  • This is a revised version of a video I posted on April 8, 2015. I try to describe Scart a little more accurately and I also added some Genesis comparison footage:) Original description and links below:
    Watch this in full screen HD if possible! I wanted to find a cost-effective solution to hook up some of my old consoles to my HDTVs. I cover a pretty inexpensive SCART to HDMI converter that I purchased (link to buy down below) to test how much better direct RGB looks compared to Composite & S-Video. I compare game footage from Sega Master System, Super Nintendo and Sega Saturn so you can evaluate yourselves.
    Another thing I forgot to mention, and test for this video, is the headphone audio-out on this converter. It may resolve the audio differences I note in the video, but I'm not sure.
    This article goes WAY more in depth and provides some actual technical knowledge on a vast array of these converters. Mine ranked quite low, so the other options may even turn out better results! Read this before you buy:
    retrogaming.hazard-city.de/
    Here is the link to purchase to converter I use in this video:

    Hey Dave, I was at TooManyGames and we chatted at the Game Sack panel. I ended up getting SCART for my Saturn and got a decent little upscaler, and it worked miracles. SCART is a fantastic method to get these older consoles to look great on modern TVs.

    One thing that I like about S-Video too over Scart is that S-Video has a more secure connection where Scart cables are known to be loose and break easier than S-Video. When buying heavy duty Hi Quality Gold Plated S-Video cables they have no signal loss at all. I used to play most of my consoles via Scart and then convert to HDMI but im no longer a fan of Scart but im a big fan of S-Video. I talked to a lot of Europeans and believe me they have had more problems with those cables than problems here for us with S-Video cables and most people dont know how good the picture can get with good quality S-Video cables being that you have more room for tuning on the TV compared with tuning with RGB Scart. A good Scart is known to have more chances of some type of signal loss compared to a good S-Video cable.

    In Europe we used rgb scart cable so we could play NTSC games in color. Via composite non-PAL games were in black and white. RGB cable fixed that

    SCART isn't a video standard, it's just a variety of connector. RGB is the commonly desired video standard used with SCART, but it also supports composite video, s-video, and sometimes even component (Y/Pb/Pr) connections.
    A very much-hated connector type, with bulky and heavy cables, sensitive to movement etc. In countries where SCART was/is not commonplace, opinions can differ. I'm fond of the standard, New Zealand is very much a PAL region, but we barely even got composite video on many TV sets back in the day due to consumer demands here being much different.
    Thankfully I do own an RGB SCART equipped TV (Bang and Olufsen ME 6000) so until it dies, I'm a happy man.

    • @KayoMichiels
      @KayoMichiels 7 лет назад

      Tell me about it... not to mention that it tends to get loose very fast and you can consider yourself lucky of the connector is decent made.. i once used cheap ones and they desintegrate very easily..

    • @SiriusXAim
      @SiriusXAim 5 лет назад

      @@KayoMichiels And let's not forget that you had to perfectly align your cable with the plug else it would jam. Just like USB, you'd try it one way for 5 minutes, then the other way for 5 minutes, then the first way again for like 2 minutes and then you had it in, all behind your large ass CRT TV and the jungle of AV cables at the back!

      Meh, yall had poor quality SCART then. Here in France it was mandatory to sell tvs with it and they had to be good quality. The design of the connector was, meh. Well its a 70's design. Big and bulky. Never had issues plugging it tho, even as a child. Stereo is good, its the hdmi adaptors that sucks.
      Here it was mandatory until 2014. So you could get brand new HDTV with built in SCART. You got best sound AND picture. Too bad it's PAL and US made games tended to be badly ported for 25fps.. japanese got the best of both world tho

But I don't know what I'm going to do with the Genesis yet. I either have to mod it for s-video, or buy all the stuff for RGB scart.

Then for my 3DO, I have the Japanese variant with the native 240p connected through a Retrotink with S-Video. I swear the 3DO's S-Video is almost as good looking as my other console's with Scart. Good enough that I decided the diminishing returns are too great to have it RGB modded.

    I personally didn't really like SCART early on, that wire is super thick and trying to plug one end in sometimes twisted the other end out, it's somewhat sensitive to movement so it felt like it never really "clicked in", the connector is bulky and needed some force to put in, the metal edges of the connector sometimes got stuck in the socket edges when trying to plug it and you needed to retry it a few times behind a bulky TV...
    It was the standard cable to connect anything to your TV in the 90s and early 2000s in Finland. Then I later discovered Video and S-Video inputs and saw that I didn't really miss out much after all. Later I discovered it was never a thing within north america. I'm a bit conflicted as in one hand I feel like you missed out, but on the other hand you didn't have to deal with trying to connect a 1cm thick spring between your VCR and TV, hoping the thick cable wouldn't move your devices around too much ( yes it did happen with more modern and lighter VCRs ).
    But that's just how I remember it, I'm rather happy with the HDMI nowadays.

      Speaking as someone who was using rgb scart in the 90s theres a huge difference between S Video RGB Scart is far superior on a real tv, giving up audio quality isn't accurate too bear in mind as said convertors are used here.
      I could tell easily the difference over the years even now, S Video is better than composite but far worse than RGB but it depends on cable, tv (and convertor is using one)

      @@Atariatari-ky9te Years ago I tried S Video on many tvs, even with expensive cables, never liked it but my take off is that it was down to the tv as well, I owned some that had a horrible rgb picture and even worse the rgb settings outside of contrast/brightness were locked so you couldn't change the saturation

    • @Atariatari-ky9te

      Yes S-Video gives me more room to make adjustments on my TVs then RGB and after the adjustments S-Video looks better IMO then RGB adjusting. Looking at both with the standard settings RGB looks a little more colorful but when I fine tune both the color actually looks better in S-Video and also when looking at both in motion S -Video looks slightly cleaner IMO. The only thing I can say to be in RGBs favor is that I dont have a TV that has a Scart Input so getting RBG im using converters. Where S-Video im going straight into the TV into a S-Video input. Regardless of how expensive upscalers or converters used I have found that less conversion is best for a cleaner image and some LCD Flatscreens have no noticeable lag and put out a better image in S-Video then RGB with conversion upscaler boxes like the Framemeister and RetroTink. I have a Emerson 40" flatscreen w/ a S-Video port that not only produces a better picture using that S-Video port than using S-Video with the Framemister but also produces a better image when using the Framemeister using RGB Scart. Also there is no noticeable lag when just going straight to the S-Video input from S-Video out from the systems I have tested Saturn, Super Nintendo (1 chip and original) and a modded Sega Genesis. Maybe its the S-Video cord im using but no RGB conversion I have tried has looked better than S-Video with Hi Quality gold plated cable going straight into my Emerson 40" Flatscreen model LCD401EM2F. RGB looks good on it as well but not better than S-video especially after fine tuning them both with the TV (making the RGB conversion look the best) and (making S Video look the best) which S-Video always wins after comparing. This has happened with other TVs I own as well its just that the Emerson beats out all my TV's including my CRT's.

    Haven't dug through the comments, but have you tried a SCART Audio breakout adapter? It sits in between the SCART device and the SCART cable connector and basically intercepts the audio. My general understanding of how most of these video games systems works leads me to believe the audio should be 100% the same over the SCART pins, but due to interference, or conversion, you experienced degraded audio. Let me know how it goes if you get a chance.

    To All,
    I have been going nuts in the past couple of months
    trying to find the ideal RGB SCART cable for the Sega Saturn NA Version.
    Each cable claimed to be the best, yet a loud annoying buzz feedback
    has been coming through on my audio feed. I discovered this feedback
    noise is caused from poor quality cables that do no shield wires. Hence,
    90% of the cables out there. "retro_console_accessories" of EBAY
    sells a RGB SCART cable 10 times thicker than the normal cable for a
    little more cost. Get the shield upgrade charge with this cable. I am
    running Bowers & Wilkins 7.2 Channel Stereo system with a very good
    receiver. I put the volume to max and still zero noise feedback!! The
    picture quality is amazing, colors that are normally deficient are now
    complete, bright and vibrant. If you are serious about retro gaming in
    high quality use a good SCART cable with a HD Upscaler Box.

    I have a S-video switch that i run all my consoles into which seems to be the way to go IF you hate wires and prefer using CRT. As the the sub topic of Saturn, the fella is right, Saturn doesn't improve much. The only benefit for going scart with Saturn is if you want to use a HD tv.
    I have my Genesis/Sega Cd hooked up through Scart to RGB and honestly, my CRT does a better job. My LCDs cant keep up. The image is slightly sharper, but i get lag. I like scanlines coupled with the richness of RGB Scart, so in my opinion, the best option available is S-Video for NES, Snes, N64, Saturn, Ps1 and Dreamcast through a CRT.
    Gamecube $$component$$ (or GC games on Wii using component for 75% less cost)
    Dreamcast VGA through LCD.

      ***** it does have to be official nintendo if you want the best quality picture.
      i've done this with my dreamcast, I got a vga cable for it and the advice that I got from most people was that i should invest in a trusted company that makes really good cables because buying any cheap one will result in a less dynamic picture.

    Just a suggestion. You seemed to talk down the Saturn a little bit in the graphical department. In fact, the Saturn is a 2D power house, while being a 3D power house as well. The console was difficult to code for, otherwise there are games that rival the PS1. Just saying, otherwise great stuff, and thank you.

    Just a heads up, you can get a scart RCA stereo breaker box on the end on your scart cable. I use this with my scart to component on a CRT set up.
    Picture of the box, you can find these on ebay for around 10$ or less.

      Eric Heil alternatively it's pretty easy to solder up left and right audio from the SNES multi-out and make your own RCA jacks on the back or side to get stereo out. They mount pretty well on the back left side.

    the best way to explain RGB vs Composite is like the difference back in the day of playing games at home on a console vs playing them at the arcade. Even older worse looking arcade games look better because of the better video setup and monitors.

    • @rerolledDK
      @rerolledDK 8 лет назад +2

      +PotbellyPunch This is exactly how I started down the path to better connections than composite. I had always wondered why Tekken and Soul Edge looked so much better in the arcade than on my Playstation despite the fact that the arcade versions basically used Playstation hardware. I was blown away when I finally got a s-video cable in 1997. There was the arcade crispness that I was looking for.
      I use RGB now, but going from composite to s-video was the most dramatic leap in quality.

    s video looks a bit better because colors are more subdued giving it a more natural look. but i know ppl tend to like very bright kinda fake colors (like samsung amoled and tv) so to each their own

    The SCART is awesome and all but, if you're like me, you don't really want to play retro games on an HDTV for the same reason that people hated the jump from VHS to DVD at first. Difference in these two comparisons is that the jump from VHS to DVD had a purpose, specifically that I'm trying to reference. With DVD, you had those "black bars" which the purpose was Widescreen format. You saw more picture as was originally intended by the director. With this SCART solution, it still works like you're saying but, if we want the real gaming experience, we're screwed until Samsung, Sony, Vizio, and Panasonic, and NEC all go back to manufacturing 4:3 aspect ratio TVs. I don't know about the rest of you, but I hate those fat chunky black lines on my screen. It just doesn't feel right and I can't find a solution to that so I'm better off using my CRT TV with S-Video and hoping that soon someone manufactures Component cables for the Genesis and such.

      +NeoMahi There are CRT's with Scart inputs on them out there
      Check for a Sony BVM/PVM CRT if you can find one for cheap
      Also check out Phonedork's videos he does a lot of videos on these sorts of topics and they're very informative
      There's also already Component and RGB Calbes for the Genesis out there

      You dont need an SONY BVM or PVM for scart connector. They are amazing monitors, no questions here, but if you want a very good picture (NOT a suberb one like these professional monitors) just get a cheap sony triniton TV from mid to end of 90's with 4:3 screen format. All these TVs have SCART Socket and are great tvs for gaming.
      Just be sure to connect to a SCART port that supports RGB! My TV is SCART port 2. On sony TVs generally have an icon of AV Logo above the scart connector, if the AV Logo have 3 dots above, that port supports RGB.

      Luis Marques BVM/PVM's are the best though and there's many people out there who are dumping them for cheap now

    Ok, I´ll be politically incorrect...when it comes to 8bit & 16bit (mainly 8bit) consoles I prefer the "bluriness" and softness of the composite signal. Dithering and edges look easier on the eye and overall It gives a more "authentic" and "retro" feel to it.

    • @cakestalker
      @cakestalker 8 лет назад

      I would have to agree with you there really. The games weren't designed really to give a pixel-perfect and lossless picture. The dithering (checkerboard effect) makes extra colors blend and is used to make a transparency, so composite usually looks better on 8 and 16-bit systems.

    • @user-kd1ho7gm7i
      @user-kd1ho7gm7i 8 лет назад

      CRTs (PVM monitors are not a chance around here) are also the preferred option (if available and if the room conditions are given), when it comes to actual retro consoles. I guess you might agree with that too.

    Hey I know it is a Scart Svideo video but for the Saturn!
    The Saturn can beat the psx in 3D games but it was so hard to program that no game developer tried it rly. On some Later games you see better 3D as on the PSX but it was way more work and yeah in 3D gameing was the PSX not stronger but better to program! Just saying!

    Go with Scart.
    S-Video cables have died out and none of the EBay sellers bother to make them.
    So you get these outrageous cable prices for SVideo and Component

  • @SiriusXAim

    Scart was good, but ended up being phased out in the 2000's in favor of composite. Scart was complicated to make, and God forbid you had a dirty connector. I remember as a kid fiddling with the damn thing while my friends or parents were in front giving me feedback until; we got a clear image.
    The PS2 for example had a 3 pin to scart adapter instead of actual scart. Early Xbox 360's also had this setup.
    And while our picture quality was better, any PAL gamer will gladly trade it for the faster (proper) framerate of NTSC games.

    • @victorpelini5995
      @victorpelini5995 4 года назад

      PAL was way superior when it came to TV, the better resolution ect...
      As for games and the framerate... PAL had NO CHOICE but to run 25 frames as its based on the 50hz of the AC current. NTSC was 30 fps bc of the 60hz AC. If Europe had been 60hz, PAL would've been superior in every aspects

    • @BlueEyedVibeChecker
      @BlueEyedVibeChecker 2 года назад

      @@victorpelini5995 In that regard, the Dreamcast in PAL regions was superior in every way since it had a. PAL60 support, b. Higher colour clarity/resolution than NTSC.
      The other consoles, especially the PS2, really gave PAL the shaft forcing fans to choose either higher NTSC framerates or better PAL colours.
