The local Meijer (basically WalMart but slightly less evil) had a playable 3DO kiosk on display in their electronics section until around 1996, and seeing footage of this game always reminds me of standing at the kiosk for 45 minutes playing the Road Rash demo while my parents were off buying groceries. Good times.
I remember the game seemed impossibly next-gen at the time compared to the home 16 bit versions I'd played, and I dreamed of somehow scraping up the money to buy a 3DO even though it was impossible on my $1 a week allowance. It was one of the first games I picked up when I bought a PSX a couple years later.

Yeah, the 3DO had an almost mythical quality to it in the mid-90s. I definitely bought the marketing hype and thought it was a powerhouse of a console, but upon seeing it in action in kiosks, I was never impressed. Then the PS1 released and that was all she wrote.

My brother and I had the 3Do Road Rash game back in 1996 when we were in our teens. I sure miss those gaming days.

I had a $1.50 per week allowance in the mid 90’s. Sorry to hear you were even poorer than me.

Classic. Growing up and realized how privileged I was to own the latest offerings from Nintendo and Sega, which, in hindsight, were the correct choices, I vividly remember the 3DO. I can picture the glossy two page magazine ad they took out hailing it as the next best thing since, I don’t know, the NASA space shuttle. It just always looked and felt so premium, so pristine and so unattainable. To be fair, I think it was priced north of $700. Back then! Which even without inflation is more than what we are paying for modern day consoles - sure, the hardware landscape has evolved drastically, companies have exploited their resources and are on the verge of tapping out on true advancements, outside of the iterative, and often refined evolutionary approach, not unlike cellular devices like the iPhone. I mean have you picked up an old BlackBerry or even first gen 3GS lately… well, having worked in telco for over a decade, I have, and to this day I question how I managed using such a small and meaningless device, who’s display was so inconsequential and feature set, so incredibly rudimentary. But, back to this. Reminds me also of the arcade days, as I recently took a reminiscent trip down memory lane revisiting the genesis of my allegiance to the Mortal Kombat franchise. Damn; I know there aren’t flying cars or robots running the world, but we are a lot closer than what meets the eye. Often it’s these cathartic moments that remind us how good (or bad) we had it. Tbh is game, though, gives me Outrunner vibes from the arcade. The driving/shooting mash up that would eat your quarter within seconds, painfully coercing you to deplete any and all loose change you had on your person. Or, get up, dust yourself off and return to the true pioneers in what I consider to be authentic arcade-ing. Pinball machines. And yes, they can run north of $20K even today. Something about hardware over software. Glad the companies have realized that you need to cut your losses on the console and eat up your margin, so you at least have a base big enough to justify a generation’s lifecycle more than a couple years. I would say we are at a pretty solid, steady state and what feels like the precipice of either remaining stagnant, or cleverly refining our offerings in a way that keeps everyone happy. Nintendo, for one, definitely pulled themselves out of what was one foot in the grave and returned to the core of their base, worrying less about splashy graphics and complicated AI, and more about nostalgic 2D gameplay and familiar characters that transcended the world of video gaming. That’s all I got. Back to my PS5. Or Switch. Knowing that I will likely own a PS6 and Switch 2 sometime in the next half decade. And, to be honest, I will never it any other way. Best Buy had a 3DO kiosk and my buddy and I would get baked off of Mexican brick weed and go play this game for hours in ‘94. I wanted this system so bad. The graphics were so real. At least they looked that way back then. 😂
