This cover is great two-fold. First, shows kurt's ability as a songwriter. Secondly, the ability of this group to see and transform a hard rockin' song into beautiful bluegrass. All around wonderful.

I don't know why this comment section is so salty over some words. Kurt did covers all the time. He didn't feel bound to play all the same notes or words - even in his own songs. It's an artist's right to shape something how they like - that is what art is.
Big difference between Johnny Cash and Iron Horse. When it comes to making edits to a song you're covering, there *is* some etiquette involved. Cash was such a massively popular and well respected artist that he was able to do that without it being an issue. Trent Reznor was ecstatic that cash was covering him. Also, maybe more importantly, cash didn't want to curse because of his religious convictions, which, even if I personally think it's a little silly, I still respect that. These guys were just uncomfortable with the word "gay", the phrase "everyone is gay". Discomfort was a big part of much of Nirvana's lyrics, that discomfort was part of the thought behind them, part of what makes them so good. If you're going to neuter the song like this without an apparent respectable reason (like religious convictions), then don't cover the song. Honestly kinda glad they self-outed their own ignorance and homophobia. They kinda just used Nirvana's song for their own popularity while they spit in the face of what Nirvana was trying to do.
@@rjmoney9 The reality is, that none of us can really be 100% sure why lyricists choose certain words, or what exactly their meaning or intentions were when they wrote a song. Artists have explained their lyrics, of course and in that case, we can be sure. But I'm fairly certain Kurt never confirmed exactly WHY he used the word 'gay', or what he meant. I could be wrong, and if I am feel free to correct me. If there is an interview with Kurt defining the term 'gay' and confirming the context in his lyrics, then by all means point me in the right direction. My point is, we don't know what Kurt was getting at when he used the term, so how can we be sure the message was positive?! That brings me to my next point... have you spoken with the members of Iron Horse? Did they happen to explain to you why they chose the word 'okay' and omitted the word 'gay'? Did they confirm in an interview the meaning and reasoning behind their decision to change the lyrics? If they did, I'm open to being correctly informed. If they didn't specify their reasoning, then everything you're saying is an ASSUMPTION. You're assuming they're homophobic, you're assuming they're bigoted. There are so many possibilities, they COULD have changed it because of their religious beliefs, they may have felt that wording was more age appropriate (after all they have young, impressionable grandkids who listen very closely to their music, so perhaps they didn't want them hearing the message that everyone is 'gay'-not because gay is a negative thing, but because not everyone is gay and young minds tend to take things literally), maybe they just liked the sound of that phrasing more than the original wording. There are so many possible reasons, and I'm sure there are multiple reasons why they changed it. But of course, everyone assumes that it's a negative reason. Everyone assumes that they're automatically homophobic. I really feel that this is a classic example of what's wrong with our society today. People are so quick to judge and condemn, and often it's the very same people who preach love and acceptance who ASSUME, judge, and condemn the most. The 'love' 'acceptance' and 'equality' only extends so far, until someone says or does something that offends them, and without even knowing their true intentions and meaning, assign them an array of negative labels and refuse to give the benefit of the doubt. Allow me to make something perfectly clear, I'm not claiming to know what Kurt or Iron Horse meant by their choice of lyrics, all I'm saying is that I'm not going to assume anything about them. Until they actually do something that is harmful, I will continue to appreciate their artistic contributions and commend them for their POSITIVE impact on the world. I don't know why Iron Horse changed the word, but until I know for sure, I will make assessments based on the behavior I have seen them exhibit, rather than assumptions. I've seen them behave in a kind and accepting manner toward others, so that is what I will assess about them, that they are kind and accepting, until they prove otherwise.
When my son was younger, he was into grunge and screamer music. I would hear him sing these beautiful songs played on his acoustic guitar and marvel at how good they were. Then he would play me the grunge or screamer version, and the song would be unrecognizable. Now that he is 20 years older, he has brought those songs back in acoustic versions, and people love them.
The hallmark of a great song is that different artists can both do it justice and make it their own. Herbie Hancock also does a great version of this tune on The New Standard. A tribute to the song's true genius.
To all of you trolls whining about the lyric change: 1) Buy an instrument 2) Learn to play as well as these guys 3) Become a well-known, respected bluegrass cover band 4) Cover a song not typically associated with your musical style 5) LEAVE THE LYRICS INTACT
Am I the only nice comment in this thread for you people who have such high intelligence you obviously didn't learn that if you don't have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all Ironhorse you guys are one of my favorite bluegrass bands keep On the picking
not my cup of tea as far as style, but respect where respect is due. From one musician to a group of others, well played. it's interesting and challenging to transcend genres and come out with a good composition on the other side, so a tip of the hat for you good sirs. knowing the source material and hearing how they achieved a balance between that and their own flare is pretty cool.
I'm gay and it doesn't bother me that he changed the lyrics (everyone's okay) at all. They changed the music, why not change the lyrics too. I get a kick out of listening to this. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
It's only the people who aren't that seem to get offended. They feel obligated to get offended for the whole social justice crap. So good on you for being bigger than all these people!
Oh yes they do champ. You're pickin' what suits your narrative and forgetting the rest. Don't be so afraid of people expressing themselves. Language is ours to use and convey how we feel. It's very important.
So, tons of people angry that they slightly altered one lyric line. Were you that angry that Johnny Cash, performing Hurt by NIN, changed "crown of s**t" to "crown of thorns"? Artists do this all the time. This is an excellent cover of an excellent song. Period.
Definitely a decent cover, but nowhere near the level of Cash's cover of "Hurt". He also changed a bit on his (also excellent) cover of "Rusty Cage" by Soundgarden if memory serves me. Johnny had a way of making a song his own, even arguably better, while staying true to the source material. I can understand why people are getting bent out of shape with this cover, and I normally like Iron Horse a lot. This was just ok, because the change was so early in the tune, and a bit jarring, at least for me. The tone of the song felt fundamentally different. A great cover changes the song in a way that is still evocative of the original (especially if the original is as iconic as "All Apologies"). This one seemed to lack a bit of that soul, and felt like a cover, if that makes sense. Their cover of "Rocket Man" was much better, and no one gives a damn that they changed "cold as hell" to "cold as ice".
Here's the thing: if Kurt's alternative lyrics were, "all my words are grey" what does it matter that they changed it differently? Kurt's own alt lyrics didn't have a goddamn thing to do with sexuality! That is not the meaning of the song, obviously. This band covers songs and changes lyrics according to how they interpret them. They may not have known fully what Kurt meant by using gay (as it was derogatory during that time) so they didnt want to offend. People are so fast to cast judgement on people all while preaching acceptance. I guess I'm just mortified by all the hate I'm seeing.
I don't really see why people are getting all bent out of shape because they changed one word. In my opinion it doesn't change the feel of the song. Not even a little bit. From what I understand they are on the religious side of things so they changed a lyric to be more comfortable with singing the song. Nothing wrong with that. It is still an excellent cover of the song and even though I am not in the least bit religious I choose to enjoy the merits of their performance rather than obsess over something as trivial as a changed word.
First albums i ever got: nirvana unplugged in NY, nighty mighty bosstones and a fucken sublime CD. Love it. These guys give such a good performance , i normally hate county music but i absolutely appreciate these talented fellows
@tonylwright ....dude this is a *cover band*. imagine being so uncreative that you just use other people's songs and capitalize on their artistic creations... kinda sad tbh. If you think this is musical talent then you're really showing your own lack of judgement. There's a reason they play almost all their shit at this snoring pace... they literally take a song from another genre (which masks a lot of their deficiencies in technical bluegrass skills), then they apply the same generic banjo rolls and mandolin chops to it at a medium-slow tempo. The solos are uninspiring, technically lacking... maybe if they spent more time working on their instruments instead of working on the production value of their videos they would be able to do something that doesn't sound like corporatized glitzy grass-pop. Kurt made the right decision to end it all because he got to avoid hearing this shit done to his music
This cover is great two-fold. First, shows kurt's ability as a songwriter. Secondly, the ability of this group to see and transform a hard rockin' song into beautiful bluegrass. All around wonderful.
Except the lyrics are changed

I get a weird feeling this song was ment to be played this way. Goosebumps.
It was if you listen to early demo without all the other instrument’s

I can guarantee that Kurt would love this... If he was still here, I can imagine this is what the band would actually sound like.
the alternate line to it that kurt sang were "all my words are grey"
I love how everyone is complaining about the one lyric change when Johnny Cash did the same thing for "Hurt".
BUT BBRO HE DIDNT SAY "GAY" YHIS IS VERY IMPROTEANT TO MEE

there's something about bluegrass, that enables it to trasform a chaotic grunge song into a thing of precision & beauty. it's really very good.
