Is it his birthday today? Mine too!! I did not know that. (Edit) Ohh, no. He's 16th, I'm 17th. Looks like I'm not going to be a great screenwriter then...
The interplay between Kilmer and Downey Jr is so amazing, Shane Black is an incredible writer and very good director. This is a great movie as is The Nice Guys
I always preferred ''Do you know what you find when you look up the word ''idiot'' in the dictionary?''...''No, you find the definition of the word ''idiot'', which is what you are!''
Tbh we were all gutted there was no sequel to Kiss Kiss-and we all suspect The Nice Guys was probably the story Shane wrote originally to be the sequel but couldnt get backing so changed it to fit the stars of The Nice Guys.
Also, Samantha was right. Dexter was in town filming the Johnny Gossamer movie, which is when Harmony told her sister that he was her real father. "Lord of the Cock Rings" was a fake title that was put on the VHS of the Johnny Gossamer movie
Shane Black said in an interview that he loves to read old pulp detective novels and he always finds some little plot point or characterization in even the worst written ones that make him dream up his own scenarios that he wouldn't have come up with otherwise, so he will buy the movie rights to the old book that inspired him so he can use that part and so the original author (or their heirs more likely) will get their due for leading him on the path to his eventual story. The Johnny Gossamer books in this movie are most likely an homage to his love of that kind of old pulp crime novel, and I love to think about which little plot points in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang are from old books like that and how much fun it must have been for him to stitch them all together in a movie like this that he got to direct himself.
One of my favorite movies and RDJ’s comeback film. Saw it when it came out. Never understood how it didn’t do better. Thank you for reacting to this gem.
One of my all-time favorite films, severely underrated, plus this role got Robert Downey, Jr. an audition for Iron Man, so you can thank Shane Black for the MCU
Love the fourth wall breaking that was in this film. There's actually a song called Mr. Kiss kiss bang bang that was used in Thunderball, 1965, a James Bond film.
LOVED your enthusiasm during this watch; great flick that still feels fresh today. Yeah, Downey held it in such high regard that when the higher ups at marvel decided to change things up with Iron Man 3 (to bring in someone else to direct it other that Favreau), it was Downey that said there was no decision, it was "so obvious' that it should be Shane Black (who also ended up writing Iron Man 3, along with that signature voice-over). And as far as I'm concerned, lol, there are moments there between 'Tony' and 'Rhodey' that just felt like a glorious reboot of Lethal Weapons (also written by Shane) with the camaraderie of Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. I honestly half expected Rhodey to say something like "One day I'm gonna be too old for this." 😂
So glad this film is finally getting the recognition it has always deserved. Like 'Tucker and Dale', this has appeared on a couple of reaction sites recently. I love it... Also, Shane Black is probably best known for 'Lethal Weapon'.😁
I knew me and my wife watched this on a date night, but I couldn't remember anything about the movie until 28:56 and then it all came back to me in an instant, because I remember laughing out loud so hard, it stood out from the rest of the movie theater's gasping. I'm sorry, but that was unexpected and funny as hell. Definitely underrated. As always, great reaction. Hope the new family is healthy and well.
Love that you reacted to this! I worked in a video rental store when this came out so I saw it (as I watched a ton of movies in that time) and I couldn't believe how good it was I kept recommending it to so many customers of the store. It was the perfect gem that people never had seen and always would like once they've watched it. Such a well written plot and then perfect chemistry between the characters, not to mention just how fucking hilarious it is. Kilmer and Downey Jr. banter is my all time favorite of all time. It really is a movie for people who love movies! "So my question is this" "No, my question, I get to go first: Why in pluperfect hell would you pee on a corpse?!" That scene had me suffocating from laughter the first time I saw it.
Thanks for watching and reacting. great choice. I would like to note the work of the cameraman - the film attracts with shades of light blue, this creates a cozy and comfortable atmosphere and, as you noticed, gives the film a certain unique style
This was one of me and my sisters favorite movies. We were way too young to be watching it too lol. I should really watch it with her again one of these days.
Oh god, yes! FINALLY someone reacts to this masterpiece. This was actually the movie, that convinced me to put RDJ as my #1 ALL TIME favorite actor and replace Edward Norton. And it's been like that ever since....
I love this movie. I've said this about a few supporting characters in the past but I really wish Gay Perry had been given his own movie (&/or tv show). 🥰🥰🥰
That clip where you saw the dad on the video was Corbin Bernsen when he was a star in the hit tv show L.A. Law. You may also recognize him as Dorn, the shortstop, in the movie Major League. And yeah, I wouldn't consider this a Christmas movie; it's only the setting was around Christmas time. I'm glad you guys watched this and enjoyed it. If you want to check out an old Christmas movie, I would recommend Holiday Inn.
Iron Man was obviously Robert Downey Jr.’s big comeback, but this movie here was definitely part of it too. Also why Shane Black would go on to direct Iron Man 3.
I knew Sam was going to get a kick out of the 'Native American Joe Pesci' line. Those descriptions were all spot-on, none more so than the Steven Segal lookalike.
This movie is hilarious throughout. This was one of several films RDJ did after finally getting clean and sober from drug use and was starting to get back on his feet as an actor.
This movie is easily in my top five-maybe even top three-favorite movies of all time. Everything about it; the dialogue, how it handles its broad range of tones, Robert Downey Jr, Val Kilmer and Michelle Monaghan (I’ve had the biggest crush on Michelle Monaghan since I saw her in this movie) and the cinematography; I just love the way this movie looks. It hits all of my sweet spots And this video is already one of my favorites that you guys have done, You are one of the best reactors out there. Happy Holidays to TBR, Samantha , and your family 🙂👨👩👧🎬🎥
This was such a surprise when my buddy and I rented it when it first came out. We loved it! You guys are the first reactors I've seen react to it, so thanks for making me feel like it's my first time watching all over again!
Shane Black also did The Last Boy Scout, with Bruce Willis. You're not slow, neither of these slows down for the audience. But by the time they're done you get what happened.
Love the reaction guys you gotta check out the last boyscout written by Shane Black and directed by Tony Scott highly underrated 90s action movie starring Bruce Willis and Damon Waynes
So awesome to see a Reaction to this gem. There is a few little-known films I always recommend to people that are very solid well-made movies but due to circumstances beyond their control (usually releasing during other blockbusters or poor marketing) the films kind of slip away unnoticed. Between the witty writing, perfect acting, and engaging progression to the end this is one of my favorite films.
The title comes from a 1962 Italian article about the film "Dr. No" which nicknamed James Bond "Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang". Later, the Bond producers planned to use that name for the theme song for "Thunderball". The song "Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" was recorded by Dionne Warwick and the soundtrack for the film was largely based on that song. But the producers decided that the theme song should include the title of the movie. So, they replaced the song with "Thunderball" by Tom Jones.
"Yeah, a talking monkey. It came here from the future, only says 'Ficus'..." Val's glib delivery and scathing cut downs might make this his last great speaking role. He's got a ton more movies to discover, but I would suggest Real Genius, The Saint, and Batman Forever for some great performances from Val that you haven't seen yet.
Shane Black wrote Lethal Weapon & more was highest paid screen writer in history & broke down after he wrote Last Action hero. This was his first movie in like a decade at this point.
It’s unfortunate, cause Last Action Hero was an alright script. It just hit at a weird time. I don’t think it was promoted very well & Arnold was starting to lose some of his box-office invulnerability by then, which wasn’t Shane Black’s fault.
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 To be fair, _The predator_ is - unfortunately - the worst movie in the franchise. He really screwed the pooch. And yet he's one of my favourite writers - _The long kiss goodnight_ is a work of geniu.s

I think you guys were played. The sister was a deliberate red Herring. It's an homage to Film noir, so all the parts are there. The downer ending, where even though the antihero detective wins, they don't have a happy ending, the femme fatale is clearly Harmony, but technically all the women are femme fatales. The sister is, because her case puts them in harms way and she is the client like femme fatales usually are, Harmony is in because the antihero desires her, and his desire for her, and his pursuit of her case, puts him in harms way, The ringer is a a femme fatale because she too hires Gay Perry and puts him in harms way without realizing it could mean his death, Then there is the reversal, The bad guys are supposedly upstanding members of society. The wealthy man seemingly concerned about his daughter, like in Humphrey Bogart meeting Lauren Bacall in the Big Sleep and her wealthy dad. The wise cracking villains are also a trope in Film noir, often they are police or other goons, who make trouble for the main character, And like a good film noir, the main character is NOT a hero, but an antihero or a fallen hero. And a detective. The film even pays homage by making the story center around pop detective novels, and in this film, it also follows the pop detective, including the two cases, the other tropes, and him killing several bad guys in the last act. Oh, and the fact that the protagonist gets beat up, A LOT. From trying to defend the femme fatale, to being beaten up by the goons, and then finally the torture scene. In a straight story with a hero, he doesnt have to be so out of his depth. But in a film noir, he needs to be, and get beat up often. There's a wonderful video essay that breaks down the genre of film noir you may love to see. But you guys did amazing being right about who was behind it even before it was absolutely clear Harlan Dexter was the villain. The sister as a red herring just threw you a bit, as planned. I think the cassette title meant it was a porno originally, and recorded over with an old episode of the film he was in; probably Johnny gossamer. One of the more subtle themes in the movie is its commentary on Hollywood in general. such as how close the porn industry and mainstream hollywood are. it also shows this in the film with the girl who gets her face slapped off by a werewolf. It may have been a horror, but it definitely shows the gray area. same with the parties and the outlandish stuff happening. Or the cop who probably doubles as an actor, giving him a thumbs up and good luck. Or maybe it's just LA that the director is commenting on. Great stuff. This is one of my favourite movies. Glad you two enjoyed it. My favourite joke that shows how dumb RDJ's character is and how dry witted Gay Perry is, was the scene where RDJ's character doesnt hear 'Talking money' and says 'Talking monkey' and gay Perry runs with it. "Comes from the future. Ugly sucker. Only says 'Fickus' ", and RDJ's vacant response.
My buddy and I worked at Blockbuster when this movie came out on dvd. We got access to the dvds a couple weeks early so we could make recommendations. Nobody knew what this movie was but we watched it a bunch of times and recommended it to everyone who came into the store for the next year or so. Good times, this movie is super underrated!
Yes! A classic from _The Long Kiss Goodnight_ & _Lethal Weapon_ creator Shane Black. You'd also like 2005's similar _The Matador_ with Pierce Brosnan - another gem.
Love this reaction, you guys are just such happy people, it rubs off on your viewers. 😃 You've nearly watched all Shane Black's movies now, only The Monster Squad, The Last Boy Scout and The Predator left to do i think (I assume you saw Iron Man 3 off channel). Yeah, half his movies titles begin with 'The' and all his movies are great fun.
So glad you've watched this movie, it's bloody perfect, casting, story, writing, action. Love Shane Black. Please give The Outsider a go guys in your TV section.
Neither this nor The Nice Guys were hits. I saw both at the cinema, fell in love with both and I can't figure out why they didn't smash at the box office. I think Shane Black screenplays like Lethal Weappon have their edges rounded off by the director or studio to make them appeal more to the masses. I like it when he gets to direct.
You NEED to watch The Nice Guys. It's the next movie in this Universe. Same kind of buddy movie, except with Russel Crow and Ryan Gosling. I like it just a bit more than Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Highly recommended.
I have to rewatch this movie again, it's been over a decade. I remember I loved it so much. I cannot remember how I came across this movie, but I did own it on Blu-ray. Edit: I just remembered, I came across this movie because it was directed by Shane Black.
Val Kilmer, Robert Downey Jr., and Michelle Monoghan were all perfect in this. The way they played off eachother, one of if not the best display of a "buddy cop" movie. Really wish this had been a franchise.
Happy Birthday, Shane Black! 🎉

Thanks for reacting to such a movie. KKBB and Chaplin are RD jrs best work. I think it's Val Kilmer's best work as well.
One of the greatest Duos on screen of all time! Just fun!! 🎉 Iron Man and Ice!
Yesss, so happy you guys reacted to this! One of my favourite films, so sharp and fun 😄 Val Kilmer is fucking hilarious as Gay Perry 😂
LOVE this movie. So underrated. The dialogue is so snappy and funny. It’s perfect.
The line, is this the body, no it's the one a previous resident left 😂😂😂 genius.
The Russian Roulette bit is one of my favorite comedic moments of all time :)
Yes! A classic from _The Long Kiss Goodnight_ & _Lethal Weapon_ creator Shane Black. You'd also like 2005's similar _The Matador_ with Pierce Brosnan - another gem.
Yes. The Matador is so funny.
Pierce Brosnan was never better, he found a hooker with a heart of gold once.
Love this reaction, you guys are just such happy people, it rubs off on your viewers. 😃
You've nearly watched all Shane Black's movies now, only The Monster Squad, The Last Boy Scout and The Predator left to do i think (I assume you saw Iron Man 3 off channel). Yeah, half his movies titles begin with 'The' and all his movies are great fun.
So glad you've watched this movie, it's bloody perfect, casting, story, writing, action. Love Shane Black. Please give The Outsider a go guys in your TV section.
Holy shit, Samantha's face when the dog takes Harry's finger... 🤣🤣
Any movie Shane Black had a hand in writing, directing, or both...is set around Christmas.👍
Except Monster squad
@@jamalbryant8099 Dang, forgot that one.🤷♂️ Thank you for reminding me, I haven't seen it this year.🤘
This and Charlie Bartlett are my favorite two RDJ movies
Neither this nor The Nice Guys were hits. I saw both at the cinema, fell in love with both and I can't figure out why they didn't smash at the box office. I think Shane Black screenplays like Lethal Weappon have their edges rounded off by the director or studio to make them appeal more to the masses. I like it when he gets to direct.
You NEED to watch The Nice Guys. It's the next movie in this Universe. Same kind of buddy movie, except with Russel Crow and Ryan Gosling. I like it just a bit more than Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Highly recommended.
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that Shane Black was Hawkins in the first Predator movie.
I have to rewatch this movie again, it's been over a decade. I remember I loved it so much. I cannot remember how I came across this movie, but I did own it on Blu-ray.
Edit: I just remembered, I came across this movie because it was directed by Shane Black.
A great reaction! I love this movie and its nice to see someone who enjoys it as much as I did!
Val Kilmer, Robert Downey Jr., and Michelle Monoghan were all perfect in this. The way they played off eachother, one of if not the best display of a "buddy cop" movie.
Really wish this had been a franchise.
Great reaction! this is one of my favourite movies everyone in it is phenomenal. Keep up the awesome reactions.😊
I LOVE this movie. One of the best from Shane Black!
