sure, perhaps cute for Lucy - but not for Ethel. That's the beauty of the whole premise - Lucy makes the classic mistake of getting something SHE would want, not for a second considering what Ethel would want and what she would actually wear!
@@Gary_Jaffe I still think with a piece like that, wearing the rest of what Lucy described would be too much. I’d go with a matte black short capelet, copper hoop earrings and red stiletto heels.

Whoever was lucky enough to film from the audi THANKS FOR THE FOOTAGE!
My mother called this style of pants ‘pedal pushers’. Lol
They were called that because a woman could wear them while riding a bike without the pant legs getting caught in the chain (a very genuine hazard back in the day!) I wore pedal pushers/capri pants every summer for years so that I could do my paper route deliveries without getting caught in the bike chains.
I still call the pedal pushers

I saw them sellling pedal pushers on QVC or HSN not long ago.
Lucy bought those checkerboard britches at Phipps Department Store. In this case, definitely “Phipps are a great big bunch of gyps!”
Lol "Bazaar" vs. "bizarre." Lucy's right tho. They are chic if you style them right. The thing is, she wasn't thinking of Ethel's taste, which is more practical and down to earth.
love this part...and then....the OVER THE teacups scenes 😢😢😢😭😭😭😭😂
What the Beatles were to rock, I love Lucy was to sitcoms: they set the standard.
Sure did (on both counts).
Well said and 1,000% agree!
Brilliant actresses, brilliant writers. I too would rather have a toaster than those hostess pants.
I love this episode of those pants. I sure liked Ethel the way she acted....talking bratty and being so unthankful for those funny looking pants.
the writers are fantastic and that peerless cast: they are such great actors, not just in their reading of lines, look at the way they use their hands, their bodies, their faces in awe
"I was wondering what to wear to all those smart dinner parties that I give"😂😅😆🤣
"Then you're all set"
"For what,Halloween?" 😅😆
Those hostess pants were badass.
Funny episode. The ending scene is hilarious. Both at a play with Ricky and Fred fighting over the arm rest.
Right on ! And Ethel and Lucy fighting over the binoculars !
Vivian Vance is brilliant in this scene.
Oh I was wondering what to wear to all those smart dinner parties I gave.🤣
Ha ! One of Mrs Mertz's best retorts !! :-)
Some of best ensembles include a performer from stage, movies, TV and a novice
1:43 it’s funny Lucy describing a full outfit for Ethel to wear while Vivian Vance couldn’t have worn it on the show contractually.
The scene at the play was a winner. They cried and became friends. I could use an old style toaster.
You speak the truth Kemo Sabe ! And I can even remember the name of the play they go see: "Over the Teacups" ! :-)
A toaster is better for a Christmas present than a birthday present.
" He's done it again".
I'm with Ethel. I just wanted a vacuum cleaner for my birthday lol If I wanted hideous pants I'd buy them myself.
Lucy: You get a top...a blouse and a belt with the pants and you are set.
Ethel: For what ? Halloween 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😆😁
Am I tripping because I’ve always thought those pants looked nice? 🤔 👖
They’re gorgeous. They’ll just not some Ethel would ever wear. She wasn’t stylish, she was practical.
Damnit I’m with Lucy I think the pants are kind of cute
Same!
I believe this is one time when Vivian had one funny line after another in succession.
This makes me laugh each time i see it...hilarious!!
Well Fred told me that but I couldn't believe you could be that dull!
I wouldn't mind getting a toaster for my birthday. I've seen some $100 toasters in stores and wouldn't mind having a four-slice from Cuisinart or KitchenAid. Of course 1950s toasters were probably crap by comparison and probably still had cloth cords. Seen some of those at estate sales.
wouldnt mind a decent toaster!!
Love the party pants. Adorable.
one of my favorite episodes...hilarious yet try to keep eyes dry as they watch over the teacups😢🖒
This episode is my personal favorite
Harper's Bazaar, they certainly are *bizarre!* Man, even watching this as a very young boy back in the early 80's the line sticks around.
This is one of my favourite episodes.
Ethel’s laugh is catchy!
As I do when I take off my hat, you make a good point !! :-)
Classic show.
I read somewhere that Fred and Ethel’s apartment is also Lucy and Ricky’s bedroom.
I don't like I love Lucy in color. I prefer the original black and white shows. Best show ever.
well...Brent.. I'm not sure there ever WERE any I Love Lucy episodes in color, at least not during the original run of the show. Are you sure you're not thinking about Lucille Ball's next series called "The Lucy Show"? It ran from 1962 to 1968 and many of those were in color.

Well, they're most likely talking about the colorized episodes of I Love Lucy that are out now, of course not the original run. They've shown them on CBS for Christmas, and are on DVD Boxsets.
