For sure, I always liked the older Grand Theft Autos because of that. More emphasis on game art so less on technology and graphics. Oh god I miss PS2/PS1 and even PS3 eras. Now it's just ultra consumer capitalist shit. Back then, video games were for nerds and outcasts, now it's more superficial.
Because 90% of games are cinematic movie garbage games mostly from the west these type of games were made with love, special effects and movements you appreciate every detail the jump from PS1 to PS2 was something you had to experience and happy i did.

Musically speaking, he was inspired by 90s Trip-Hop, which has inspired modern day 2010-20s "lofi hiphop/chillhop", although the chords are more in the minor. However, his darker in-game music was inspired by Industrial(dark ambient, death industrial) style of music.
Its music draws that fine line between disturbing and relaxing, which is in my opinion what makes the original soundtrack so astonishing. As a metalhead, I have nothing against Korn's song for downpour, but it just lacks what Akira's work delivered.

My dad used to play Silent Hill games since I was 2 (basically when Silent Hill 2 came out), and till I was 6 I still have small memories from when I was next to him and he was playing it. Then at 11 I played it myself for the first time, and let me tell you, this game became my escape from all the hard stuff I was going through in life till this day😭. Even now that my dad’s not around that much, I’m thankful he introduced me to some of the most amazing things that I enjoy even now at 21... Thanks dad, hope we’ll meet again someday and play Silent Hill 2 together like the old times.
Just remembered that Silent Hill 2 came out in 2001, and Silent Hill 3 came out in 2003, so I kinda mixed up the dates. I was 2 in 2003, but my dad loved to play Silent Hill 2 the most around that time. I know that it doesn’t matter, just wanted to correct myself :))
I was around 8 years old and i used to chill on the couch watching my bigger brother playing silent hill 1 & 2, when it was still day outside we used to close all the window shatters in order to block all the sunlight coming in the house and we were sitting in complete darkness playing this masterpiece of a series.
I suffer from severe anxiety and early stages of depression. Every now and then, when my crisis rises and I lost track of my own mind, I always come back here. This video became my safe harbor where I can breathe peacefully and regain the rhythm of my heartbeat. If the one good person who made it ever read my comment, thanks buddy. And that's no empty BS platitude; I know only too well the living hell that is SGAD including the hard fact that those who've never experienced it can't truly understand, how deeply f-cked up it is making the experience extra-lonely and therefore more harrowing. So if this music helps in even the slightest way then that's fully Kool and the Gang. My preference is for the most chill possible tracks, those w/little to no chance of evoking negative mood, affect or emotion (i.e. anxiety) such as some stuff in this mix including "Heaven's Night" and any SH or Fallout music that's fully ambient in a non-fear-evoking way (like "Casual Background", "Riverside Hotel Ambiance" and so on) or possesses soothing melodic, tonal, sustain and other qualities (e.g. "End of Small Sanctuary). Btw, "End of Small Sanctuary" owes no small debt of inspiration to the guitar interlude sounds in David McCallum's "The Edge" (the opening sequence of which famously served as the basis for Dr. Dre's 2000 hit "The Next episode"). While "The Edge" isn't a pure ambient track, it's def low-fi progressive (for the time) jazz/thematic music that's at least semi-ambient and worth a listen if you're not already familiar. And when the guitar interlude plays you'll be hard-pressed to deny that Yamaoka was a fan. But, yeah: severe anxiety and related disorders like PTSD suck in the worst way imaginable. So seriously: good luck because it's not an easy road to be stuck on and can be so bad that in relative comparison the dangers one faces in games like SH would be preferable because at least then you have reason to experience anxiety whereas with any severe anxiety disorder one experiences fear in all its form often with no cause and as an added detriment all the sh-t one does need to worry about becomes frequently overwhelming. As Frank Herbert wrote in DUNE, "Fear is the mind-killer" and once one comes down with SGAD or a related diagnosis the meaning those words represent become quite salient. Like in a "It's funny because it's true" way but more like "It's soul-crushing because it's true".

I remember being so scared late one night while playing that I had to dash to the kitchen, fearful that one of the fleshy straight jacket monsters would appear at any moment. More than the scares, though, was how the game played a part in shaping how I saw the world around me, how I myself thought. Its melancholy was like a mirror to my childhood depression and isolation. It was a safe way to explore the ideas of guilt, our inner demons, and how they manifest in our thoughts and actions. In conversations with high school friends, it taught me about skillful writing, symbolism, and crafting naratives that invite thought and self-reflection. The music is a familiar blanket to wrap up in when the depression, anxiety, and trauma of my life intrudes again. I came back to listen again because as I sat in bad, just diagnosed with a new illness and an uncertain future, the words of Mary's letter echoed in my mind. "In my restless dreams, I see that town. Silent Hill." As I dream of a carefree youth tainted by the rose tinted glasses of time, ever at my periphery are the crawling horrors of all that I have endured, all of my guilt, and the fear of falling back into the darkness.

I used to be addicted to the vibe of Silent Hill when I was a kid, and now growing old and looking at the past the game remains relevant. Its connection to karma and manifestations of our pain we live, and living ego death really is created in this game threw its beauty and horror with the bipolarity of existence, where dreams are made in a nightmare without seeing we are blind to ourselves always looking for something that we can never embody making our own hells.

The original 4 Silent Hill games created by Team Silent are nothing short but legendary landmarks in survival horror games, hell in horror games as a whole. Akira Yamaoka’s music also brings those games to life with scary but also calming tunes!
I have played all the games in this series. They are not hell. They are too light. When I was 9 years old, I got acquainted with the first game in the series and I wasn’t scared. People who think the Silent Hill and RE series are scary are simply easily impressionable.

Smoke from the Canadian wildfires has been drifting into my town the last couple days. This has never happened here before - but it will happen more and more. There’s this pallid, ghostly mask to everything outside, and it’s much denser and more perpetual than fog. I’m moving away permanently in a couple weeks, so I’ve been walking around familiar spots from my childhood listening to this soundtrack. The smoke and the lack of people (who are staying inside due to the smoke) have made it feel like some abandoned and alien place.
This is both sad and beautiful. I also see smoke from forest fires over the city almost every summer and it reminds me how much I want to get out of this place where no one cares about anything. One day I probably will

I came back to listen again because as I sat in bad, just diagnosed with a new illness and an uncertain future, the words of Mary's letter echoed in my mind. "In my restless dreams, I see that town. Silent Hill." As I dream of a carefree youth tainted by the rose tinted glasses of time, ever at my periphery are the crawling horrors of all that I have endured, all of my guilt, and the fear of falling back into the darkness.

This playlist deep af. I have played a load of hours across a load of Silent Hill games and watched tons of lore but not completed any yet. Done tens of hours of painting while playing this, while the sun came up and went down, usually in good moods but once did cry, listened to this with rain outside and just had to come back and download it after losing all music and wondering if the playlist was taken down, how sad that would be

I have been listening to this playlist for two years, it is my friend to do my homework.
Smoke from the Canadian wildfires has been drifting into my town the last couple days. This has never happened here before - but it will happen more and more. There’s this pallid, ghostly mask to everything outside, and it’s much denser and more perpetual than fog. I’m moving away permanently in a couple weeks, so I’ve been walking around familiar spots from my childhood listening to this soundtrack. The smoke and the lack of people (who are staying inside due to the smoke) have made it feel like some abandoned and alien place.
This is both sad and beautiful. I also see smoke from forest fires over the city almost every summer and it reminds me how much I want to get out of this place where no one cares about anything. One day I probably will
