    My favorite trivia about this film is that Shane Black wanted to write a romance film after the 'failure' of The Long Kiss Goodnight but he kept getting writer's block and just said "Fuck it. I have to put a murder in it." Phenomenal film.

      THATS why I love this film, he did Long Kiss Goodnight! Everyone says Die Hard is the best Christmas movie, I think that one takes the cake.

    This movie is just entertaining overall. The chemistry between Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer was nothing short of immaculate. Val Kilmer was the highlight of the film, and that's not a knock on RDJ, or anyone else. Also, I love Michelle Monaghan. It's a shame that we didn't get a sequel.

      It is a rare 'Shane Black' project where no sequel seems to have been mooted. 'The Nice Guys' is pretty much a 'spiritual successor'.

      @@jamesatkinsonjayep I just watched this movie because Chris reviewed it and damn it’s really similar to nice guys, the Hollywood party, the murder mystery, family involvement, people getting hurt in hilarious ways. If I had seen kiss kiss bang bang before nice guys I probably wouldn’t have appreciated the nice guys as much when I watched it

      He was good looking so they kept trying to give him leading man roles, when what he is is a comedic genius! He’s very versatile but he shines best when he’s being sassy and funny.

    It's nice to look back on the movies that helped turn RDJ's life around. Because if you only know him from post-Iron Man stardom... Downey's substance abuse was a massive scandal in Hollywood. Like really, really bad...

      This. I remember being really pleased that this movie was so good & I absolutely adored Tropic Thunder. As a longtime addict myself, I was definitely pulling for him to get his life together. When I heard he’d been cast to play Tony Stark, I was so happy for him. As an Iron Man comic fan from the 70’s & 80’s I also thought it was perfect casting, as Tony Stark is a pretty bad alcoholic in comics & I thought that RDJ would really be able to understand that struggle.

    As a gay man, I loved the portrayal of Val Kilmer as a regular guy who happens to be gay. I get tired of the stereotypes of gay men as the flamboyant and sassy best friend. These stereotypes donot reflect reality .AND the gay man does not die. This was refreshing.

  • @toddJM1015
    @toddJM1015 9 месяцев назад +15

    I adore this movie because it's not afraid to go dark when it needs to, but never to the point that you can't have fun with it. The eventual reveal and the whys and whos are actually really, really dark. Same with The Nice Guys. The plot is really dark, but populated with these fresh, aware characters that you don't notice. I want another Shane Black movie like this. The whole "Look up the definition of idiot in the dictionary" line is probably my favorite joke in the movie. And while Downey Jr is amazing in this, Val Kilmer is unmatched in comedic timing and delivery. I once told a friend that this movie is what would happen if James Elroy (author of LA Confidential) wrote a Deadpool movie. I wish they would give Shane Black a TV series and let him play. Great review and Merry (belated) Christmas to you and yours Chris!

    An idea I had for a future video is I was thinking of a series of underrated or forgotten movies. Much like One Hour Photo or What Lies Beneath. One example of a movie I thought could be reviewed was Death Becomes Her. Which kind of gotten panned by critiques. However, when I watched it I found it very funny and original. Another movie that kind of vanished after its release was Revolutionary Road with Leo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet. Just a thought.

    This is one of the reasons why I hate it when people say Iron Man "saved" RDJ's career.
    He was already doing good movies again by the time he got Iron Man. Even Tropic Thunder was under wraps regardless of Iron Man and would have still been a blockbuster.

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja 9 месяцев назад

      It was certainly a key part of his 'comeback' along with Gothika [as he met his current wife who played a big part in helping him hit back]. Jon Favreau apparently said that watching 'Kiss Kiss' was what made him realise RDJ was perfect for Iron Man. I guess it's because more people saw Iron Man [and it came out a few months before Tropic Thunder] and sadly 'Kiss Kiss' was a hidden gem on release that wasn't as big a hit as it should have been.

    Please review the Beverly Hills Cop series. I know you'll never see this but I'm putting it out into the Universe anyway

    You talked me into finally seeing this. Hope you end up reviewing Iron Claw. I feel as gut punched as watching Marley and Me.

    Would like to point out that the audition scene was especially funny when the dialogue just so happens to correspond to the events that trigger RDj's character into getting upset for real and they all treat him like he's some old school improv actor...stuff like that that breaks the nonsense movie cliches like the "white knight" or "Russian roulette" scenes. Watched this right after "Lucky number Slevin" and it was really a palette cleanser to see suspense done correctly with humor to boot

    Kiss kiss bang bang is one of my fav shane black movies along with the last boy scout. They both are highly underated films and i always reccomend them to people and they usualy have no clue they even exist. Soon as i say the dude who weote the leathal weapon series wrote and directed them they usually perk up then.
    Its such a great film. I watched a few intervews with black and he said that he deliberately went away from the tropes and wanted them to fail like you said. The hard dude standing up for the drunk girl gets his ass whooped in the first 10 mins of the film. It establishes that he isnt some hollywood tough guy hes a regular dude thrown into a shitty situation.
    The scenes where perry realises he killed a man before he could get the info. Downeys character is in shock and perry is just pissed they couldnt get the info death means nothing to him. That would throw you as a regular person and he writes it so well. Perry having killed is so calm but downey plays that shock/panic so well. "Oh crap i just killed a man".
    Was brilliant and i love this film.

      'Last Boy Scout' had a very troubled shoot but is a very entertaining film. I agree it does seem to be forgotten now a days.

      @UltraMagnis Shane Black is just brilliant at subverting tropes and clichés in his films. Yes, there was the Russian Roulette trope being subverted in this film, but there are examples of it in The Nice Guys as well. There's the scene where Holland March (Ryan Gosling) tries to break into a bar after closing time so he can check the receipts. Holland wraps a paltry piece of cloth around his hand. Not his arm. Just his hand. He punches through the pane of glass on the bar's backdoor and, instead of then safely opening the door and entering the bar as you would expect him to do, he immediately cuts his arm on the glass, starts bleeding profusely, says "That's a lot...that's a lot of blood" a couple of times and then passes out on the staircase. The camera cuts to the sound of blaring siren and the sight of flashing lights, then the sight of Holland in the ambulance, and then him being wheeled out of the hospital.

      @@steelydanlover1972 yeah I loved the nice guys too. Very underrated in its own right.
      Everyone wants to be a Hollywood tough guy but the reality is more entertaining. Plans don't always go to plan and I love that Shane black understands that people wanna see that more so then some dude kicking ass and taking names. Those films are fun for sure but black always had a way of writing great but flawed characters and I always gravitated towards his films even as a kid. Lethal Weapon is a perfect example of mix of this with rigs. The first scene you see of him is him not caring about his own life and wanting to eat a bullet. He breaks down and cries.....his dog just looking at him makes him not do it. In the street he's a bad ass but really not deep down....he is a man wanting an opportunity to end his life and that's why he is a loose cannon not because he is some uber macho tough guy.
      I was hooked from that scene and my dad was one of those dads that let me watch anything really even as a kid. Lethal weapon is still one of my fav film series bar the last few where black was not involved and you can tell. They just don't have that same feel of real, flawed and ultimately damaged characters.
      Their motivations for the story are not because they are just tough.....but because they see something or hear something that triggers them to act due to their flawed nature. He's a great writer Shane Black.
