  • Watch this in full screen HD if possible! I wanted to find a cost-effective solution to hook up some of my old consoles to my HDTVs. I cover a pretty inexpensive SCART to HDMI converter that I purchased (link to buy down below) to test how much better direct RGB looks compared to Composite & S-Video. I compare game footage from Sega Master System, Super Nintendo and Sega Saturn so you can evaluate yourselves.
Another thing I forgot to mention, and test for this video, is the headphone audio-out on this converter. It may resolve the audio differences I note in the video, but I'm not sure.
This article goes WAY more in depth and provides some actual technical knowledge on a vast array of these converters. Mine ranked quite low, so the other options may even turn out better results! Read this before you buy:
    retrogaming.hazard-city.de/
Here is the link to purchase to converter I use in this video:

In Germany SCART was the standard for all video devices, all devices like this including all video game consoles even up to PS3.
Our TVs actually never or very rarely had RCA inputs, always scart. However sometimes you would see those RCA to SCART adapters bundled...

Not just Germany but Europe as a whole.

I'm from Germany and all TVs I remember had both SCART and RCA or Cinch as we called it.

Thank you for this summary, currently on a Digital -> VHS -> Digital roundtrip system and been using composite only with results even bad for the media in use. Going to switch to SCART and S-VIDEO where possible.

This video takes video/audio IO quite serious, which many other channels don't, which is nice. Here in Europe, both Composite and SCART are famous, but SCART tends to be used more often. I still remember that my PS2 came with the composite, and a scart converter from the composite.
Oh, and nice shirt :D Didn't know you had one of those.

I wouldn't mind getting one of those eventually, makes the 8 and 16-bit systems look really crisp.

I have a SCART to HDMI converter that was working for a while, but now that I got a different TV it's no longer producing a signal. I tried with three other TVs and got the same result.

can you help me? I have a old commadore amiga cd32 it has composite and svhs out I have a smart samsung hdtv. which way is best to connect it up composite yellow and 2 phono audio cables to the tv or get a upscaler device but some seem cheap Chinese crap, I did try to connect svhs but all I get is a black and white image on screen. my samsung tv has an external adapter cable input with a scart socket as well as a 3.5 jack with 3 phono cable adapter. but again s-video is just black and white for some reason I tryed and old plasma tv that has scart socket and s-video is still black and white so whats best way to connect. I currently can connect composite direct to the tv with a scart adapter but have thought is a upscaler device better quality ? and what about s-video?

Good video. However, I'm getting much more vibrant colours using the Sony S-Video cable (on PS2) than with a generic RGB cable on my CRT TV, but on a HDTV the RGB is much clearer. Both are a dramatic improvement from composite. As I intend to stick to CRT for PS2 is it worth forking out for a better RGB lead or are they all the same???

I use S-Video for my Playstation 2 on my hdtv. And it looks great.

Am I really losing picture quality playing my Genesis through composite on an RC television? The differences here seemed miniscule and I even thought Link to the Past looked better through composite as well as sounding more triumphant.

I’m sure this is not the case but the s-video looked as good or better on this video at least from the monitor I’m watching it on and I could be double wrong but I believe the scart cables can use composite output (the 21st pin I think) unless you have your system setup right to output good RGB so some people are just fooling themselves with scart connections unless they actually know what they’re doing

There was a Kickstarter campaign recently to produce Component cables for the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. I pre-ordered the Genesis Model 2 cable for my JVC X'EYE. The cables are due out sometime this summer so hopefully it works out. I don't know much about video cables, other than Composite cables on an HDTV makes me very depressed. So blurry. So washed out. So ugg. Awesome video as always

I use the exact same converter and love it on my dreamcast. For my genesis however i cant get the picture how i like it. That may just be my hdtv though. It is a good purchase to anyone thinking about it.

Theirs one thing I need to know before I buy it. Can that converter also read Composite with S-Video to SCART when I input it to the converter? I'm only asking because I want a converter that has both the SCART with S-Video (and composite. I only need the white and red part.) to HDMI converter. theirs only one company that has that (Coosis) but it's to expensive. And I don't want to buy 2 separate converts that's one for S-video (with AV) to HDMI and the other SCART to HDMI. Unless it dose also read AV with S-Video to SCART to. So yeah that's why I asked.

    To All,
I have been going nuts in the past couple of months
trying to find the ideal RGB SCART cable for the Sega Saturn NA Version.
Each cable claimed to be the best, yet a loud annoying buzz feedback
has been coming through on my audio feed. I discovered this feedback
noise is caused from poor quality cables that do no shield wires. Hence,
90% of the cables out there. "retro_console_accessories" of EBAY
sells a RGB SCART cable 10 times thicker than the normal cable for a
little more cost. Get the shield upgrade charge with this cable. I am
running Bowers & Wilkins 7.2 Channel Stereo system with a very good
receiver. I put the volume to max and still zero noise feedback!! The
picture quality is amazing, colors that are normally deficient are now
complete, bright and vibrant. If you are serious about retro gaming in
high quality use a good SCART cable with a HD Upscaler Box.

What about s video red/yellow/white cables into a scart adapter then into this box to hdmi?

    • @lukassteinbrink322

The image will be still terrible of course as the source is still composite the worsest image you can get. The difference is that composite is one singel signal containing the 3 colors and the luminance while RGB-SCART has more then one signal for video all three colors has their own line one for red, one for green, and one for blue.

To me at least, the composite clip just sounded louder rather than better.

Scart makes the image brighter but it really shows the pixels... Busters Hidden Treasure for example, the sky, instead of being shaded, in scart it's literally just a pixel mishmash and looks hideous...
