I'm a runner, I've ran marathons and I'd say running a marathon is not easy, requires a lot of training, but it's still easier than:
    - Carefully listening when there are multiple conversations going on.
    - Estimate on how much time has passed.
    - Trying to talk when about to have a meltdown.
    - Switching tasks rapidly, in a work environment.

What a great video today!! I relate to everything you are saying. It’s nice to hear that I’m not all alone in the world. I’ve always felt like an alien from outer space and that I just don’t understanding the world around me and it’s nice to hear somebody talk and say all these things that I’ve experienced throughout my whole life it just sucks that I’m 45 now finding that there’s others out there like me. Well I guess it’s better late than never. I’ll just take it as that instead of me just dwelling on it.

I am from the USA and my neurodivergent family loves sarcasm. My grandfather was the king of sarcasm.
I once did a stand up comedy routine for a program called Stand Up for Mental Health.

I think small talk is like stimming for neurodifficults. It's part of how they communicate, it's how they connect. They don't even realise it.

11:52 this is my living hell. Every time! EVERY single time!!! Always my fault....because its my fault. Because interpreting your meaning not the literal definition is my responsibility
18:01 YES!!! WHY ARE YOU JUST STANDING THERE!?!?
You feel like you are being judged.
20:35 it's your first class and everyone else is aceing the final
22:37 the cake I ate vs I ate the cake
24:18 omg we both forgot to move the car for street sweeping and we got a parking ticket now were going to loose the car...
    27:02 naw no way
28:20 yes! Being told about something abhorrent. Being disgusted being the ass for not being amused by the pain of others.

I remember being 9yo taken to my grandfather’s house that was 3hrs away during the school holidays and was “left there to spend the week” with no prior notice, my poor grandfather that mind you I was lucky to see once every couple of years felt so bad after the massive meltdown drove me back the following day.

Im suffering discrimination and a lot of stuff from care workers family and others who refuse to even try to understand and I think Im bad and wrong and listen to your videos and it helps me realise I am not the problem. I try to get them to watch too and they refuse.

Miscommunication is my life, I've come to accept it whenever I open my mouth, or even look at someone. I'm certain that it ultimately led to my divorce, led to having very few friends. Catastrophise, 100%. Doom and Gloom was my go to when I was a kid, as mentioned to me repetitively.

I don't think that you can ever have a relationship with no misunderstandings. Whether you are neurotypical or autistic. But I do believe that you can have relationships with fairly few misunderstandings.

I don't feel like every conversation I have goes bad for me. I have worked a lot on social skills. I don't have the acting skills to mask much so I didn't fall into heavy masking. I think that there are social skills that don't include masking but it sounds like it is difficult to figure it out sometimes. What I am trying to say is that there are social skills that we can learn that can improve our interactions without using heavy masking.

    • @hgriff14
      @hgriff14 6 месяцев назад

i was able to mask (i dont know if only talking about basketball or golf is masking) but the october before covid i had some health problems so i couldn’t be around people and then after covid i was barely able to mask at all and now im getting an assessment for autism to go with my dyslexia and add. the weirdest part is my brother has all the “stereotypical” autistic traits and he just refuses to listen to me explain it. even with a mom with diagnosed ocd and an aunt that has a lot of autistic traits too. i think being able to mask is the reason im 27 and haven’t done anything but fail out of college so i would also want to know this but everything ive seen is: be confident and look people in the eye. stuff that i didnt even do when i masked because i physically couldn’t.

Catastrophizing is my middle name. I want to give one example because it’s important to me. After my diagnosis last year I really wanted to be part of the autistic community.
I started following a content creator (you) because I felt you gave me all the information I needed and liked the look/feel/style of your videos. So, after a few months I felt I wanted to comment on the content. To be part of a community there should be some interaction in my opinion. It was and still is challenging (does that sound weird?) What if people don’t get my jokes (sarcasm), offending anyone, sounding like an idiot. If I don’t get 👍 I know I messed up. I am petrified that I will alienate my new tribe. I’ve deleted so many comments.
So, that’s the first chapter of my book. 😊
Oh yes. Who needs to shower every day anyway. It’s not as if I socialise that ofen. I brush my teeth though. I’m not an animal! 😆

I'm the opposite when it comes to time even tho I'm autistic 😬 I wonder if that's a thing as well? I feel like my concept of time doesn't exist and I'm constantly late because I misjudged how long I need to do things or get somewhere 😅

Hello I was just listening to your podcast and was struck by what you said about your experience of talking to other autistic people, you said it was also difficult. This has not been my experience, I have always found it easier to talk to other autistic people because of the truthfulness and shared experiences. When we do disagree we tend to “agree to disagree” quite quickly - if we know neither is going to budge. There seems to be less incentive to manipulate or persuade, it’s like “here are the facts: do with them what you will”. And often this leads to a new consensus as more information comes to light. Such as, “oh I got that wrong or I didn’t know that”. Or we actually find we do agree but have come at this from different angles and have been confused by some misinformation which has now been cleared up.
The goal of conversations seems to be information sharing and idea creation so there is less conflict about status and power which infiltrate neurotypical conversation. I find autistic people are more empathic than neurotypicals who may fake sympathy for social capital but don’t tend to actually want to truly empathise with your situation or pay any cost for compassion. I think the problems arise when talking to other autistic people, because we have both been trained our whole lives to talk to and think like neurotypicals. So I’m not sure how much I need to still do that when I’m talking to an autistic person. Sometimes I expect them to behave like neurotypicals because that is the world I grew up in. So you can both be annoying each other without realising. I sometimes wonder is autistic
People are wary of me because I’m so trained like neurotypical so they wonder if I too am manipulative, but once it’s established that we are more similar and can drop the mask, communication is usually satisfying.

I’m so misunderstood all the time and the amount of times I apologise in a day is ridiculous. I always say as well if this makes sense or am I making sense after each thing I say and some people take offence by this reading into it a NT nuance of me saying they’re stupid or thick no I didn’t mean that or more importantly SAY that! Ugh honestly my life is so hard with my care team all NT misunderstanding me all the time. Life is painful and difficult and I struggle so hard no I mean exactly what I’ve said nothing more, nothing less.
