    A friend of mine gave me an old bell and Howell 2 track tape recorder from the early 1960s. I was hoping to take the amplifier out and turn it into a low wattage guitar amp. Upon plugging it in the transformer sizzle then burned. I ended up checking the 12 a X7 slot, and found a Telefunken made in west Germany 12 X7. I had already put a Tungsol new old stock US-made 12 X7 in the V1 position of my Mesa boogie Fillmore 50 and decided to swap them. I really didn’t think it was going to make that big a difference. I could not have been more wrong, I really love the tight, bright, well-rounded, and very musical tone of the Telefunken tube. Needless to say, it’s not going anywhere. It makes my PRS SE sound like a vintage telecaster. And I now understand why these tubes are so highly sought after on eBay!

    I purchased 2 Telefunken
    ECC83s & will use them with 2 premium grade Mullards. Both sets are matched.
    I think these tubes will be quite pleasing to my ears.
    For my amplifier output stage, I am going with
    4 Mullard EL34s.

    Your ribbed-plate Telefunken ECC83 will allow more detail/articulation than the smooth-plate Telefunken ECC83 due to greater extension into treble of the ribbed-plate version. People rave about the smooth-plate Telefunken ECC83, yet I find I prefer the ribbed-plate version's greater detail. What the smooth-plate version offers is a unique increase in upper-midrange frequencies, while rounding off the treble. For home audio/HiFi that will bring out female vocals in a way that no other 12AX7 will. However, that smooth-plate Telefunken is not what I'd deem a "tonally balanced" 12AX7. I'm sure you'll want to try the smooth-plate version, but I hope you're not too disappointed when trying it in your guitar amp.
    Cheers!

    They ( RFT ) used the plates of an ECC81 tube.............even the ECC82 was build with the same plates.
    Mostly underrated tubes and often better than many current production ( and longer life span ), they were used and by Conrad Johnson and Luxman amplifiers ...and some others ..............with the amplier brand on the tubes in those expensive people do not know these are RFT and don't doubt the quality of the tubes used by the manufacturer of their beloved amplifiers.............funny how audiophiles have their strong, strange and persistant beliefs ...........For the fun , I had soviet 6DJ8 for peanuts to sell but the customer wanted the original tubes in his gear , labeled GOLD AERO ..............they were the same tube but at 20 times the price and rebranded as 6922 (witch they are NOT ! ) .................he refused the genuine tubes and bought the Gold Aero's..................

    Would you mix a telefunken 12ax7 tube with other telefunken tubes in a stereo amplifier?

    • @ecc8344
      @ecc8344  5 месяцев назад

      This is guitar-tube channel ..so not sure how would that work in stereo amplifier for audiophiles. For what Ive read, people praise Telefunkens aswell in audiophile world as guitar amp world.

    what can I expect from ecc83 RFT in a Marshall jcm800? I'd like to get high gain and a dark sound...the low-mid bump you talked about is very welcomed for me.

    • @ecc8344
      @ecc8344  Год назад +1

      Yes, RFT's always work well in Marshalls, at least what I've read and researched. So you cant go wrong with it, matter of fact any vintage tube will work great in JCM800 :)

      Tungsram will also be a great option, they are not too expensive usually..low mids and dynamic mid range with nice top chime that is nice and tamed :) enjoy your RFTs in your Marshall, have a blast, let me know how they sound :)

      @@ecc8344 yes excuse me. i edit.
      i do not know for guitar, but for hifi the valvo hamburg 17mm is preferred and also most expensive of basic ECC83. i have many german ECC83, including valvo hamburg, but not the 17mm. thats the one i dont have. expensive tube. much more expensive from legit, reputable dealer.

      Where to buy em? You can find em everywhere, on ebay being probably the most expensive.. Look around your local second hand market, theres many times people selling big stashes of tubes and there is always some gold for bargain in there :)
