I'm a middle aged, centrist dad to two Swifties, but also a bit of music nerd. Taylor's cultural significance is undeniable, predominantly due to her relatable lyrics (imho). However, I wouldn't say she was particularly adventurous musically; yes she has moved from country to singer-songwriter, via pop and folk, but from a musical standpoint the structure and tone - chord progressions, time signatures, etc - remain, in the most part, very similar to what came before, just with slightly different production methods. Taylor doesn't have the technical innovation of, say, Joni Mitchell; nor does she use producers - eg Quincy Jones - that push her music into areas outside of both her comfort zone and those of her fans. That's isn't a criticism - as I said, she is someone soundtracking my daughters' youth and I wouldn't want to undermine their lived experiences. Also she is giving her young listeners a taste of musical genres they can then explore further if they wish to, which is great for less well known musicians. Conversely, one should be cautious about including her among the pantheon of "great artists" - the mark of which being particular songs or albums that are so distinct and innovative that they cause a shift in musical and cultural perspectives. I'm very much on the fence about Ms Swift (centrist dad etc); only time will tell how much impact she will have on future musicians, or if she is just very good at tapping into the Gen Z market. But. like Madonna before her, she is redefining the role of women in positions of power; empowering girls to become successful without losing their feminine identity. Either way, if I hear my daughters singing along to Taylor's music and they're happy, then I'm happy. That to me, and all other parents of Swifties, is the most important thing, so we should be grateful for her efforts.

I love listening to these two. No matter how indifferent I might be about the topic they are discussing (Marvel, Taylor Swift) they have interesting points to make.
Does Taylor Swift really have a significant male following? She appears to be a brilliant role model for young women, but will her music really be listened to in 50 years time?
Taylor swift creates a lot but is it all quality? Richards point about her appealing to an older gent who likes country music or young girls is fair, but there's a large group of people she doesn't appeal to, which I think older artists, not just the Beatles, did. Anyway, if you like her music then good, enjoy it.
Polling is now far more difficult because it is very hard to get anyone to pick up the phone who isn’t a baby boomer. I removed reading out how the NY Times struggled at the last US election - and that was during a pandemic when people were desperate for human contact. It essentially would take them 2 hrs to get one valid non biased response- that’s just not tenable . I never answer a number that isn’t from someone I know, and I am not unique. This makes truly reflective polling nigh on impossible. Other forms of polling (online surveys etc) though are easily manipulated or skewed eg we tend to only vote when we are really disgruntled, so again difficult to trust. Ironic in the age of big data.
Sounds like Taylor Swift’s success turned the conventional wisdom of pop stardom on its head, ie that creating mystery about the artist kept the public interested.
If you think everyone singing every song back to the performer is a rare thing, then u’ve never seen a Garth Brookes gig in Ireland. In fact most gigs I’ve been at here that happens.
Wildly overstating TS's cultural significance. Huge to her audience, and probably also to the shrinking pool of people whose musical tastes are squarely mainstream. But if you're outside of those two groups, and don't have a kid exposing her to you, it's very possible to be completely unaware of her music.
I feel like I'm on another planet when I hear the way they're describing Taylor Swift. She's a successful popstar doing an arena tour who has some very devoted fans. They're talking as if she is the second coming of Jesus
Jeremy Paxman on University Challenge when question was to identify a piece of popular music by an artist who died at 27 years old. Team was played Jimi Hendrix, Voodoo Chile which rhymes with smile. The correct answer was given but rejected by Paxman who said it was Voodoo Chile, rhymes with silly. How was this overlooked, not edited out or not corrected. This made me disproportionately angry. University Challenge is a serious quiz, every point counts and Paxman and production team made an embarrassing schoolboy error and worse, it went to broadcast either ignored or unnoticed. 😂
I disagree with their assessment on Taylor Swift. Yes, she's big, but mega stars back in the day were way more influential than the current ones are. The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Rolling Stones, Madonna, Metallica, etc., had an enormous effect on music as a medium. They had an effect on the genres themselves, subject matter of future songs, or on the way musc is represented (sometimes, on all three). In a sense, they've done more for other people's careers than they have for their own. You can't really say that about Taylor Swift or any of the other modern super stars.
Taylor doesn't have much influence on music, but she has enormous influence on the world. That was their point - you can't view her as simply a music star. She's bigger than that.
I think you're overstating the boomer/GenX music case, and underestimating the newer generations. Yes, the early bands were influential largely *because* they were early. The Beatles were just another (albeit maybe the first) boy band, until Dylan got them to grow up lyrically. Led Zeppelin had a huge influence on music, but that doesn't change the fact that a lot of their music was "influenced" (a less charitable word would be "stolen") from old Black bluesmen. So *EVERYBODY* had an inspiration and influenced others. How do you know what influence Taylor Swift will have? She's already been a boss by taking back control of her music. Business-wise that's huge. Maybe you just need to recognize time has moved on.
@@Hexon66 The influence she's had by taking back her music is that new recording contracts now how much longer exclusivity periods before artists can rerecord their music to make sure nobody can do what she did again. That's certainly an influence, but not really an industry changing one - the industry has instantly taken steps to restore the status quo.
Did these performers improve the economy of the areas where they performed? Boomer here, just wondering if the economic impact was noted ‘back in my day’.
@@TheSuzberry The Beatles entire North American leg of their 1965 tour lasted two weeks and involved 16 shows (several done back to back in the same venue on the same day). There is no way that can have anything like the economic impact of the 66 shows Taylor did in the Americas in 2023. The Beatles largest audience was about 55,000 people. Taylor averaged about 70,000. There really is no comparison.

Sorry Marina... Love the podcast and your writing and I just want to come back week after week.... But, the comment about everyone singing her words back to her... sorry, every person I have seen live, Pinl Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Peter Gabriel, Coldplay, et all, have had all their songs sung back at them too.... And Richard... We've had superstars before.... like The Beatles,,,,, but Taylor is a mono culture and is the music business... Hmm, think back.... The Beatles, CREATED the music business as we know it... BUT this is just my opinion and is not an argument.... just a comment. Honest guv.
"If you can monetize even 15% of our culture." Taylor Swift has so consciously marketed to (monetized) girls and their parents. Not music execs. Not brands. Girls and their parents. She has cut out all the middlemen.
Why when mentioning global super stars like Madonna, and Michael Jackson, why do they act like Elvis didn't exist? He was the Big Bang from which everything else followed.
In regards to Taylor Swift, as Marina pointed out, she manages to capture such a volatile and vulnerable aspect of young people's lives in such an authentic and raw way that people of all ages can relate. My dad is a fan. I don't necessarily find her music uniquely refreshing, but in a world where art can often be deemed mere product, she is a singular generational voice. That's very different from Madonna in my opinion.
Jaffa cake controversy! McVitties went to court to protect the Jaffa Cake. A biscuit attracts vat A cake does not. McVitties were able to proove that like a cake a stale Jaffa Cake becomes hard. A stale biscuit becomes soft and soggy. Therefore a Jaffa cake is a cake not a biscuit
As a TV and entertainment podcast, does doing adverts for networks like SKY impact or bias your coverage in anyway? I just mean with how polemic and cynical the opinions and pundits they platform, are Richard and Marina going to just stay silent about the racist propaganda that is SKY's bread and butter?
I think Rick Beato's take on Taylor Swift was best- to paraphraze- with that much power and influence she could do something incredibly interesting and creative with her music- but she keeps releasing the same dull 4-chord (usually fewer) songs.
When did this become a Taylor swift podcast?! She’s a rich girl who has become richer thanks to social media making a cult around her. She makes music for teenage girls. It’s pop music, she won’t be seen like Bowie in 20 years time she will be seen as a massive pop singer like Madonna.
Her first album was 2006 so I suppose we will find out in two years time 😂😂😂😂 Im 59 and still enjoy listening to her. I also like Bowie, Beatles, Elton John, classical, to name a few - all music can be enjoyed and appreciated by anyone regardless of age. But it’s not often that musicians attracts new listeners rather than just retaining the original fan base reminiscing their past hits.
When is Marina’s friendship with Piers Morgan going to be acknowledged when discussing his many disgusting antics? (Real or contrived) Please note: huge fan of the podcast and Marina’s writing. Just wondering what the etiquette is for discussing these things?
Never, most likely. Hyde is part of the British public school 7% that makes up 90% of the ruling class. She might look angrily at Murdoch but she is part of the problem. There is also no etiquette to speak of because she'd rather point out she saw the Coppola vineyard personally than criticise any of her friends.
Missed opportunity to talk about Taylor Swift's donations to food pantries on every tour stop. With that she's doing more to solve hunger than anyone in political power.
It didn’t actually get a massive number of complaints, as it was on channel four and quite late. It only hit a few thousand, but this was huge for a small comedy show on channel four.
Strangely I don't know any Taylor Swift songs and until recently wouldn't have known what she looked like.......... but I still like her ! I guess that's super-stardom.
I'm in the same boat. I like that Taylor Swift exists, and fills the niche as the BIGGEST STAR IN THE WESTERN WORLD. Rather her than someone more reactionary.
I know what she looks like but don't know a single one of her songs. I'm sure I've heard some of it but couldn't tell you if it was her or not. I can't say that I like her or dislike her, I simply don't care one bit for her. She's nothing more than a carefully manufactured brand to me.
I know this is a me problem, but I don't like people all around me singing. The last time I went to a concert, a person screamed the (wrong) lyrics into my ear the whole time. Off key, slightly flat and loud. If the whole audience does that, then it's just very, very expensive karaoke.
What did you expect? The audience to sing back "O-bla-di, o-bla-da, life goes on... bra" to Paul? Just crank out the pretty melodies, Paul. Maybe the words aren't your thing.

When watching a Saturday Night Entertainment programme and the most famous Dance Group in the UK, if not the world, use a stage to do a "performance" then there will be some, like myself, who look at it differently. According to the Guardian the photograph of Taylor Swift taking the selfie was taken by the Royal photographer and posted by Kensington Palace on Instagram before Taylor Smith posted her selfie in response.

I love listening to these two. No matter how indifferent I might be about the topic they are discussing (Marvel, Taylor Swift) they have interesting points to make.
That was my initial thought as well of the ‘selfie’ -the JOY on the kid’s faces! Dad too. Kind of wonderful
Marina must be used to recceiving complaints, owing to her working for Piers Morgan for ages.
Jaffa cakes are cakes. Legally and literally. Just because they are small doesn’t make them any less of a cake
I just don’t get it about Taylor Swift. The music’s dull as dishwater!!!!!
It was a bit much during her excepting a Grammy to promote a new album. REALLY
Only 2 people listened to the original sach gate? Did I hear that correct?
Hi
Targeted campaigns are valid. People agree with the complaint and put their name it. Price of broadcasting
Sounds like Taylor Swift’s success turned the conventional wisdom of pop stardom on its head, ie that creating mystery about the artist kept the public interested.
But Jaffa Cakes legally are cakes
For Vat reasons.🙄
Is it me or does she have a problem finishing sentences?
If you think everyone singing every song back to the performer is a rare thing, then u’ve never seen a Garth Brookes gig in Ireland. In fact most gigs I’ve been at here that happens.
😆 I'm so ready to fight about Jaffa Cakes
Surely there's a clue in the name!
Wildly overstating TS's cultural significance. Huge to her audience, and probably also to the shrinking pool of people whose musical tastes are squarely mainstream. But if you're outside of those two groups, and don't have a kid exposing her to you, it's very possible to be completely unaware of her music.
So we are going to believe OFCOM, aye right
That tracking stuff sounds incredibly depressing. Art by numbers.
I feel like I'm on another planet when I hear the way they're describing Taylor Swift. She's a successful popstar doing an arena tour who has some very devoted fans. They're talking as if she is the second coming of Jesus
she's much bigger than Jesus

And now I know when the next episode arrives. :)
Taylor swift authentic? The billionaire ex country singer with no musical innovation, not even interestingly dressed and whose music can pass you by (I’m not her regular target audience, for radio I’m R4 &R6). What are her priorities?
I complained to our ABC a few times; namely subtitling and transphobic remarks. Just yesterday for example!
I'm surprised the talking dog got pinged, Hacker and Dodge are both legit.
Absolute insanity and historical revisionism to say Taylor Swift is bigger phenomenon than Michael Jackson. Maybe someday, but not yet at least.
Plot Twist: One of the five options for the Spice Girls was Sharleen Spiteri, because the 100 members of the public were stupid.
New listener/ watcher from South Africa, absolutly love the show! best I've heard in a while!
I had never heard of Inside Out until this podcast, but Amy Poehler is absolutely the perfect casting to play the voice of Joy
Inside Out was a horrible film, and I thought that was the consensus view.
My favourite Swift song is I Fancy A Sausage Roll From the Greggs Down The Road from the album "Times I Used My Jet".
Jaffa cake controversy!
McVitties went to court to protect the Jaffa Cake.
A biscuit attracts vat
A cake does not.
If I had a complaint about Pointless and nobody answered it, would I win Pointless?

Morning!
Good evening from Australia.
I think Rick Beato's take on Taylor Swift was best- to paraphraze- with that much power and influence she could do something incredibly interesting and creative with her music- but she keeps releasing the same dull 4-chord (usually fewer) songs.
mediocrity+mass market+capitalism=$$$$
Voice artistry is important which is why they need to hire actual voice actors and not very average actors.

Big fan of you both, thank you for the great content!
When is Marina’s friendship with Piers Morgan going to be acknowledged when discussing his many disgusting antics? (Real or contrived)
Please note: huge fan of the podcast and Marina’s writing.

He got away with it by disguising himself as a school

"Exactly that" is a favourite of his too.
Beatles fans did not scream back the lyrics, the just screamed.
Gary Lineker said he doesn't get people who don't like sport - ofcom must got a few complaints about that.
That just shows that Lineker isn't very smart then.
@@Elwaves2925 I love watching sport especially the euros and tour de france but about 80% of it live boring, about 15% is interesting and about 5% is exciting
@@nickdaniels5262 I used to follow footie until the early 80's (Spain 82 World Cup to be precise), then the business side started to intrude too much, it became boring and I cut it off completely. Of course, the point is Lineker not understanding that people have differing tastes and interests.

Whilst I didn't complain about the Diversity routine, I was tempted to... To take a man's death and turn it into Saturday Night Entertainment was completely disrespectful!
That's not how I perceived it, and it wasn't their intention either. It was a protest performance, they wanted to show their solidarity for the BLM movement and get people thinking, using their platform (performing on BGT with a huge audience). It was a topic that affected them and they wanted to speak up.
@@sarasate89 I think two things can be correct at the same time. You are correct, that is why they did it and it was explained on the show. I think, though, that things can be perceived in many ways by different people. Watching the video of that man being pinned down, asking for help and ultimately dying was harrowing. When watching a Saturday Night Entertainment programme and the most famous Dance Group in the UK, if not the world, use a stage to do a "performance" then there will be some, like myself, who look at it differently.
And it's a real shame. I used to love Diversity and absolutely loved Flirty Dancing hosted by Ashley Banjo. However, my perception of Diversity after this "Entertainment Routine" has tarnished my view of them and I cannot watch them any longer.
I think it's good, though, to hear others POV's on the situation. Who knows, maybe I'll start watching them again, someday!
@@wscottcrawford I can understand your perspective. Hopefully you can enjoy them again one day.
