I LOVE this podcast. It’s fascinating and entertaining and it must never stop. It’s nice to know that other people obsess over tiny things in movies like magic lightweight coffee cups that never spill despite being waved around in a craze.
Ha. That has always bugged me, too. Why would you spend all that time and money to create a realistic looking set or street scene then have a character buy a coffee, wave the cup around as they talk as if they're holding a car key, then plunk the cup down with a hollow thud? Drives me mad. The Law and Orders are really bad for that. It's as if none of the cast or crew have ever drank a hot beverage from a take out cup before.
I just adore your show. No one else unpacks the cultural entertainment landscape in the way you do. The question from Geoff about empty cups...I felt like I was listening to myself. Every single time the empty cup appears on my screen I am 100% out. Thank you Geoff so much for asking this one.
My bugbear is lamps on in rooms when a character enters a house that we know has previously been empty for hours/ days, and no-one remarks "They must have left suddenly, as they've left all the lights on!" or "It's like Blackpool illuminations in here!".
What a fantastic way to spend an hour :) my only comment is in the "does everyone have a book in them question?". My answer to that is, "Yes - as long as you accept 95% of them will be unreadable crap".
I studied film music and we also did some sound design. I was shocked to find out how well our ears are trained to certain sounds, things you wouldn't even think about. For example, I had to create an ambient noise for an early morning scene in a farm, and I thought "OK, I can just go out and record some birds, bugs, the wind through the trees etc". But it was in the afternoon and very quickly I realised, my recordings sound nothing like early morning. It was obviously the afternoon. Now, if somebody had asked me before, can you differentiate between morning and afternoon bird noises, I would think "No way". Turns out, not only I and everybody else can, but it sounds very unnatural and weird if you use them the other way around.
48:23 - Regarding the coffee cup situation I wish they'd just put a small weight on the base of the cup so that the cup is not so light and that would look somewhat more realiistic.
I remember when I was a child there was a milk bottle for a baby doll that if you tipped it it would look like there was actual liquid sloshing around - if they don’t already movies are in dire need of that tech 😂
Loved the podcast, but just one question. The "movie mistakes" referred to in the headline...does that refer to the glass/mug/suitcase question? I'm guessing it does. And while that discussion about props was a good listen, I finished the pod wondering if I'd missed the bit about "mistakes" 🤦♂

Re editing: there is a story about the film The Eagle Has Landed (1976, about as topical as I’m going to get) that director John Sturges found a loophole in his contract that he didn’t have to be there for the editing and wasn’t. So the finished film was effectively created by editor Anne Coates (Lawrence of Arabia, Elephant Man,etc, although the directors were probably in the room then). But illustrates how infrequently the editor is just left to it.

I would love to hear both of your opinions about an older case but still fascinating of Harper Collins publisher vs the BBC who requested an injunction surrounding the Stig from Top Gear's real identity Ben Collins when he wanted to publish his stories from his amazing career. I find it a particularly weird waste of licence fee payers money in court to protect the anonymity of a character who on the one hand people loved being anonymous but also the driver deserves to be able to write about his time as the Stig as there's some great behind the scenes stories to one of the most successful factual programmes ever made. Ben has a great RUclips channel and has a talent for content creation and presenting so it would have been a real shame for the BBC to have silenced him for the sake of character anonymity.
there was an episode of 'Food Theory' called 'The SECRET Language of Water' they tested the hot and cold water sounds it wasnt just boiling vs cold water. there was some success telling which is hotter just from the sound with only ~5 degrees difference
I love hearing these two’s opinions on stuff because often one of them is politically middle left or middle right and they swap over depending on the subject. They rarely have the same take and create a nuanced discussion without being dishonest or misleading.
Great epsisode as ever. Ive got a question.... Why is there this obssession with the media using socia media posts by the general public to make a story about nothing. I see it all the time. If you use this... Call me Michael... not mumbles ha ha (and you can include that in the question if you want ha ha)
"viewers all have the same issue with x" really makes me annoyed! And it'll just be an article with a few tweets from viewers blowing something out of proportion.
Great hour long episode, thank you. On the subject of hot and cold water being poured. I live in France and wonder if the 93% would be fewer here in France?
It was good with one exception: there are some eastern Americans who say “idear” instead of idea, but most Americans don’t, and folks in California definitely won’t.
@@cipherhex I'm sorry -- and I like Richard very much -- but you are a couple of British people (@cipherhex, @christopherhart2367) congratulating Richard on his American accent, yes? @@SorendeSelbyBowen I'm sorry to say, (not to live up to stereotypes), but you've missed the joke here! Re-listen to what Richard's saying when he's doing the awful accent: 30:50: Getting unearned overly-gushing adoring praise saying something's brilliant when it's not...
EMPTY CUPS! I feel so validated that I'm not alone that it is distracting and takes me out of the scene completely! How hard would it have been to put just water in them? OR stuff the cup with Pla-Do to at least add the proper weight?
I've got some misophonia going on so certain sounds cause an irrational sense of anger in me. For some reason, the sound of hot water being poured is so much more upsetting to me than tempid water. I don't like either sound, but the sound of hot water is so much worse. I am not at all shocked that people can easily tell the difference by sound.
Probably a obscure suggestion but can you cover Korean variety shows. Prime, Netflix, ITV and now the BBC have dabbled with Jinny's Kitchen, Sirens, The Physical 100, The Devil’s Plan, The Masked Singer, I Can See Your Voice and Made in Korea the latest. Would shows with ever changing formats like the glory days of Running Man or Infinity Challenge work in the West? Minus the endless replays Korean PDs love. Also Korean copyright around music use in variety shows is an interesting side topic.
With Richard married to Ingrid and part of the Doctor Who family we want to see him playing an Ice Warrior like Bernard Bresslaw did. A cyberman will also be acceptable
I hate it when people complain about how expensive books are, but then say they haven't been to a library in years! THEY ARE FREE! Most have the latest books or can order them in for a small fee. (But also I don't think that libraries are capitalising on the current financial situation enough and reminding people just what they can get.)
Empty coffee cups has long wound me up to distraction and I think understanding why they're empty (not containing liquid) is pretty straightforward (and if not blindingly obvious then easily explained as you did in this pod cast so thanks for that). But that's not what winds me up about it. It's the lack of acting ability to convey a cup with boiling hot liquid in it. With all the effort actors put into portraying realistic emotions and actions, why do they, almost universally, seem to have zero desire to even bother pretending that fresh cup of coffee has weight to it and must be handled with care, just so it's believable? That's the thing that gets me. It's not just the weight (which is clearly a problem highlighted in some of the clips you showed, which were hilariously bad), it's how the actor takes that first sip. Anyone who routinely drinks hot coffee or tea from those cups knows that first sip is an act of care driven by absolute fear of not knowing exactly how hot the drink is (as the actual heat is insulated by the cup). Why don't actors just... act that? If they're not waving it about as they talk (which is the worst example and makes me wonder if they actually went to any sort of acting school :D) then they're tipping it at their faces as though it's empty, or at the very least, filled with a cold soft drink, convincing me they're drinking anything but a hot drink. Also... if I was a production designer, I'd just have the cups be filled with something solid if actors can't simulate the weight themselves. Then all that's left is for the actors to learn the basics of acting so they're not throwing that boiling hot liquid at their faces like it's cold milk. But I guess no one thinks this is important (I think it is :D) Occasionally, you do see an actor do this right (and I don't think the cups have liquid in them, ever... it makes sense that they don't). If I was an actor, this would be the one thing I'd add to my resume at the top: Can actually act drinking hot coffee convincingly. I may not be an expert at acting but I am at drinking coffee from those cups and I'm 100% sure I could do this :D
A note to American viewers and @TheRestIsEntertainment : public lending right (the system by which authors are paid when their books are borrowed from libraries) doesn't exist in the US. It is a feature of libraries in the UK and several dozen other countries, including most other Anglophone countries where I assume most of this channel's viewers are from, but it's far from universal yet. Authors get royalties when they sell books to American libraries, as they do with any other sales, but it's a one-time payment. There is a movement to get public lending enacted in the US, but even if we had the political will, it's a complicated issue that would take a lot of time to implement, so I'm not holding my breath. In the meantime, wherever you are, use and support your local library, and buy from authors you want to support as you are able.
The boxing thing is ideal for streaming services because they rely on gimmicks and people binging the new shiny to sell subscriptions rather than putting out quality content that will keep those subs running concurrently. Very little longevity in modern shows and those that do have the direction hijacked to maximise the audience rather than building something worth watching. The concept of ever decreasing sequels rules streaming.
Listening to this a while after broadcast but the day after the news broke about Liam Payne's death. I was astonished to see that the BBC had a fast turn around documentary about Liam Payne's life showing in the evening of the same day. I know that obits are pre-prepared and held on file for a lot of people, but Liam was 31 young and healthy. What's happened here? are we seeing a new low in the 'fast turn around' area?
I had no idea the cup thing was a thing. I never drink from paper cups, so not in a million years would I have noticed. But, film makers could easily fix that by putting a bit of dry sand or clay in the cups to match the mass of water.

Don't get me wrong, I love the show and more content is great. I think it just could have been signposted in some way, as I now don't know where to go for the actual full podcast. And I would rather not have to listen to it in more than one place to get it all, especially as there is overlap.
@@EddiearchI think they are trialling combining the main podcast and the Q and A podcast into 1 video
Any meeting in the American educational system has two goals:
1. To waste my time as a teacher
2. See goal #1
Same in the UK!
From what I hear, it's the same thing in Canada.
I get why they can’t have liquid inside, but coffee cups should be slightly weighted so it’s not so obvious when the actors pick them up
Whose job is that ? How much does it cost the company to do just that one thing ? Actors will complain about the fake coffee just as much as they complain about having to eat
The only problem I have with this podcast : I prefer the longer format but I love getting 2 episodes per week 🤷🏻♀️ you are great!
32:20 I'm positive this bit is about Noel Edmunds
I doubt it. I've heard Richard talk about Noel before and he said the best thing about him was that he had a producer's mind.
Isn't the new apple macbooks, the sound is coming from the MacBook, the keyboard isn't actually making that sound, the Mac is digitally creating that sound to give the feedback that you are typing.
I work for a library and I see a Richard Osman book every single day! Also I can confirm you can get free access to magazines music and newspapers with a library card! Also I would never yell at anyone for typing loudly!
Ben has a great RUclips channel and has a talent for content creation and presenting so it would have been a real shame for the BBC to have silenced him for the sake of character anonymity.
there was an episode of 'Food Theory' called 'The SECRET Language of Water'
they tested the hot and cold water sounds
it wasnt just boiling vs cold water. there was some success telling which is hotter just from the sound with only ~5 degrees difference
The hot water cold water thing was on QI when Stephen fry was doing it and it's true x

"Fans are saying...", "People are outraged..." etc etc and it seems that it's based on maybe a few posts that have been shared rather than any actual reporting of anything of substance.
I was thinking if Canadians (me) would hear the difference between the boiling and cold water too ….
That American accent Richard! Brilliant!
That is *the* best American accent I've ever heard!!!!!!!!!
Because Richard's American accent is awful, half-British, half-fake-American, and none American. Hugh Laurie is the best American accent from a Brit that I've heard.
@@cipherhex Oh Americans, they don't get sUbTLetY!
excellent
They did the sound of pouring boiling water and cold water on an episode of QI 🙂
Levels of drink in glasses changing magically onscreen .
My son’s art teacher once told me that there is no such thing as talent. Just dedication training and practice
Famously any meeting that can be covered in an email is a waste of time.
An hour long!! Yes!!!
I'm surprised that Richard didn't know that most of us can tell whether it's hot or cold water being poured. I thought that was perfectly normal.
aaaaw..i miss cheques..was something so grownup about writing and signing a cheque...
“Unboxing videos” 😂
Luv it!😊
I love this show it's the first time i've seen it.
But I guess no one thinks this is important (I think it is :D)
Occasionally, you do see an actor do this right (and I don't think the cups have liquid in them, ever... it makes sense that they don't).

MPs are not allowed laptops in the chamber because of the typing noise, iPads are permitted though.
Michael Spicer must be the source of the recent empty cup furore
The boxing thing is ideal for streaming services because they rely on gimmicks and people binging the new shiny to sell subscriptions rather than putting out quality content that will keep those subs running concurrently. Very little longevity in modern shows and those that do have the direction hijacked to maximise the audience rather than building something worth watching. The concept of ever decreasing sequels rules streaming.
Adam Savage (Mythbusters, prop creator) has said that actors are brutal on any prop. They manage to break steel swords.
Was the fyre fest documentary on Netflix too late? I felt I didn't care by the time that came out.
So next week we will get a channel 5 documentary on "Where is The Princess of Wales? The Katespiracy" 😅
I hesitate to call boxing a "nonfiction sport" these days.
I had no idea the cup thing was a thing. I never drink from paper cups, so not in a million years would I have noticed. But, film makers could easily fix that by putting a bit of dry sand or clay in the cups to match the mass of water.
This podcast, was its launch or whatever, delayed by covid ?
