    Matt, when i started training with the shillelagh, i learned about Irish factions and their use of the blackthorn stick. The actual length of the "shillelagh", was usually shorter and more similar to a club, than the length of a walking stick. When reasons arose for a confrontation between the Irish factions, a traditional challenge would take place, usually between the leader of each group or members. One of the two leaders would remove his coat or jacket, drag it on the ground, daring the other faction leader to try to step on it. If the challenge was accepted, and the coat was stepped on, then the fight (battle) would ensue between the factions. With the English taking control of Ireland, and attempting to prevent these faction fights, they prohibited the Irish from carrying these clubs. To disguise the shillelagh, it was actually made longer and used as a type of walking stick, but could still be used for combat. The actual "loading" of the root ball with lead was usually not the norm, but done by those who wanted greater impact, when performing the strike. Doug.

    Your ideas are practical. People that have never been in a fight don't understand what it is really like.
    Fancy spinning moves are nice but not likely to work. Practice spinning a cane or exercise for fun but it's no way to end a fight.
    The reality of fighting is brutal and you must respond fast and intensively. There is no time for fancy BS. None.

    Hi Matt, I had my thumb severed in a Knife fight I've been in two, I didn't see a weapon until he'd used it in both cases. With the thumb severing incident, I was at work years ago, at a Co meet and greet, I was an apprentice Engineer and was getting to know people and fetching orders from the Bar. A character at the Bar, keep ribbing me every time I got an order, looking for freebies, always in a kind of threatening way. Finally, he got up quickly and flew at me with what I thought was a punch, that I blocked, and threw him with a Judo throw over my shoulder, high style, it wasn't till I had his hand bent back in a wrist lock that I saw the blood. still to this day, I still don't know what he used on me. Anyway, he cut right through my major thumb joint all but a few tendons and skin at the back, luckily that allowed the first-ever thumb reattachment. Now, I assume if you're lurking around, in a suspicious way you have a knife and I act accordingly, only punks looking to scare flash knives, the dangerous guys conceal them. The second point, that was in the UK where I grew up, I returned to Canada at the end of my apprenticeship, sick of the violence. In both countries now, and I'm 100% disabled and use at a minimum a cane to move short distances, Stick style and Knob ended canes are now considered weapons and the cops will take them if you're in the city, plus if you ever had to use one thing's wouldn't go well for you, as it's an offensive weapon and any preparation to defend yourself is a provocation in the eyes of the Law, so the disabled guy becomes an instant criminal. Personally, I find the stick styles easier to manipulate, the handle gets in my way, but I'm still working on it. Thanks for all you teach us, Best Regards Ian

      Wow Ian. That is a crazy story! I am fed up too with all the violence and how we (law abiding citizens) are treated as criminals and the criminals have free reign. Anyway, thanks for your support! Stay safe and thanks for training with me!

      @@pasquinilli i liked a lot this tutorial cause a cane is a perfect weapon going to the back for the payday check. There s been a lot of assaults specially in those moments when people go draw their money ftom ATMs.I even thought to carry a baseball bat, but the walking cane is great!. Thanks for sharing this tutorial to the world.

    Very good tutorial, as usual, based on principles. I think the Shillelagh type cane, even without the added lead shot, is not allowed in certain places because it is considered a deadly weapon striking with the knob. Best choice, as you state, is the walking cane with the crook, and through your demos I was urged to already purchase 2 such form Cane Masters. Excellent investment for personal protection.

    Hi Matt, sorry i missed class, but had a doctor's appointment this morning. I just finished watching your class, and it was great, teaching the use of the different type of sticks. Last night i practiced with the Irish shillelagh on the heavy bag. That method of stick fighting that you teach, is well worth learning, by adding to a person(s) self defense skills. Have a great day. Doug.

    I don't know why I found it funny, but I about spit out my coffee when Matt was explaining that because of the crook, the cane is allowed in places you can't take a walking stick. (Maybe the very subtle sarcasm?) Unfortunate, because it feels like at my present state of mobility and conditioning, me carrying a cane would look out of place. But from the practical standpoint, that aspect gives the cane an advantage. If you are going to a sporting event and walking on sketchy streets from the parking area, you are going to be stopped at the venue entrance and your walking stick, .38 snub nose, and mace are going to be show stoppers. (Do they still have "bat night" at the baseball parks? LOL) Laws and rules don't always make sense. I've had that thought while watching people get on planes with walking aids ("They can CARRY THAT on, but someone I know had a small ratchet driver confiscated because it was an inch too long?"). Great work Matt. Doesn't look like the French pastries are catching up to you. Do you have a sequential series for cane defense? Trying to figure out how to get started at home, get proficient, stay proficient/continue to improve speed, power and making it second nature, and incorporate it into my workout regimen. Thanks.

    Buenas noches estimado Sr,
    Me gustansus videos son muy buenos , he tenido alguna practica con bastones de esgrima Khali , hace un tiempo con juego de garrotes estilo venezolano, y al ver sus videos me nace una duda, se que son para autodefensa pero parece que el atacante se deja pegar y solo recibe nuestros golpes no dices nada de que el tambien se defiende y que pasa si trata de agarrar el baston, lo bloqueo o nos lo quita.
    Apreciaria mucho una respuesta a estas posibles situaciones y como enfrentarlas.Gracias de anticipadas

    Matt, What diameter do you suggest for the "Lowes" home made walking stick? What kind of oil? I assume the shillelagh does not get the Good Housekeeping seal of approval at TSA and other public venues. Shoot, if you threw on a weird hat or beret and carried one of those but did not appear in need of mobility assistance, people would just think you were "quirky". This is a great video presentation on immediate response. As you noted, many mentally impaired people on the streets. Do you have any sessions on dealing with the less obvious threats? I was approached by a seemingly normal looking guy getting way into my personal space on a busy downtown sidewalk, staring and mean mugging while not saying a word. Feels like it might not go well in your (legal) favor if you maim this kind of person, yet it feels foolish to let them get the drop on you by first providing the confusing behavior. Again, great job with the video - breaking down the moves, repetition in showing them, and stressing the visualization. The humor is an added bonus ("Top of the morning to ya", SMACK)

    • @pasquinilli
      @pasquinilli  2 года назад +1

      Haha. Thanks! 1” diameter is best for most unless you have really big hands you could do 1.25”. I will make a new video on situational awareness and obvious threats for you. Thank you!

    Irish Shillelagh (36 inches I took a picture of mine and called it a "Black Thorn ROOT KNOB "WALKING CANE" to Twitter on TSA where you ask them questions,and they said nothing about it being a weapon or forbidden "walking sticks" (the big polls anything over 40 inches) all they said was place my CANE on x ray and if I needed it back tell the team member so you get your stick right back, but the point here that i am making is, if you say you need it for mobility issues like me (I'm 38) bad sciatica nerve pain and bad bock and balance issues they said they would accept it with metal washer in end and that little metal end cap I was shocked, I know if you say you don't use it mobility, but just want to carry it, they will not let it on plane cane or walking stick you must say its for health issues and mobility issues...them sharp crooks (not cane masters) I meant canes that have nearly very sharp point at bottom of crook they who sells them said you can take that cane anywhere since 1992 they been making them, cane masters is who I am going with, its more grey man option with dojo cane or my shilleagh which is mentioned as "black thorn knob stick walking cane" to any security, as long as stick/cane has right bottom on it and even mine with the thorns makes it less likely I would defend myself with it as I cannot grap thorns but it would be good as something, cane and walking sticks under 40 inches I say is good to bring on air planes just not bring no sword canes or them super sharp crook canes like them I mentioned or worse weapon hidden inside, u don't want that trouble. Just get a good cane and your good. They all call walking sticks canes these stores online and things but air port don't care for them sharp crooks, this other company swears you can carry this super sharp inward pointed crook, its opposite of cane masters. All I know is I got a bunch of canes and sticks and use whatever I can take legally and with less attention being attracted..
