The “range extended EV” part means that you can get a gas powered generator that will charge the batteries when needed. BMW had a similar option on the original i3 if I remember correctly
Range Extended EV is like a Plug In Hybrid except the electric range is hundreds of miles so in everyday driving you may never need to use the gas generator, only perhaps towing over long distances.

These cars look awesome and great to see the Scout name revived. Sadly, anything related to “off road” and utilitarian is priced like a luxury car even if nobody spending 70k+ will take it off road lol. Plus the EV aspect adds to cost.
GM patented the voltec range extending hybrid system with the original Chevrolet Volt and its a no brainer for a stop gap or in between measure for trucks in my opinion.
Gasoline generator* attached to the battery. The generator can recharge the battery but it is not at all connected to the wheels or drivetrain. You cannot drive the vehicle on gasoline at all. Just think of the generator as a portable charger that happens to use gasoline.

I work for Scoutman here in GA, so we keep close contact with several execs and have watched the progress and their insistence of keeping as much of this vehicle as possible USA made. Now you know.

They are making a PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) version. So you'll be able to run on gas or electricity, whichever is more convenient at any given time.
