Are you stranded in in your SMG BMW E60 M5 with a non functioning starter motor, or low battery? Let’s take a look at what’s required to get you rolling again!
Always wondered how it could be done? Now I know, thanks to another one of your ace tutorials. Thank you. Got the joy of the Vanos Solenoids to swap over at the weekend 😢 so throwing a new thermostat (gone for a 90 deg one) whilst it’s in bits……. Wish me luck 😂
Thank god for this video, my E60 M5 has got a starter problem. I was able to get the car started with this method and get it home. I guess it’s off to the garage for a new starter motor.
My car is finally going in on Wednesday to get the starter motor replaced. BMW wanted £965 for a starter motor I managed to get the Valeo starter motor from Germany for £180. Will update later as to how much it cost in labour charges.
The garage charged me 6 hours labour to change the starter motor, which I think is very reasonable for the amount of work which is involved in changing the starter motor.
excellent video, iv comments on your videos many times, iv ordered all parts for the rod bearings pullies and all other parts you recommend to replace. just moved to a new house and building a garage with a 2 post lift, a big then ill rewatch your vids and do the bits to my car
I'm on 129k miles. Bendix drive started playing up a few hundred miles ago. Had this on my e36 325td back in the day, not as easy to get the starter out on this one as it is on the e36 to DIY the springs in the bendix. 🤣
Depends how often the car is driven, and if any leaks have been identified with the SMG. To be honest most of these cars are getting on a bit now, it would be worth checking. There’s a bit of a process to it, I plan to put out a video soon!

Have fun- good luck!
Hopefully never need to use this, but thankful you've uploaded this resource.
Better to have it and not need it!
Sterling Work as always👍 I hadn’t even thought about this, one for the memory bank defiantly.
For sure!

Glad the video helped. Starter motor replacement big job on these engines!
@@MTechGuy yes big job, garage have said at least 6 hours Labour. But the starter motor is 18 years old so I can’t really complain.

Very informative. Hopefully don’t need it 😅 but at least I know now! Thank you 🙏
No worries!

The E36 would have been a walk in the park compared to these cars!
🤯 Thought all the cars were keyless with a fob
Not the early E60 M5’s. Mines a 2005, they come with a diamond key
I thought you sold the m5
Nope, the M5 stays! The X5 has gone though
love your channel mate ! question ! when should we top off smg fluid ? just wondering
