This song will forever be imprinted in me as the quintessential definition of horror. Not because of it inducing an extreme sense of anxiety or panic, but more in due to being like an unsettling calm before the great storm. Like a foreboding omen of the unimaginable things to come. A melancholy thorn lodged between hope and hopelessness.
I, ll never forget the first time I hear this and James start tellin about his dead wife letter I thot this game is very emotional to be a horror game This game touched me so bad.
This game is more than just a game, I dont know if I can explain it. It helped me in life in some way and I am grateful for that and will always remember it.
I still think that Akira Yamaoka's composition really adds to the feeling of Silent Hill not being a place but a state of mind. This was James', this is as optimistic as he could get, it sounds for a brief moment it'll be happy but then sinks down towards despair once again. While theme of Laura is very joyous, whimsical and easy to breath. Everyone else was in their personal hell but in Laura's case, she was in her own Wonderland. And for all we know, the town is actually what's keeping her safe.

Perfect quality, thank you for uploading this! Boy whenever I get lost in this song I get a lump in my throat and can start to tear up. I really feel for James, we all know how loss can feel, and it feels exactly like this. Nostalgic and lonely. Nostalgic because of all the best things happened back in the day, and lonely because it will never come back. But this is just the beginning of the game, which is even sadder. After this we embark on James’ journey to Silent Hill. It truly displays how desperate he is to find Mary and to feel good again. I can understand the desperation, but I could never believe a letter like his. But he is so desperate that he chooses believe. Because of this the In Water ending to me seems like the “best” ending. Because otherwise he is gonna keep reliving the same nightmare again and again. With grief and guilt like this he will never find peace. James deserves resting in peace.
Every ending has something going for it. In _Leave_ he makes peace with Mary's passing. There's a chance also that he adopts Laura. In _Maria_ he takes a second chance with her, although that probably won't last either, since she's obviously ill too. _In water_ is his idea of redemption, I guess. _Rebirth_ & 2 secret joke endings can be disregarded.
@@grim_2000I don’t think rebirth can be disregarded. The creators did say there is no specific canon ending. That said, you do need to replay to get rebirth so it’s not possible to get it on the first run. This means that it may not be canon either way.
Now that we have a remake on the way, I've never felt my Silent Hill phase return so hard! Edit from the future: The excitement has turn to severe worry.

Amazing and Nostalgic Atmospheric Soundtrack Ambience... 🎶☯️🎶 The reason why Silent Hill 2 it became a classic is because eventually people began to see how unique, eerie, melancholic and authentic the game's atmosphere it really is, and took the time to enjoy its deeply thoughtful narrative and symbolism. To this day it’s by far one of, if not the most mature examination of grief, sexual trauma, suicide, and morality all combined. It’s an intelligent game that does not hold anyone’s hand and comes at the player with utmost confidence in itself. It’s fantastic stuff. The rest of the original 4 are great in their own right and have their own well written stories, but they don’t hold the same emotional weight to them. I think SH2’s maturity by comparison is something that a lot of people are drawn to. ☯️

***Spoiler*** It’s been confirmed by Masahiro Ito (Art Director on SH2) that Mary’s body is in fact in the backseat of James’ car. You cannot see her body in game due to James’ psychotic break shortly after killing her which leads to him arriving at Silent Hill. James was intending to commit suicide. Therefore, the In Water ending being the most appropriate for the story.
