    May I suggest using small vise grips or similar locking pliers to hold the key to lower the risk of someone possibly slicing a finger with the razor knife when cutting open the plastic housing.
    Clamp vise grips to metal key shaft close to plastic housing.
    And yes if you are mechanically inclined and have proper tools a soldering iron or gun is more professional as well for removing spot solders and reattaching.
    Also check battery/key function with vehicle before regluing housing, in case it needs a re-do.
    Other than these suggestions thanks very much for the vid.

  • @baliboy
    @baliboy 3 года назад +3

    Awesome close ups dude, good work.
    Bending the pin.... not a good idea. You were so close and on the right track... just apply more heat to the solder joint and the pressure you started to apply.
    Also, using silicone to put it back together works well. If you ever need to do it again.... easy to slice through.
    Good work for soldering for the first time. Impressive.
    One tip I would give your viewers is to remove the case before ordering the Panasonic VL2020 battery. The reason is sometimes you just need to flow the joints and the battery will charge again. For example I just opened mine, and I could see what professionals call a 'dry joint' on the solder point. This means the battery can't charge. I have flowed the dry joints by just heating the solder points, and now I need to use the key in the car for half an hour to see if will charge now.
    Thanks for the video... nice work.

    I had this issue and read somewhere that the key can be recharged just by simply driving around with it in the ignition. My key was my spare that the battery had died in, so it made sense and it worked. If it’s the key you normally use, it doesn’t make much sense. However, I would try it before cutting the key open. If that doesn’t work then this video is your next option other than paying sky high for a new one.

    • @OmarsGarage
      @OmarsGarage  3 года назад +1

      Yeah, this was a 17 year old key that was used daily. The battery was no longer holding a charge. The spare key would hold a charge, but it was so weak you had to be right next to the car for it to work. I replaced both batteries for $10 and 30 minutes of my time.

      @OmarsGarage  2 года назад +1

      The cars are suppose to charge the battery when I’m the ignition but after almost 20 years the rechargeable batteries just can’t hold a good charge. First you will notice that you have to be real close to the car for it to unlock the car. Then eventually it just stops working.
