Assassin's Creed Mirage Is EXACTLY What I Feared... | Review

  • Going back to the roots of Assassin's Creed was a fantastic idea after much of the fanbase was fatigued due to the bloated content found in Odyssey or Valhalla. However, Ubisoft may have gone too close to the roots of the original Assassin's Creed instead of evolving upon it. The ideas are sound, great even, but it all falls apart when these pieces come together.

See one thing that they did away with in assassins creed that I’ve always viscerally felt the absence of is the puzzles and mysterious subject 16 files that you had to “decode” and find through out the world. I remember back with the failed Thief reboot, that during development there was a huge backlash from fans that there was going to be a leveling system and so they ended up removing it because "Garrett is already a master thief", fast-forward to today, every single triple A game has a skill point system, even Doom, it's just a part of the checklist for what to add to a modern big budget game.

    • @frenchfriedbagel7035

    • @mattallred
      @mattallred 11 месяцев назад +9

Have you ever played a game that starts you off with everything unlocked? I've been playing Castlevania: SOTN lately and it starts you briefly with everything before taking it away. Games have always had progression and sequels have often poked fun at this or theorized why the character is reset. Whether its levelled skills or items/weapons which grant you new abilities, this isn't really anything new. I'm 99% certain that developers understand through millions of hours of playtesting that players get overwhelmed if given all abilities immediately. This is why most games always start you off by instructing you how to move or look around.
You can argue about how it should be paced, but NG+ ultimately seeks to solve this by letting you replay the full game with everything. Do you want lots of skills and abilities? Then the trade off is unlocking it over time and hopefully getting NG+. Triple A games are developed for audiences of millions, it's in their interest to make their product accessible. Granting abilities without explaining them isn't accessible. So we get tutorials and unlockable progression.
The system itself isn't the problem, it's the implementation. If it affords you gameplay options, totally unique mechanics with trade-offs, then it's fun. If it's simple incremental stat boosts, yeah, that sucks... but if it is giving you new gameplay abilities and allowing you to engage with the game world in a better way, then what's the problem? Would you really be happy to start the game as an unstoppable force? Even in the original DOOM you start with just a pistol.
It's a flimsy criticism. It's basic game design and it's up to the devs to make it work... to make it make sense... to make it fun.

I feel like there is an underline problem in gaming industry atm.
Some people who are very active on social media and some very active social influencers comes out as face of consumer. Just because they are very active on social media. Such people usually have strong opnions and want shorter games, action oriented, fast paced because they play a lot of games and newd time for social media.
Developers are taking such people feedback which I believe is ruining some franchises.
Just for example Valhalla is unanimously criticized on social media yet the game is best selling ubisoft game ever.
Developer need to understand social media users arent the majority of consumers. Games are played by people of all ages genders in 200 countries. Social media is usually a face of young, busy, western people.
When I saw mirage the first time I knew it will be critically praised but wont sell that well.
This is also why I feel MrMattyplays is a better face of consumer in the industry.
Most of youtubers have to review 10 games a month. There is no way they can be voice of consumers. Most will always say they like shorter games. Because they have to review 10 games or have to make videos have to do things etc etc.
That is also why starfield is rated lower than mirage.
General consumer like me only buy 20 30 games a generation of 7 years that is 84 months 🤔

Exactly. The Assassin's Creed subreddits have a lesser form of the problem with the old Fallout boards: a small, loud, group with nothing better to do has taken over the narrative and shouts down the majority and they hate the new games so Ubisoft thinks that's what the fandom is actually like.

I really enjoyed the older AC games mostly due to their simplicity so I'm glad it's like that again. However, I can see how it can be boring and tedious (Petruccio's feathers anyone?). It amazes me that Ubisoft would take such a huge overcorrection on this instead of going back to what made the games great in Ezio's timeline/AC3/AC4.

I worked a little bit in the game design field a while back, so this is just my thoughts. I think technology is making it easier for artists to create high quality assets quickly. Maybe AI will be the thing that helps the design and coding side be easier. I feel like it's difficult to innovate new gameplay, implement it bug free, test it, and make it fun within the deadlines they set. Feels like gameplay is more of a "let's hope this works and make changes for the next game or go in a totally new direction" which I guess works if your business goal is to pump out a ton of titles COD style.

Rogue came out alongside unity between 4 and unity as a middle ground for those unable to make the console generation leap. So new Gen got unity. Past Gen got rogue. Technically rogue would be considered one to be played first. Also it's gameplay is basically 4 but was the ice. It's better to keep the momentum going by playing 4 then rogue then unity.

So we'll stick with the modern slogs with all its monetization. If they truly wanted to give fans what they asked for, they would have went with something that's closer to AC2 rather then the OG AC.

One big thing for me was the parkour and its better but not enough. To fix it they gotta reintroduce the descend and uscend mechanics. I have every iteration of AC, from the first to Valhalla, and will obtain this one eventually. But not on day 1. One thing I think people forget about the AC franchise is that it had stagnated dramatically. That was the whole reason for the reboot of the series with Origins. Which, by the way, is my second or third fav from the franchise behind 2 and even with Brotherhood. To simply "go back to the roots" will likely be to repeat that stagnation. Time will tell, I guess. In any case, good vid

There’s no greater purpose for that shiny thing it’s just gone forever now.
