Totally agree with this take. I played a bit of the opening while super high last week really late and it was such a vibe. I literally walked the entire forest trail and soaked in the atmosphere unlike any other time even though I’ve played this game like 20 times.
Now if only this had the sound effects of some random beast stomping around and moving through bushes, like you hear in the game. I can't imagine how that must feel.

I used to live near the Third Battle of Winchester trail, which had both forest trails and open ones. There were entrances all over the place in the neighborhood, and me and my partner would go for night walks all the time, which I'm pretty sure was trespassing on closed property lol. Sometimes spooky, but not that spooky at the same time. Anyways, decided to go by myself one night because I was feeling pretty catatonic and thought some fresh air would help. Already pretty low, which just in a way added to it. So for context, the fastest part to the trail from my place in the neighborhood was through someones yard, down this steep hill, and then just this LONG walk beside this fairly big highschool, then back up the hill when you're further down the road, into the woods. Well walking past that school alone gave me huge Silent Hill 1 vibes. I had graduated a year or two prior so I got weird flashes of being back there, too. Like it was 2am, there was definitely nobody in there, the parking lot was completely empty, but some of the lights were on anyways and it made it ominous. When I first stepped into the woods on the trail, the wind was strong enough to make the trees creek like old wooden floor boards (that's exactly what it sounded like actually). This whole song feels like your friend has gone missing and you're searching for him in a forest at night with your old car from the 90's, you're scared that you are going to get lost in that forest, but you have to search for your friend.
This is like looking down a stairway leading into an endless, yawning chasm filled with strange lights and misty shapes. Unmistakably dangerous, but oddly seductive...
It really is seductive! You feel the journey to come in your skin and your guts, mysterious and unnerving... but there's also a faint, alluring itch... you just have to scratch it... That's Silent Hill 2!
This is in my opinion one of the best dark ambient soundscapes I've ever heard, and I don't even have the context of the game as I haven't played it yet
This is one of my most favorite ambient tracks. I don't think it's very scary, I think it is more calming and dark. It has a sense that something inevitable is coming, that you can't truly escape from.
Played through SH2 for the first time a few weeks ago. This piece along with the opening overlooking the lake really stuck with me. It gave me the feeling of mental preparation for a great and daunting undertaking. I played through SH1 the week before this so this ambient track at the start made the build up all the more intense.
I always thought that sound at 3:37 was maybe like the sound of a distant lawn mower. Silent Hill is supposed to be abandoned in the eyes of the protagonist but there are signs its still full of life, like the running chainsaw, the roads, the cars, and this sounds maybe like some kind of large lawn mower.
Lawn mower died and that's its moaning ghost! :) Meanwhile, the lawn mower's spouse enters Silent Hill on the opposite side of town from James, to deal with its dark past...
I remember playing Silent Hill 2 for the first time and hearing this after the introduction cutscene. Going through that forest... that's when I knew I was playing a phenomenal game.
I gotta thank all the people behind both SH2 & SH3. The games inspired me to learn english, write horror stories for my school projects, want to learn photoshop and edit photos with Silent Hillish-themes, learn Premiere Pro and edit videos and later direct my own short movies with friends. And the list goes on. There's so much inspirational things I have to thank these series for. It's so weird to not hear the SFX in the first part of this track. I'm so used to hear the slimy monster noises and footsteps! ^^
Nothing like brainstorming some story ideas listening to this legendary soundtrack by Akira. Even better when there is nearby elevator doors in the building I'm working in that mysterious open and close when no one else is here at 2AM.
Up here, in North Dakota, if it rains, then the next day has these really *INTENSE* fogs, you have about 1-2 feet of visibility, so this, paired with walking in the mornings, is very fitting.
To me this and the 2nd half of "The Marshalling Yard" from the original Resident Evil 2 are the most ominous pieces of music I've ever heard. A complete feeling of isolation; like your the only one alive
This song reminds me of all the repressed thoughts and emotions we have in our heads. The more we try to tune them out, the louder they get until it sounds like 3:37 where we are forced to confront our darkest thoughts.
I remember my first playthrough of this game, just finished Silent Hill 1 and although I enjoyed it, I didn't necessarily get scared of it, then I started up SH2. This section alone uneased me right away. It felt like something was watching me, from the fog. Honestly my biggest regret is not having that experience again, Silent Hill 2 unnerved me in so many ways it was unreal.
This part of the game is very symbolic, at least from what I understand. James is running down this path that seems almost unending, twisting and twirling like a downward spiral. Once you enter, there's no going back; you're past the point of no return. Welcome to Silent Hill.
I think the forest trail is where the player first realizes that something is terribly wrong with this place and the character. It makes us question James and why he hasn’t considered turning back despite there being no sign of his wife other than the letter he got.
The first spot in the game is seriously the most suspicious, I mean who on earth blocks off an entire underpass and not bucks sakes there was a creepy white van, red flags every which way
I haven't played a solid play through of this game in at least 5 years... And yet, I will go to my grave remembering the GENIUS that is this game... This game is like making love to your soulmate. It will never be beaten. Thank you Tainted TownMusic. I had forgotten the haunting sounds of the well...
I took 39 minutes from the beginning to the first save point. Part of that was because this was my first PS2 game and that I’m not very well versed in tank controls and using controllers, so I spent a lot of time just tuning them. But this was also my first horror game. And the sound combined with the fog already had my heart pounding and I immediately wanted to turn off my PC and never look back. There’s such a terrible feeling of uncertainty and dread at what’s to come. I came into this blind, but I knew whatever this town had in store wouldn’t bode well for James. And that’s how I ended walking the entire way to the first save point, before I sucked it up and started to run in short, terrified bursts. Excellent sound design, I see why Yamaoka has solidified himself
Imagine you go to sleep in your bed and you wake up in a fog filled forest all you hear is this music and all you see is woods fog and a path in front of you with a sign next to it that says Silent Hill....
When silence is successfully used to scare you it's often very effective. It has the same feeling as a forest brimming with bird whistles and then turning deadly quiet after the birds notice you. A quiet forest is a dangerous one, you start to think to yourself. There could be a wolf or a bear over that hill who has already heard you and your thumping feet.
By this point, James is just entering the rabbit hole and by the time he reaches the museum stairs, he starts descending into himself. He knows he's at rock-bottom and that's why the second part of the Hotel looks like it's been flooded.
To me, it's outstanding that this wasn't added to the soundtack. It sounds scary and it feels like it's telling a story at the same time, a story of madness
@@TaintedTownMusic really!? I had no idea. Well Akira is wrong, weirdly enough, this one has stuck with me over any other songs he made for the game XD
I question why such important addendums like these get cut from the soundtrack released and wonder if it's because they're short? Doubt it. To me on first playthrough, the ambience and industrial is more important then the rock songs because of it's constant prevalence.
@@TaintedTownMusic Pfffft..... More like too powerful for Akira to be paid for it. No offense at you but it's fustrating when very good omissions occur.
Eerie and Haunting Atmospheric Soundtrack Ambience... 🎶☯️🎶 The reason why Silent Hill 2 it became a classic is because eventually people began to see how unique, eerie, melancholic and authentic the game's atmosphere it really is, and took the time to enjoy its deeply thoughtful narrative and symbolism. To this day it’s by far one of, if not the most mature examination of grief, sexual trauma, suicide, and morality all combined. It’s an intelligent game that does not hold anyone’s hand and comes at the player with utmost confidence in itself. It’s fantastic stuff. The rest of the original 4 are great in their own right and have their own well written stories, but they don’t hold the same emotional weight to them. I think SH2’s maturity by comparison is something that a lot of people are drawn to. ☯️

Lights off,volume max,apoteosic...a masterpiece!!
The entire song is a single note which makes it awesome!
The first spot in the game is seriously the most suspicious, I mean who on earth blocks off an entire underpass and not bucks sakes there was a creepy white van, red flags every which way
Couldn't believe how beautiful the game looked and felt once you were able to control James. Felt so good to play "next-gen" Silent Hill.
whoever disliked this video should perish in the fog of Silent Hill
TaintedTownMusic and be gored by endless hordes of lying figures
There was a troll here. It's gone now.
agree with that
TaintedTownMusic+ It was probably that James guy.
@11121 sup
God, i love this tune. Sooo good!!!

No going back now James..
Tank controls can be turned off in settings change from 2d to 3d mode.
brilliant work
do you all realize that this sped up and pitched up is Black Fairy from the Silent Hill 2 OST . Around the 3:30 mark
3:37 Kind of reminds me of the track "Ashes and Tears"
Imagine you go to sleep in your bed and you wake up in a fog filled forest all you hear is this music and all you see is woods fog and a path in front of you with a sign next to it that says Silent Hill....
Best track to read SCPs with.
it makes a scary story even more terrifying!
When silence is successfully used to scare you it's often very effective. It has the same feeling as a forest brimming with bird whistles and then turning deadly quiet after the birds notice you. A quiet forest is a dangerous one, you start to think to yourself. There could be a wolf or a bear over that hill who has already heard you and your thumping feet.
beautiful ...
I was falling asleep to this song then 03:38 came
By this point, James is just entering the rabbit hole and by the time he reaches the museum stairs, he starts descending into himself. He knows he's at rock-bottom and that's why the second part of the Hotel looks like it's been flooded.
The point of no return
Nothing can surpass Silent Hill 2 PS2 edition
coronavirus impending doom vibes from this
With the COVID-19 outbreak, lot of cities give a SH vibe
4 years ago feels unreal..
The neighborhood I live in has a Silent Hill vibe because when there's fog, the environment is eerie, but also in the night cause it looks creepy
Where do you live at? I wish I could live in places that get a lot of fog and rain and are overall just gloomy. But no, I live in 24/7 sunny Florida.
Sounds a lot like Toluca, Mexico 😂
The music that plays in the glowing red room with the eye portraits in P.T sounds an awful lot like this.
Maybe Akira did that =/
We may never know.
Ludvig Forssell did the music for PT, which sounds like the music that plays in Nowhere from SH1.
*OVERBLOWN STEP SOUND*
DELAYED STEP SOUND NOT COMING FROM YOUR FEET
Love Listening to this
When you're 72 hours into your insomnia binge.
I literally use this to go to sleep… I’m I crazy lol
I use this Playlist while playing DayZ. Fits surprisingly well. Especially this track, where in DayZ it's nothing but zombies and dense forests lol.
There will never be a horror video game like Silent Hill 2…Never.
To me, it's outstanding that this wasn't added to the soundtack.
It sounds scary and it feels like it's telling a story at the same time, a story of madness
Apparently he said it was too simple to be in the official soundtrack, only hyper orchestrated spooky shit. A true chad
@@TaintedTownMusic really!? I had no idea. Well Akira is wrong, weirdly enough, this one has stuck with me over any other songs he made for the game XD
@@theMaxTero it's the most listened track on the channel 👀 dude missed out
@@TaintedTownMusic wow I didn't notice, you're totally right!
I mean, sucks for him but good us xP
Lovely ambiant track. I think part of it was used for the P.T. soundtrack. It sounds similar to the music that plays in the red hallway sequence.
This is further than amazing!
Esto se escucha genial!
This sounds great!
Ça a l'air génial!
The soundtrack to my life
Been looking for this, thanks for the upload!
I played this in my car one night while riding out to the country, needless to say I’ve never driven home so fast.
I can hear a bell or maybe even a buoy very faintly. Genius
3:38 Blank Fairy foreshadowing
Anyone listening to this in 2023??
yy
having a morning walk in foggy Silent Hill.Enjoying the fog lmao
I question why such important addendums like these get cut from the soundtrack released and wonder if it's because they're short? Doubt it. To me on first playthrough, the ambience and industrial is more important then the rock songs because of it's constant prevalence.
Too powerful for direct release
@@TaintedTownMusic Pfffft..... More like too powerful for Akira to be paid for it. No offense at you but it's fustrating when very good omissions occur.
@@NeroAngelo616 completely agree
