I have found as long as you have at least a little bit of mechanical ability it isn't hard. Confidence is the most important, then research. Been working on cars since I was a kid. Started with dirt bikes and worked my way up to cars. It has saved me tens of thousands of dollars. I built a 600hp Honda almost 20 years ago. I'm basically restoring a turbo neon right now.

That's great. I have found most people have some ability and some have a whole lot. I have met a few who were simply naturals, could look at an engine and with minimum information just go right to the spot in a matter of minutes. Not just in the older simpler cars but in modern super complicated systems that need a scanner to even begin to trace the problem. Such people are priceless, and seem to either get lost by promoting up into supervisors, or to burn out in 15 or 20 years because they wind up carrying whole shops full of lesser mechanics.

That's awesome. I did in-car overhaul on my 1988 Nissan Z-24 pickup, it needed a valve job but I always wanted to, so I just did the rest of it. Took me three solid days and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I changed the rings but left the mains and con rod bearings alone and just reinstalled those.
Got it all back together, cranked the engine, NO start! But I thought for a minute, then got out and unbolted the distributor and turned it 180 degrees and reinstalled. The truck roared to life...

Just found this channel. Miatas are great cars. I had an NB (99, and red like this one) for several years. My favorite car that I’ve owned, so far. At the time I was living in CA but did a lot of work in TX. After flying to TX in the morning, working 8 to 10 hours there, and flying back to LAX, I was sometimes beat. But the Miata didn’t care. It would greet me in the airport parking lot with a full dose of positive attitude. I would get in, throw the top back, turn the music on, and feel great, and completely refreshed, as I flew down the freeway to the South Bay!

When you put the engine on the engine stand, place the adjustable arms such that center of gravity of the engine is centered on the engine stand's rotating shaft.
Never center the engine stand on the crankshaft, youll end up with it topheavy and hard to rotate like in your video. If you adjust the engine so the center of rotation is closer to the cylinder head, the weight will be balanced, the engine wont try to flip upside down, and youll be able to rotate the motor on the stand with one hand.

    • @jacobthomas9366

Keep up the great work. Btw that lower oil pan is called a windage tray, it helps prevent oil from becoming frothy by separating it from the crankshaft. It will become frothy by getting thrown around by the crank introducing air. When that happens there is almost zero lubrication to the bearings.

Mazda knocked it out of the park with the first two generations of Miata. So easy to work on and great handling. It's no surprise it's the most raced car in SCCA history, especially with the Spec Miata series.
Best part - since it's a non-interference engine, you can lose a timing belt and all you suffer (nearly all of the time) is just the embarrassment of needing a tow. Plus there's so much room in the engine bay.

I did a lot of tweaks to that car, but still think the BEST "mod" I ever did was taking it to get a full 3d suspension geometry check done on it. The specialist (A place here in the UK called "PowerStation") asked me how I WANTED it to handle, I told them I like the front to have as much grip as possible, but the back to let go gradually at the limit to tell me I was close to trouble, and that was EXACTLE what I got. The handling went from "Well, I guess it's OK" to "More grip than I felt comfortable using on the road". :D

I worked in a shop where the owner's son was doing a brake job and while pulling a drum return spring up to its attachment point, the brake tool slipped off the spring and went into his eye causing him to lose it. Safety glasses would have prevented the loss.

I know you didn’t completely tear the engine down and rebuild it. You just did the timing belt and oil pan this time. But, completely tearing an engine down and rebuilding it then starting it with no issues, on the first try, is one of the most satisfying things I have ever done. But, no matter how many I’ve done, I still get butterflies in my stomach every time I turn the key for the first restart and I dread the day that I don’t get them anymore. That’s because if that ever happens, it means I’ve either become too cocky and arrogant or I just don’t give a sh!t and I don’t ever want either of those things to happen.

Nice job, But since you had the engine out and separated from the transmission you should have taken the flywheel off and had it resurfaced and you also should have replaced the rear engine main seal to do the job correctly.

It appears she installed a new flywheel. And may have not mentioned replacing the rear seal. But if she didn't replace the rear seal, agreed that she should have.

YOUR AWESOME THATS not a easy AUTOMOTIVE engine and transmission install and clearance on newer cars leave no room for error when installing engines and transmissions and require patients and lots of prep planning etc thanks for sharing.

Even if you get it wrong on one of those mazda blocks the valves don't interfere with the pistons. you can snap a timing belt and replace it at the side of the road!

Orient the belt so that the marks line up when you have rotated the engine crankshaft in the direction of rotation so all the slack it on the tensioner side. Set the tension. Rotate engine 2 rotation (in direction of running) stop on the crankshaft mark, check the cams if they line up your gold.

I would recommend using a plastic rod in the spark plug hole to check for TDC instead of the socket extension. had a coworker use a round file on a diesel and it broke off in the chamber and he didn't get all the pieces out and we had to replace the piston. otherwise keep working and learning. good job

Great job, congratulations. Make sure (so as those interested in seeing what you do understand) you do make it clear when you are speaking about ignition timing or valve timing. I am pretty sure you are speaking about valve timing here. You could have made some comments on how the cams are driven (belt or chain) and how easily seen are the marks to be used for valve timing. I am retired after 40+ years in a car shop (independent or Dealership) never worked with a female mechanic, never even seen one try. Plenty of female Service Advisors. Females seem to do very well in the Service Advisor position.

U can check timing before install. You spin the crank 2 full revolutions n see if it still lines up. Hope this helps

The reason there is a major push for electric vehicles is because of this. The freedom to fix your own vehicle, the freedom to drive where and when you want. Can you imagine if these people decide to switch off your car as their electric and say no one can go anywhere because of a bogus lock down.
