    Worked like a charm. Didn’t eve have to go through the reprogramming step. Worked as soon as I swapped the battery. Had to modify the tabs on the Panasonic VL 2020 battery to get the fit just right. A little work with the dremel and no prob. First battery lasted 18 years. Hope this one does as well.

    Nice video! I used an X-Acto micro saw rather than a blade. Very neat, worked great, and no risk of personal injury. Opening the fob, I found that one of the tiny battery contact welds had broken. I bent the contact a little so that it touched the battery and the key began working again without replacing the battery. The 22-year-old batteries in both keys are still working fine! I bought my 2001 325i new. Your programming technique is good, but it'll work better if you hold the key right next to the ignition slot while pressing the buttons.

    Today I learned they made keys that are charged by the car when in the ignition. Pretty freaking cool really!

      Not when the battery doesn't last much longer and/or requires this much work to replace said battery when it inevitably goes bad. The case isnt even user friendly!! Unfortunate

      Yeah it’s pretty cool until the battery no longer work and they want to charge you $328 for one key

    My key stopped open and lock the car a year ago, but there still was just enough power to use the emergency opening of the trunk (when the lock cylinder in the driver's door gave up). Even with a bad battery, it still charges a little bit every time you use it and that power can be enough for that emergency feature (for some reason THAT works, bot not the regular lock - why I don't know - perhaps a security feature, so you'll change the battery or key before it's totally gone).
    Another thing I noticed, is that when the battery is almost completely dead - the RFID will not get enough power to activate the gear selector for automatic transmission (the display will not show P, D or R) and kick-down, top gear and reverse lights will not work. Sometimes the car won't even start att all. But after letting the key sit in the lock with ignition turned on a while, it usually wakes up. With a new battery - everything works perfectly again.
    I used a CR2025 a while, waiting for the online orders of proper VL2020 batteries. Make sure to buy VL2020 with 90 degree connectors, so it will fit on the circuit board. Flexible (but strong) glue is easier to use than those super glues, I found out.

    I found that you need to switch it on and off in the ignition 3 times in a row before you push the buttons the way you did. It didn’t work when I did it just once but another video showed a guy doing it three times and it worked immediately.
    Otherwise thanks very much.
    Good luck!

      I just replaced the car battery in my e46 convertible and this looks easy in comparison. It's great that it was in the trunk but it's like they went out of there way to make it difficult to remove and then resecure it. At one point I thought I had everything in and secure but I then realized I had it in backwards. And yes I have a college degree.😳

      @@davidoconnell3834 the up side of a battery in the boot (trunk :) ) is that it does not suffer from the engine bay heat which shortens the lifespan. It is more difficult to get it out though.

    The modern method of repair is to desolder the charging circuit, add a coin cell slot, then put in a cheaper non-rechargeable cell

    Well, I am afraid to tell you that the super glue repair may not last too long. Instead there is a more durable solution, a click housing key. The new housing is then just clicked together and holds up quite well and much better then super glue. Design is the same as BMW stock and the little sticker on the lock button is cheaply available as a spare at BMW.

      BMW know their vehicles will outlast the battery in the key, which is good for 10-15 years so they want you to go to their dealerships and buy another key. But luckily ebay supply you with all you need to fix the key and BMW get no more money.

    • @imnota
      @imnota 3 года назад

      Well, the thing is that they did it that way because the battery shouldn't ever need to be replaced if the key had been used regularly. Only reason they go bad is people leave keys unused for too long and the battery doesn't like that. But keys that are used regularly never have that problem. I, and many other people are still driving around with keys that still have the original battery.
