    7:58 - Wow, Faye Adams is still alive, which would make her 100/101. This is such great news. I sincerely hope that this beautiful lady and artist is very well and happy. That really made my day.

    I had a few friends jammed in my car, mainly Pacific Islander's, who would only listen to modern R&B. We were listening to some so called R&B, so I played a cd with R&B from the 50s. The look on their faces was fantastic, it was totally beyond their imagination. And I was laughing about the crap they loved.

    I wish life could roll back to the more simple times of the 50s. Back when things made more sense, people had class, style, respect, and people didn't get into trouble unless they asked for it. The music was the greatest, I really dig that sound daddy O, it's really swing.

Now I know what to say in polite company. 😀All of them are fantastic, some I'm familiar with but this Martha Davis I never heard of and she's phenomenal in every way. Sadly, though, when I excitedly go to google biographies and/or documentaries on these amazing black entertainers so I can learn more there's none and if there's anything is cursory stuff. Please offer where links whenever possible for people like me who's thirsty for more of this stuff. Played Ms. Davis' song twice because it's so good. I'm sure I'll watch the show again. Thanks for uploading, Keep them coming.

    If I am not mistaken, during Basie's Conversation, at 40:55, that is the great saxophonist Wardell Grey, stepping up to start his solo by quoting his own composition, "Twisted" (ruclips.net/video/WQgxFHR6VxE/видео.html), later made famous with the vocalese version by Lambert, Hendricks & Ross in the late 1950's (ruclips.net/video/HFiAZYnNRyQ/видео.html), and again by Joni Mitchell in the 1970's (ruclips.net/video/4Vmq-DHQRF4/видео.html). I didn't realize Wardell Grey had done a stint with Basie. Interesting that by 1955, in addition to his big band work, Basie was working with a small combo, basically playing the same jump blues style as he did with his big band in the 1930's, but often featuring beboppers. Swingin'! That's Buddy DeFranco on the licorice stick, too. Killer combo.
    Sarah Vaughn sounds amazing on her number too. Her phrasing and melodic invention are stunningly beautiful. What a monumental talent.
    Hampton's trumpet player in the 2nd chair from the left is a young Quincy Jones. Here is another clip from the same session that shows him more clearly: ruclips.net/video/kjE-lIx5xFw/видео.html. First hired by Hampton in 1953 at age 15, he was kicked off the bus by Hampton's wife, who insisted he finish high school. He rejoined the band after graduating, which would place him just about the period when this footage was taken in ~1955.
    So cool! Thank you for posting this!

      He does kind of look like an early ElDebarge. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some inspiration there. Jeffries identified as black and white throughout stages of his life. At this stage of his career, he identified heavily with the Black American community. He later stated that he was mixed-race and multi-ethnic [Irish, Southern Italian (Sicilian), North African, and East African (Ethiopian)]. He was raised by his Irish mother and black stepfather, taking his surname, in Detroit. The 1920 census listed him as mixed. He stated that his father, a Sicilian, passed away in World War I. His acting career began in western films marketed at black audiences. Likewise, his musical career began working with predominantly black bands.

    • @vlaekershner7305
      @vlaekershner7305 2 года назад +1

      From Herb Jeffries' obituary (he lived to be 100): "Mr. Jeffries’s racial and ethnic identity was itself something of a performance - and a moving target. His mother was white, his father more of a mystery. He told some people that his father was African-American, others that he was mixed race and still others that he was Ethiopian or Sicilian."
