George was such a classy man. I sure miss old school folks like him. The man lives too just before his 100th birthday after this surgery. Smoked his cigars to the end.
Eight weeks after open heart surgery and smoking a cigar, the 78-year-old Burns delivered an energetic and 100 percent lucid interview and musical/vocal performance. Truly astonishing from a medical and entertainment viewpoint. Count me as inspired to work harder to accomplish my goals.
i got to stay up late one night with the grandparents, they let me watch george burns with johnny...i think this was the show. one of my major regrets about life was not spending more time with my grand parents.
You have Great Taste in comedians. This guy was 'old school'... and didn't just Do it... he WAS it. Sharp as a tack 'til the last day. (thanks for what you said.)
I miss the 70s. Times were simple and we had shows like Johnny Carson. I loved "OH God" with John Denver and George Burns. I'm glad I was alive to witness these great comedians and artists.
One thing I hate is that since George was still working in the 90s (And in HIS 90s), more younger people remember him but Jack Benny died in '74, shortly after this broadcast and many people today don't know who Jack Benny was. We should all be sharing Jack Benny videos and telling friends and family about him. His stuff is still incredibly funny today.
All I can add is that all of these wonderfully positive comments here are correct, and right on, and beautiful. George Burns, Johnny Carson and Jack Benny were simply the best---just classic performers. That's entertainment!
George Burns was one that I never got to see in Vegas and I wish I had. I have been lucky to see a lot of great entertainers in Vegas & Tahoe back during the 80's-90's. George Burns can never be matched or replaced. Shalom
I really love this episode. Not just for George's performance. It's beautiful and yet bittersweet hearing him talking about Jack Benny the way he does. A best friend who was like a brother to him. He spoke so endearingly about someone who was most likely the most important person in his life at that point. Unaware of the grief that would soon come. This video reminds me to appreciate the friends and loved ones I have because you never know how much time you have left to share with them. God bless Jack and George.
Sadly, Jack Benny's 'stomachache' they're joking about turned out to be cancer of the pancreas, he'd be dead 2.5 months after this aired. And George would replace Jack again in the movie version of The Sunshine Boys, gave him an Oscar and a whole new career at 81.
I enjoy both comenians but Jack was timeless. He had one of the most popular radio shows and worked nearly till his death. Much of his work is on RUclips and is still incredibly funny.
RIP Jack Benny (February 14, 1894 - December 26, 1974), aged 80 RIP Gracie Allen (July 26, 1895 - August 27, 1964), aged 69 RIP George Burns (January 20, 1896 - March 9, 1996), aged 100 You will be remembered as legends.
There is ABSOLUTELY No Song Man like George Burns!! Thank you Johnny for devoting your entire Show to Mr. George Burns , He is Brilliant ! ♥️🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 🌼🌴⚘🇬🇧
Pretty cool when Jack Benny comes to visit you in the hospital. Reminds me of Jerry Lewis telling Johnny his heart problems were the result of eating too much Wendys. Still makes me laugh. Love all those legends.
He underwent a open heart surgery in that year 3 months prior and almost died from that, he was lucky. Plus there are things worse than smoking cigars, you won't see somebody eating only fast food everyday and living to 100. He ate 1 meal per day and didn't over-indulge in alcohol, that's what helped to live that long.
I come back from time to time to see how great television used to be. George was a true entertainer. He had more class than anything that's been around these parts since I don't know when.
George comes home one night to a large bouquet of flowers on the dining room table. “Gracie, where did you get these flowers?” Gracie answers: "Don't you remember, George? You said that if I went to visit Clara Bagley in the hospital I should be sure to take her flowers." I still chuckle at this one every once in a while.
George Burns, Jack Benny, Sid Caesar, Groucho Marx, Don Rickles, Carl Reiner, Red Buttons etc etc ……why did America get all the great Jewish comedians? It wasn’t fair. Shalom to all of you. You will NEVER be replaced.
I used to watch the George Burns and Gracie Allen Show when I was 7 or 8 years old. I always loved their Comedy. Television back in its early days offered a great education to everyone, in Music, News, Sports, Movies, and Drama. The innovation of TV into our homes brought everyone together, and had an equalizing effect on Americans. AND, Good Manners were always on display! No curse words!
George talks about his good friend Jacky Benny in this interview. Six weeks later Benny passed away. An emotional George Burns was unable to finish his eulogy as he and Benny had known each other for 50 years.
You know, it's sad to think all these folks have passed ! But I am so glad that they didn't have to witness the mess of things we've made here in 2024 ! May they all R.I.P. ♥️🥀♥️ GODSPEED
Gosh, but I miss all of the greats from back in the day. I recall that George was booked to do a show on his 100th birthday, but sadly he didn’t make that booking.
The governor of Ohio reminds me of George Burns. My father was also a lot like George Burns he was born in 1918 always had a cigar and had the same sort of personality.
What's interesting about Burns is that you could see showbusiness coursing through his veins. It was deep in his DNA. Whether telling jokes or speaking/singing, he went off without a hitch. Very smooth and practiced. Today's entertainers take note.
Nobody ever loved a woman as well as George loved Gracie. After I read his book about her my fervent prayer was, "Please send me a man who loves me as much as Burns loved Allen". My prayer was answered. Thank God and thank you George.
After Johnny died there was a lot of talk about him being a terrible narcissist but I never saw it on his show. Maybe just his personal life 🤷♀️ Loved to see his admiration and appreciation of the talent that his guests brought to the show. Sorely missed for sure 😢
My grandmother worked as a waitress at a country club in Arizona frequented by Carson back in the 50’s. She always said he was an asshole to all of the staff there. Nobody ever wanted to take his table.
If George had the same symptoms today, they’d wheel him into the cardio cath lab, stent his blocked arteries, put him on plavix and baby aspirin and he’d be home in a day and back to work the next. Still, George had many more great years ahead. Jack Benny, we’d sadly lose a little more than one month later. I really miss all these guys.
Such a different time ... simple and wholesome, George was an entertainer above all else. (Not that I want to go back to that time - I won't go into detail but the world has moved on and is more progressive thankfully).
Im just really discovering Jack. George i remember from the 1970s, but the remarkable histories, talent, and be I ng in the right spot at the right time during this incoming technology! Benny always said that he never planned it, or anything. It just was.
To hear George Burns sing about Aunt Jemima and then go to talk about a WWI song. 15:40. I never realized this before or gave it any thought, but WWI is only 47 years after the end of the Civil War in 1865.
Im 55 I remember watching The Burns and Allen show on a cable channel in the 80s i think it was Tbn or something like that i think it was a religious channel, but watched all George Burns films one of my favs is Just You and me Kid with Brooke Shields and of course all 3 Oh God film and won am oscar for The Sunshine Boys
Craig Ferguson came the closest because he would let his guests talk. He still was a far cry from Carson but none of the current batch let their guests talk. Johnny always had a question to prompt them and then let them answer.
George talks about Jack Benny's stomach issue... turns out Jack died a month later of stomach cancer. ..... I love those two guys. I'm 55, but I grew up with them. My dad and I used to watch them in the early-to-mid 1980s.

Some people should never leave this earth. I’m a boomer. I grew up with these gentlemen. I’m sitting here in tears.
I was born in 1978, I completely feel the same way❤
He was great in the GOD movies with John Denver. I remember my mom and I watching the old shows with his wife Gracie. She left too soon.

One of the best gifts from Entertainment we have ever received was, George Burns & Gracie Allen!!!
❤️❤️❤️
Johnny's level of interest in his guests (all of them) has never been matched. That is why he was so great, head and shoulders above all others.
Helped that he actually had interesting people to talk to. Host and guest alike are duds these days.
Jack trained him. True story.
George was such a classy man. I sure miss old school folks like him. The man lives too just before his 100th birthday after this surgery. Smoked his cigars to the end.
He did make it to his one hundredth birthday.

My favorite Martini guy of all time! RIP, George.
George Burns lived another 21 years! Unbelievable!

George Burns was amazing, he had such a natural gift of gab and for making people laugh.
Even as a kid in the 70s I loved watching and seeing George Burns , he just made you smile.
I like the table
i got to stay up late one night with the grandparents, they let me watch george burns with johnny...i think this was the show. one of my major regrets about life was not spending more time with my grand parents.
George Burns is one of my favorite comedians. It’s my 25th birthday
You and me both brother!

Johnny Carson was a very good friend as well.
Jack Benny died a month after this show. And George Burns lived another 22 years after this. Wild.

I could just listen to his stories all day long (& Gracie Allen's humorous antics too). I named my 2 cats: "George & Gracie"
A true legend and talent George was. It's sad to know that Jack would pass away just following month. Really loved them both.
I enjoyed George Burns over his illustrious career. 100 years wow!!
George Burns was a resilient person and a snappy dresser.
Gracie used to call him Nattie, not only because his name was Nathan but also because he was a great dresser and dressed very “nattily”.
What a treasure George Burns was. Same for Gracie.

George and Jack Benny were very close friends. George could always crack up Benny.
Oddly enough, Benny would die a month and some change after this interview. Day after Christmas.
George Burns lived to be 100 in spite of his cigar smoking!
Maybe, because of his cigar smoking !!!!!
