      Make that the 60's. I remember watching Carson on an old beat up black and white television in the attic of my uncle's farm house. He hired us every summer around haying time to put up hay, paid a whooping 5 bucks a day and the day went from sunrise to sunset. It was more work getting him to pay us then putting up the hay though, that tight old fart. Once he hired me out to a neighbor to dig a toilet hole, it took me the best part of one day to dig it. He charged the neighbor 25 bucks for the hole, but all I got was my 5 bucks a day. Tight old fart, may he rest in turmoil! He was not a blood relative, he simply married mom's sister (RIP).

    • @JerryEricsson
      @JerryEricsson 4 года назад +6

      Honestly, I had a doctor once who smoked more then I did, he was the guy who gave me a prescription for nicotine patch and gum so I could kick the habit, it worked for me! He still smokes like a chimney. He was a great doctor, he handled my disability after an accident in the squad car left me unable to be a cop any more. My attorney met with him before our court date with Workers Comp, he was amazed, he told me "Your doctor loves you!" Said he wished all his clients could use him. I won my case with ease, that was in '93. While they declared me retired and cut my paycheck in half two years ago, the bureau is still paying me, and paying for my pain related meds.

      Not only would Johnny let his guests talk, he was terrific at putting the new ones at ease, and, having prepared by learning everything he could about the new guest, would provide topics for them to talk about if they got tongue tied. I watched him do this time and again when a new celebrity of some sort, started answering questions with one word or short answers. Johnny was one of a kind. I grew up listening to those great actors on the radio, since we had no power on our farm, we had an old battery pack radio, dad would let us listen to a couple of hours every night, and mom had her soaps in the afternoon, the hospital report was a must hear, before HIPA, they used to broadcast all the admissions and discharges as well as births to each hospital in the area every morning. Made it easy for the public to plan their visits to the patients. To bad we had to stop that but I guess some old fart decided he didn't want anyone to know he had a fart up his ass crosswise and needed to go in hospital.

    HISTORY.
    Burns is (at this point in time) the living memory of a lot of great entertainers that are, too all too many, unknown today.
    I'm so glad he included the "I'm funnier than you are" (Groucho) and "Why don't I just entertain you" (Jolson) stories.
    Note, incidentally, the absolute reverence with which Carson (a mere three years away from his own retirement) treats this Showbiz Eminence, who was making films with Gracie Allen when Carson was but a boy.

      Back in those days you could just sit back and smoke a cigar on set and relax like you would at home! World population was rising fast, but it was still in check. People knew their place, there were classic careers like shoemaker, carpenters, etc... people aspired to do the jobs their parents did, and your children would also inherit those careers. Later everyone wanted to be a big shot lawyer, doctor, or run for office, creating chaos in the job market. Forward to today, and population is rising uncontrollably, machines can do virtually any job, and governments are stomping on your rights. Soon we will have no freedoms left... I don't know what type of earth the meek shall inherit.

    When ever I need to smile and have a laugh or two, I bring this clip up or any clip with Jack Benny on Carson's show. Back when stars and the hosts had real good conversations. The clip of Jack talking about his trip to London (right after the Watergate saga) is priceless delivery of good entertainment just like this one is and we just don't have that in today's world.

    I didn't watch Mr. Carson as a kid, mainly because I didn't stay up late enough to. Now, watching him as an adult, it is a genuine pleasure to see the respect and the courtesy with which he treats his guests. He doesn't try to top them, he doesn't try to interrupt them, he doesn't try and outdo them. He brings them on and lets them shine, which is the mark of a true host and a fine gentleman. It's something that those who call themselves "late night hosts" could really stand to learn, these days, IMO.
